We will have to wait and see??

No way ... here at Demonland we always rush into premature judgement.  Can't wait and see.

How good is he at injury prevention and management - who knows?

But Port were fit when he was in charge. They believed it, they played like it and they ran over teams late in games. It was great footy to watch.

I'd be willing to risk some injuries to see our players really believe in themselves.

We seem so reluctant to kick the ball and run to space. Our quick ball movement game plan will never amount to anything if we're afraid to stretch the size of the ground with run.

Question:  does the "fitness guru" make immediate decisions about injury management?  Surely that is the role of the club doctors and perhaps the physiotherapists?

The "fitness guru" is to get them all into, and keep them in,  the best shape for the role each player has.  Some will require more endurance work, others emphasis on agility and / or burst.

There was talk that our previous club doctors quit because Misson outranked them on player management.

Injury prevention would be the first priority, but a fitness guru also has to make a call about the right fitness program and when a player is right to play. A doctor or physio would manage the initial stages of injury but I'm 99% sure it then it comes down to the guru to work out the right amount of training.

Some of these guys are physiotherapists as well as exercise physiologists. And certainly it's a matter of team work between the doctor, physio and fitness guy to create the best plan.

A pipedream. Have it on a reliable source that he is paid over a million bucks at Arsenal. Why would he come back here????

Because Arsenal sacked him so he is out of a job.

On  a side DB joined Arsenal in July 2017;

Wilkshere missed 1 game (Community Cup) for Arsenal that season injury from a hairline fracture that occurred the season before when he was on loan at Bournemoth. The 17/18 Season was actually pretty good for him injury wise. 38 appearances across all the competitions (Missed some games for non selection/on the bench etc).

Following year he moved to West Ham and missed 30 games combined due to injury.

Maybe DB does have the midas touch!

anyway he's highly regarded, if we're building talent on the pitch it needs to be protected. for whatever reason, the medical department may or may not have shot themselves in the foot a few times in recent times. Need club-wide review and subsequent improvements (if warranted) on and off pitch to continue quest for success.

Cheers mate, didn’t realise he was only there since 2017. Arsenal have been ok on the injury front last year so hopefully good signs

And maybe he wants to come home to Australia

So did Port actually achieve anything during his time and just been sacked. I know he has a good reputation and probably justified but fitness guys don't give me any confidence either way that they are the difference in a premiership.

Having a fit list is pretty much key to winning premierships. Statistically the less players in your list you use during the season the better you place.

He was on over 500k a season when he was at Port and could demand the same from us. If he’s been let go from Arsenal and wants to return home, it’s not a bad wicket.

Well Arsenal is my second most hated club after Essendon so not a good start but he has a good rep apparently

although, Arsenal have been expert at losing this decade and have been hit pretty hard by injuries at times, ask re-occurring injured players: Aaron Ramsey, Wellbeck Wilkshere, etc.

Seriously?

Wilshere for one was injured his entire career and out on loan then left permanently during Burgess’ time at Arsenal.

I think you should also understand what caused the injuries to Wellback, Ramsey & others before making such an ill-informed comment. Just embarrassing.

Arsenal director of high performance Darren Burgess is set to leave the Emirates after two years with the club.

It is understood Burgess, 45, was sacked days after the Gunners' 4-1 Europa League final defeat by Chelsea.

I understand there would have been internal politics at play, with Shad Forsyth taking over his position.

This would be a highly valuable appointment if we could get him.  Cannot believe the negativity on this one.

EPL is no Mickey Mouse league.  He has proven AFL experience, and under his watch Port dominated with their ability to outrun the opposition.  Correct me if I’m wrong but I believe it was th year they made the prelim.  Pretty sure before Port he also had a stint at Liverpool.

I vaguely also remember an Adelaide advertiser article where he was running a program where other clubs/sports were sending their people to learn from him.

Get it done!

Good to  see  rational  fact based  discussion rather than the usual  negative  diatribe

Gosh, 500k. Good career choice, stay fit + get rich.

Slightly OT, but I was put off by the ‘pace setters’ when the players were running in pre-season. In that it surely falsely enhahnced their times. Faux data set perhaps didn’t help.

The fitness thing is less of a problem than poor trading and recruiting or bad game day coaching. When are these going to be addressed?

No matter what, we need a new fitness boss.

Misson is not being sacked he's moving O/S.

It's not about it being a problem it's about finding the right replacement for him.

Arsenal supporter hey?

no i reckon he got the sack after 2 years for doing a great job. ha

I'm so blessed to know that you don't think our injury list is a fitness issue. Chasing big names for the sake of appearances is why the club has gone backwards since all the AFL appointments have left. It took no time to get back to pre-Roos levels of management. We need to find people who are good at what they do. I have no confidence that our Board makes good staffing decisions at any level of the club.

The bloke is a gun and has a massive emphasis on maximising players’ running ability and aerobic capacity. Along with Hinkley, Richardson and Koch, played a major role in transforming Port from basket case to finals’ contender in one pre-season. No doubt he will be highly sought after by other clubs/codes if he’s coming back to Aus.

It's why I wouldn't be disappointed to see the Saints cut Richardson free and us pick him up....

Get the basics right.  Like Jesus H Christ.did when he fed and healed people.  He didn't life-coach them or set up a wellness retreat.  He didn't ask if they wanted Chia or gluten-free wine.

FWIW... that's literally exactly what he did (and many would say, continues to do 2000 years after his death)

I just know EPL, which you obviously don’t.

Dunno anything about Misson's job, dunno anything about Burgess, dunno anything about what fitness people do, dunno anything about any fitness person compared with all the other clubs, cricket, soccer, gridiron, ice hockey, hockey, curling, League, Yawnion.

Dunno.

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.

Following a disastrous 0–5 start to the season, the Demons have now made it three wins in a row, cruising past a lacklustre West Coast side on their own turf. Skipper Max Gawn was once again at his dominant best, delivering another ruck masterclass to lead the way.
