Goody has sent the players away for a 4 day break before they regroup at the club on Monday.  After a few 6 day breaks and the 4 day break, it is probably a good time for them to freshen up.

Goody said they might watch a ‘bit of footy’ over that time.

Without kicking off a massive player bashing session, I am interested if that’s what a few of these guys need - a bit of time away and self reflection?  Perhaps now the bath water has been drained and we are staring at the dregs of what should have been, a little time away to ‘freshen up’ might be time for them to get their heads back in the game.  I would seriously be hoping the coaching staff take the time to take stock and reset.  If J Lewis was speaking from the club approved position (to change the gameplan a bit), then they have very little time to work out what they want to change, and get the systems ready to train next week.

Some of the players need to take a fairly solid look at their performances over this time and make some hard decisions about what they do from here.

The Hall of Mirrors would be a better idea.

What other job gives you 4 days off after such deplorable service?

4 days off, plus the first 6 weeks they have had off.. good life.

In all seriousness though, a break might be good, its been constant, short breaks, pressure, intense scrutiny. have a break, get refreshed, come back and lets start to grind away at the season. If i was goody, it would all be about going out and enjoying the footy now. the season is done, so pressure off, now enjoy it.. get some unexpected wins, win back some respect and build, lots of teams have these types of seasons, and i hate it, but it does happen and what else can you do about it..

Im also looking forward to the break.. 10 days until the next game. Demon free zone for a while.

I find these days off to be a bit confusing. I can understand why they are doing it but is it really the right sort of medicine ?

Some may be inclined to give them more than 4 days off. If you know what I mean.

I would hope some of the players get together during this time and begin to work out how they can get the train back on track.

I’d show the team a map of the MCG, highlight to the midfield the defensive end and explain to them they are not playing netball- there are no exclusion areas.

In seriousness, I think it’s more a break for the coaches- so they can Google the 6-6-6 rule and see what it means.

I'm not opposed to players getting a 4 day break to get away from footy and hopefully come back mentally refreshed after a poor start to season.

The amount of leave they get in offseason is excessive. Maybe thats why our players cant hit targets by hand or foot.

This  will surely help the teams fitness levels.  FMD

That's what great teams would do.. but we don't have a leader among any of them.. we are from from a great team.

Jones - Cant get a kick, refuses to sacrifice himself for better of the team  - cant have a captain on the brink of being axed..

Viney - tries to lead by example - but examples have been few and far between

Max - talks a lot.. i mean a lot.. Charismatic and has personality, but thinks talking is leading.

Nev - Quietly spoken respected player - who in all seriousness could be just about done.

Where is the next crop? People laughed when they said Jake Lever is the best leader we have.. its true., sad but true.

You honestly think they won't do work over the 4 days? Most footballers do some sort of session every day, whether it be recovery, running or weights. But you probably knew that, right?

It seems far too common to be easily outraged these days than to look for the boring truth

No Moonie

it’s just easy to be outraged at this Club.

I have said it before in all seriousness, we are a Club with “Special Needs” since PJ left his post nothing has changed except some people’s names.

This club cannot work hard for more than a few games here and there, been that way for a long time.

Moonie, we agree, but @Sir Why You Little needs something to be enraged about, imagine the impact on his mental welfare if he didn't

I was thinking about a CFMMEU controlled building site as a glaring example of what SWYL is looking for

Hahaha you are so funny, and you don’t care about results. You care about seeing “your boys” at training

Take a walk pal....

I agree Wiseblood it is hard to see how it could make them worse and who knows it might brighten up a few.

I still think the major problem are the injuries we have, we are playing a lot of VFL standard players who would not be getting a look in if the injuries were lower.

Add the loss of form of a few plus I have little doubt a couple are playing with injuries as well.

Add in that we saw on prelim day last year we are still players short of a GF list the result is likely to be a near bottom finish this year. I don't think rest periods/ honest meetings etc will make much difference, as my father used to say it is hard to pull up your socks when you don't have any on!

I would be worried about you otherwise Mate!!

A nuclear Bomb could go off at Goschs Paddock and Satyr wouldn’t notice anything different, as long as his boys were running about

Haha yes

The back Bench of both upper and lower houses :)

If cohesion, skills and the game plan are the main issues, it seems counter-intuitive to send everyone on a 4 day break.

I would have thought going back to basics and working on inside 50 effeciency would be a good start.

I think it's a goody ? Idea.

These 4 days with the players out of the house, apart from rehab'rs...  is a good time for the Footy Dept'  to get heads together,  and revamp what we're doing,  on and off-field.

Maybe we can settle on some tweaked defencive structures,  and maybe where we are heading for the second half on season 2019.

It might not make a difference for every player currently out of form, but if it makes a difference for even one in three, while not doing any harm to the others, then it would be well worth it. Just by the odds it should come in handy, when you consider just how many players are well, well down on 2018 typical form, and that we have, as far as I can see, no players who have improved significantly on 2018.

Meanwhile, players who are yet to even have a single game to the standard that was their average for 2018 include:

Hibberd, McDonald, McDonald, Spargo, Lewis.

And the list of other strugglers includes:

Viney, Jones, Frost, Nibbler, Weideman, Petracca, Spargo, Fritsch, and even Jetta.

Add it up, that's 14 players who were in or on the edge of our starting 22 most of last season, who are all well off form.

Add in half a dozen injuries to the best 22, you've actually only got five players who have sustained respectable form into the new season:

Gawn, Melksham, Brayshaw, Oliver and Salem

Long story short, anything that might turn around the form of the 14, without risking that of the 5, is worth a try.

And I'm quite happy to think short term right now because for me it is still all about clinging on with our nails until we get about a third of our best-22 back mid-season. I know it is fantasy, but beat the Hawks then beat Gold Coast...

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

The final score in Saturday's game against Hawthorn was almost identical to that from their last contest three months ago. Melbourne suffered comprehensive defeats in both games, but the similarities ended there. When they met in Round 9, the Demons were resurgent, seeking to redeem themselves after a lacklustre start to the season. They approached the game with vigour and dynamism, and were highly competitive for the first three quarters, during which they were at least on par with the Hawks. In the final term, they lapsed into error and were ultimately overrun, but the final result did not accurately reflect their effort and commitment throughout the match.

  • CASEY: Box Hill

The Casey Demons ended the regular season on a positive note and gained substantial momentum leading into the finals when they knocked the Box Hill Hawks off the top of the VFL ladder in their final round clash at Casey Fields. More importantly, they moved out of a wild card position in the finals race and secured a week's rest as they leapfrogged up the ladder into fifth place with their decisive 23-point victory over the team that had been the dominant force in the competition for most of the season.
