I can't recall Cyril's under 18s year all that well. I do remember I think in one of the under 18s championships games he kicked 7 goals playing as a midfielder/ half forward. I think that game really skyrocketed his credentials in a big way.

If true and so don't believe it is not then we will be fabulously entertained Ruth X factor football and feats and  skill of another level.

A half decade of Jackson and Pickett will have these 2 just as loved as Gawny and Clarry/Jonesy/JackV.

Oh and we may even have Harley to come on top of that

at 67kg he won't be doing much bone crunching for a few years at AFL level. We gave up a bit to get pick 8 which is potential A grade territory, not sure I'd be giving that up and moving into the teens for a couple of tier 2/3's. Especially taking into account the possibility of Jackson at 3.

I say go for it.

The kid has the potential to be a match winner.  Loves to tackle, gets to the right spots and loves a goal.  I don't give a stuff if we take him at 10 as opposed to 28.  If we believe he can be a big part of our forward line for the next decade then who cares where we select him.  

Get him, develop him and watch him smash blokes and kick goals every weekend.

On the basis of the clips I’ve seen, Pickett seems to play like a footballer. He has goal nous: times his runs well, knows where to run, executes cleanly, doesn’t fumble, has a good leap and attack on the ball.

Too often in the past we’ve picked the athlete over the footballer, and the one thing I’ve observed from that is that it’s bloody hard to turn a great athlete into a decent footballer if they’re not already that good at football.

I have no idea who the club will pick with 10 - but, if they pick Pickett, I’ll be excited because clearly he’s the one the club has targeted and it means they recognise his upside, which could be fantastic as it is in an important area where we presently have a gaping hole.

But who determines that they’re “tier 2/3s”?

Small forwards are that much harder to find, and most are a gamble which is why they aren’t often taken so early.

Everything I’ve seen from Pickett indicates that he has “it” - the only thing holding him back would be work ethic/attitude or physical conditioning/makeup, and he doesn’t appear to have these issues.

Think back to one of our recent hopes in Dion Johnstone - he didn’t show half as much as Pickett has. 

I’m happy to take him at 10 because I have confidence that our recruiting Dept will have done their homework & eliminated the possibility of any discernible red flags at this stage that would prevent us from selecting him.

God knows we’ve been trying to find a silky small forward with serious x-factor and aggression for long enough.

Draft experts. You'd have to think/agree that the top 2-3 (Rowell, Anderson, Young) are all tier ones, then you have a group of guys from 4-11ish who are the next group then comes the lucky dip.

I love what Pickett brings to the table don't get me wrong, but as an investor you don't buy a house at the most expensive price because you like it. He's 67kgs, think of how easily Spargo gets pushed off the ball and players of similar size.

With Jackson at 3, which I think is a punt, taking Pickett at 10 is flirting the edge a little. As I've said before, none of us are experts, but from afar it just doesn't feel right, it's the vibe of it I suppose!

If I were to put up or shut up, I'd take Young at 3 and was thinking Kemp/Ash/Stephens at 8, unsure now at 10 whether that mid bunch will surprise and where they'll go, dropping two spots in this draft could prove costly. History shows that some of the best small forwards of the modern era dont average many goals a game and everyone is trained to apply pressure these days, try and turn one of our resting mids into that role, Oliver seems to be the most natural who could snag a couple a game.

It's a real shame Garlett deteriorated later in his career also.

Maybe, Ryan I think averaged 3 goals a game in the WAFL beforehand and went mid/high 20's in the draft? He also just averages 1.3g per game, I'd take his premiership though and that mark that won it for them.

Looks to have that freakish indigenous agility.  Betts, Rioli, McDonald-Tippingwuti.

Some of those handpasses and that tap on..there is enough there to say that he is a pretty special talent.

I've never seen him live, but I don't get the where the hype around this kid has come from. A month ago, Weightman and Henry seemed to be regarded by those in the know as by far the most likely small forward prospects in the draft, with Pickett a speculative mid-draft prospect. Despite none of them (as far as I know) playing any footy in the meantime, Pickett seems to have come from nowhere to be firmly in the pick 10 discussion.

They didn't though - if anything, Cyril slid in his draft, and Daniel was widely touted as a top prospect all year. Both regularly dominated games and kicked bags at TAC cup level, and tested well at the combine. Statistically, Pickett hasn't come close to achieving what either of them did at junior level. His highlights look great - but at the national champs he simply couldn't find the footy. Aside from kicking a solitary bag of 6 in the SANFL reserves, what's he actually achieved?

It would be a brave call to draft him at 10, considering that we'd be probably be passing up at least one of Kemp or Young.

I'll leave it up to our recruiters. If we take him, I'll trust the gamble is worth it. If he makes the grade, players with his traits are the reason we watch footy.

Not exactly. Cyril was a top prospect all year and slid come draft time but Daniel’s name only came to attention very late (like Pickett). Two different draft stories.

It happens every year, and i have been as guilty as anyone.

A potential draftee can go without a single mention on this forum for the run up to the draft. That, or only fleeting mentions. The moment they come into serious contention to be drafted by us (via rumor usually) they suddenly become much better players, or are described as having enormous "Potential" or "ceiling".

Every clubs supporters do it and we at DL are no different. I reckon its probably so we dont feel let down when the name is called out higher than originally expected.
