I wonder if his omission from the prelim last year has rocked his confidence. He was good player last year. He isn't this year.

Maybe if Goodwin actually played him in his natural position as a high half forward/wing we wouldnt be having this debate.

Fritsch is so badly put of his depth down back due to his poor one on one work and lack of awarness. I counted at least 4 of his turn overs which resulted in direct goals to West Coast.ย

Watch his game last year against St Kilda where he played as the floating half forward role and played it extremely well.

Can I start a petition to the mods that this expression and its variations be added to the [censored] list?

I wonder, if we went back through a few years of posts from absolutely everyone, indiscriminately, on occasions where they had included this expression, would we find that the whole damn lot of them could be deleted without removing a single helpful or interesting contribution.

You could even use it as a kind of modernised 'reducto ad hitlerum' for determining when an in-thread argument his digressed enough to be worthless to everyone except the pepole in the argument.

Whatever the particular observation, this expression demeans us all.

We have too many playing out of position IMO, some through necessity, some not too sure why..

absolutely agree - he is being played out of position, as is Gus, as is Jones for the large part. I can understand the need to cover injuries but this is just causing more problems. Needs a rethink.

No change if possible.

But I'd expect to see Lewis come in if fit. Maybe for ANB given he seems to be the 22nd player this year

Given Friday was Gawns best game of the year and if Mumford is rubbed our he will get a full game at a NEAFL ruckman this week I don't see why we'd stress about bringing Pruess in for Smith. Of course if concussion forces him out there's not much we can do about it. But idk if it's just me but Smith doesn't seem to be getting the credit he deserves for his job on McGovern. There's no coincidence half McGovern's touches came in the last qtr when Smith was concussed.ย

The argument for Preuss in is that GWS don't quite have a handle on the really big forward targets, and Preuss in would allow he and Gawn to rotate between beating up a second-string ruckman (using two massive bodies as bludgeons) and forcing one or more oft he GWS defenders to be that extra bit accountable instead of playing their favourite zoning off and rebounding game.

Also, I'm not personally sold on Smith, just yet, so it seems a simple positional swap.

16 hours ago, Deehumanizing said:

What part of the game gave you the idea that Gawn needs help? Experience only is important if he gets his hands on the ball and can lay a tackle, something Lewis has not done a good job of this year. He was very important last year but he will not have to be embarrassed out there too much this year to hang up his boots. You seem keen to win a fight rather than a footy game?

Maxy tires as the game goes on which is understandable.ย

Having Preussย in the side will help a lot with this so to will his aggression.ย

GWS is one of the quicker sides going. One of their weaknesses this year has been ruck and mobility, that is why Mumford was brought out of retirement. Without Mummy, we do not need two rucks. If Preuss could do a better impression of a gold-plated forwardย then it would work. The danger is that you will be sacrificing speed and versatility to play Preuss. There are other teams that this may not be as much of a liabilityย and might work like the Crows use Jenkins.ย

I still don't think we need two rucks with Mumford. He will struggle to keep up with Max. Everybody knows he is a thug but he can't afford to get suspended or they would not have got him back. The Murphy incident was not a ruck injury anyway. We will need as much run as we can get in the team for GWS, it won't be worth sacrificing that to put Preuss in.ย

I think,ย  he is one of the younger players who got ahead of himself last Off-season.

Practice what you preach and stop talking drivel. Mummy will struggle to keep up with Max. You have proved you don't read the game well. Ha Ha, Preuss and Lewis as ins? What a joke,ย  what is the matter is the team not slow enough for you?ย

Shane Mumford is not interested in keeping up with anyone. He is not even interested in going for the ball, as shown by his hit on Murphy. This is a direct quote from Mumford after he was asked about his big hit on Mitch Duncan, the Geelong player, when he was a Swan.

"I got Kieren Jack with a ripper years ago when I was playing with Geelong, back in the days when you could run through people and not worry about getting suspended. He didn't see me coming and I left him on the ground coughing and wheezing, and that was probably a better one."

So, he has a rating system for his assaults on the football field? Only as recently as August 2017 he received a one match ban for a high hit on Max Gawn. He doesn't care if he "struggles" to keep up with Max. He just enjoys running through people and never mind about "back in the days". He is still doing it and getting away with it. It is a disgrace he was not suspended for his hit on Murphy. He had no intention of going for the ball. He only had eyes for the player and what damage he could do. That is the way he thinks.ย

We don't need this b@$tard to take out Max and we are left without a ruckman. That is why Preuss is needed to back him up.

