I think the midfield often looks better balanced without Viney, not as many drawn to the footy and we seem to have more run. Was similar last year when we played really well before the finals started. Nothing against Jack I am a big fan of his but I do wonder how many inside mids we can play at once?

So wrapt with that win. Should’ve gone to the game in hindsight...

Can anyone please explain that second 50m against Harmes? I saw no player run past the Hawks player at all. They didn’t show a replay either.

I just rewatched that part. It was there but only just. Was bloody borderline.

Gave away 2 goals but did a great job on O'Meara, by all reports

Agree on the first one but will have to check the replay on the other. It looked to me that he needed a teleportation device to get out of the protection zone.

Our ball use is deplorable, but at least we ran with a bit more dare and dash today. We looked out on our feet at the start of the last quarter but credit for fighting it out. Our fitness is clearly below par and we are carrying way too many players who are unfit or need to retire (Lewis!!!), but there were glimpses today of the Melbourne of last year.

Lockheart worked his guts out and was a standout in the forwardline for me.

Agreed. Jeffry didn’t have big stats, but he created a load of opportunities and was directly responsible for 4 of our goals from his pressure. People can continue to hate him on, and he’s not perfect (see shot at goal instead of passing to TMac), but he’s comfortably the best small forward on our list and one of the Vestberg in the league when he’s in form. His crumbing and pressure today were exactly what we’ve been missing up forward all year.

Agree on all counts.

Much like pretty much everyone else, I hope he finds strength from this performance and gains even more confidence for next week. It doesn't matter (as he contributed to a number of goals) but his own goals will soon follow. He's great to watch when he's on song, and changes our dynamic I50 big time.

Frost's effort in the last 30 seconds was amazing. Won the ball and got it out to a Dees player. Trac's follow up was almost as good

Both 50m against Harmes were there

But so was the one to Tmac with blatant late kick ball away - unforgivable by that umpire!

Too bad this game wasn't played last night. A win is just not the same without Roaming Brian.

Match the quote to the player.

Player one: You bloody beauty! God I love this club!

Player two: Ken oath mate! I bleed for the red and blue!

Player three: yes, well, I bleed too. For the ... is it orange? No, I think it is red and --- brown? When you literally swim in money you lose track. All ords down this week. Bit of a bugger.

And the umpires, probably 4 clear holding balls not paid against Hawthorn and a couple of iffy ones. All when we had momentum too.

I listened to 3AW and they were critical of the missed free kicks. Time and again they thought a Melbourne free kick should be paid, but it wasn't. But they cannot be too critical because the AFL might get their noses out of joint.

To the old turds who told us not to boo Scully, go eat a bag. I’m a Melbourne supporter and I’ll bloody boo this piece of scum for as long as I like.

If you want to watch footy in silence stay home and knit.

He butters them up for Collingwood's next game so they can continue to be looked after as well.

There were a couple of clear 50s not paid to Melbourne in the last quarter. One to McDonald when a Hawks player booted the ball away. Another when a Hawks player returned the ball to the wrong Demon player after a Demon free. You'd care less, if it wasn't for the lame 50s paid against Harmes for maybe infringing the protected zone.

2019 Brownlow

Round 7, Melbourne v Hawthorn

Harmes, 3 votes

Lockhart, 2 votes (maybe contentious, as Gawn was solid, as were Hibbo and Salem, but I loved the kid's workrate and creativity)

Umpires, 1 vote.

Repulsing Hawthorn's desperate last forward foray, after the ball ricocheted off Marty Hore , was juggled twice by Chad Wingard, who was tackled superbly by Josh Wagner without drawing an infringement and extracted by Inspector Gadget extraordinaire Sam Frost whilst deep in enemy territory with only seconds to go would of made Houdini proud. Go Dees!

Umpiring should not make a difference to the outcome of a match...

But when we started to get a couple of iffy freekicks with 5 minutes to go, I thought, this wont end with "Free Kick Hawthorn" in front of goal with under a minute to go. the umpiring is just [censored] house.

    HIGHLIGHTS/LOWLIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Melbourne traveled across the continent to take on the Fremantle Dockers in sweltering conditions at Mandurah south of Perth in a game that delivered the club both its highlight and its lowlight in the first minute.  But first, let’s start by doing away with the usual cliches used in connection with the game. It was just a practice match and the result didn’t matter. Bad kicking is bad football. The game was played in severe heat, the swirly breeze played havoc with both teams resulting in

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