Am I talking drivel? The drivel seems to be coming from one direction. Your posts need to be more sociable and less derogatory.

The most risk averse player in our team. The stalling is momentum killing especially as he is used on the wing which is a link positionย

Exactly!ย  You need players in this possi who can quickly assess and roll inside for the quick kick inside 50 and with a reasonably accurate kick to advantage.

Stretch is a 'teaser' player who holds up play too long to assess and by that stage most options down field have been covered by the opp.ย  He also tends to dish off too short too often to lateral targets who are in a no better position forward, again results in a delay getting the ball inside 50.ย  Better to play him off the bench switching with Tracc for hisย breather and when a slow play is needed (well in front or looking to ice a quarter or slow the opp on a roll).

Salem and Petracca are a must this week on both wings.ย  Both love to play on.ย  Salem nice on the short medium kicks to a more shallow lead and Tracc to go longer toย the likes of big Pruess/Maxy and hopefully Jeffy out the back on some fast sling shot breaks!

This also removes Tracc from worrying about shots closer to goal and he just might be able to snag one or two from around the paint where he has no choice but toย kick through it from a set shot or no time to think about it on the run.

He got tired after a player used his boots on Maxโ€™s head to take a mark. Not that different from the Toby Greene marking style.

Yes,ย you are talking drivel. The way to beat Mumford is on the scoreboard and make him have to work out of his comfort zone. If you know what he is going to do, you are ready and are able to see it coming and dish it out. Have you ever played the game? If we are not able to match GWS in the run and spread, two rucks will not help.

Why did we bother getting Preuss if we are not going to play him.ย

Him and maxyย ย could be an awesome and dangerous combo if given game time together.ย

It's possible weย got him not to play in the same team as Max but:

  1. As insurance for when Max is injured or needs a rest.
  2. To replace Max when he retires. [For what it's worth, I think this is the main reason]
  3. To give Max someone decent to train with. It must be hard for Max to get better at his ruckwork and contested marking when training with smaller players or a retired ruckman with a padded bag.
  4. To take some heat out of Max's manager's pay expectations for his client. A threat to "walk" isn't as intimidating when there's a ready-made, albeit not as polished, replacement.

Agree - it was very Toby Greene and I thought the AFL were trying to stamp that out.

Bailey Fritsch is shockingly out of form and if we didn't have such a big injury list he would be dropped, but again, he is played out of position, like Brayshaw is at the moment. Bailey should be High HF / Wing.ย

Anyway this weeks changesย  should be minimal.. expecting Tim Smith out for Pruess, but if Smith is fit i would keep him in, its pretty amazing the bad run he has had. ANB might be crook from concussion, if so Corey Wagner in for him.ย

ย

Thats it, cannot, i repeat, cannot bring Jordan Lewis back in. this will test Goodwins resolve.. we dont need him in the side at all. not for any purpose, especially against a side as fleet footed as the Giants.

Thank you for your insight and your insult. You know I haven'tย played the game because I have chosen to identify myself as a female , unlike your profile. I have been a member of Melbourne for over 40 years, following my team, and of course females were not allowed to play football when I was young. This may come as a surprise to people living in today's times. My whole point of my post was highlighting Mumford's total disinterest in playing the game and beating anyone on the scoreboard. He doesn't care about winning a game for his team. He is only interested in running through someone, anyone, to hurt them. He said so himself.

Many posters on this forum have called for Preuss to be in the side and yet you pick on only certain ones to target to call them clowns and tell them they are talking drivel. Grow up. I am blocking you. So say your worst. You will be ignored by me. And spell Preuss correctly in future.

We could be leaving Mumford on the ground next game as a wasted jumper for his team. We will beat him, tire himย and run around him thus keeping him out of the game. We already know that he will have Gawn as a target, to injure, and this is the reason why Preuss needs to be used as a forward and relief ruckman during the game. We should also knock him rotten at any opportunity outside of direct plays. That bag of lard could be in for his last game.ย

Core issues in the Gawn-Preuss combo ... and it may well be an awesome duo, both carrying out a couple of roles other than just ruckwork.

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

The final score in Saturday's game against Hawthorn was almost identical to that from their last contest three months ago. Melbourne suffered comprehensive defeats in both games, but the similarities ended there. When they met in Round 9, the Demons were resurgent, seeking to redeem themselves after a lacklustre start to the season. They approached the game with vigour and dynamism, and were highly competitive for the first three quarters, during which they were at least on par with the Hawks. In the final term, they lapsed into error and were ultimately overrun, but the final result did not accurately reflect their effort and commitment throughout the match.
