I went down to Milawa squash with hesitancy.

Decided to confront the potential humiliation with confidence and relaxed humour. Ready to accept defeat but only with honour. Ended with I think support and respect. There was recognition that when our backs were against the wall we responded.

Why do we have to be in this position. I am not sure that the players will bring the same effort and consistency next game .

Wil be interested in seingfre kick count. Umpire intervention did not seem to have the negative impact on offensives and defensive systems. Same actions did not seem to receive th same disruptions. 

Fantastic feeling and if able to be continued I may have a better life.

There were times tonight when his lack of mobility was very noticeable. But he was important tonight.

Match fitness, match ups and probably best playing the deep forward role like tonight PSD.  That way if his opponent does manage to get the better of him on the ground he will be starting from deep inside our defence which should help lesson the damage a little.

The Opp will also need to put their tallest defender (or someone tallish that has the ability to leap like AA).  And not every super tall defender will have the off the mark speed of an AA.

I’m currently 20,000 feet over the NT on a flight to Singapore. My plane was delayed an hour and thankfully that meant I got to see the final quarter. I can’t wipe the smile off my face. We are capable. We are hungry. We can play our game. Each week will be a challenge until we regain some key personnel. We are going to have to fight like Demons every week. That should be the team mantra.

Defensive intensity was back, it was great to see, have to back this performance up next week.

I hope Oscar is ok but I think it showed we're a better team without him.

Thanks for the replay. Yes that's the only thing I thought of as well, but not sure about a head knock.

Also agree we looked a better team, but not sure if the ball went down that way too often after that?

The Weid absolutely crunched the Swans 2 most dangerous players - Papley and Heeney - in big tackles. Had a couple of really nice handballs on both sides of the body and nailed his kicks, including a vital goal.

Not high possessions but an oddly valuable game. A bit of a reminder that just as you sour on him after 3 weeks he bobs up with some really good stuff. 

I really want to see him play some half back or even midfield just to test him in some different roles at times because he does the occasional really good thing at ground level.

Switched phone on and got result after a pleasant evening on banks of Saigon River

Did anyone notice Goodwin and McCarthy on the boundary line in the last few minutes as we were icing the game. McCarthy was talking into his headset and (my perception was) Goody pushed his microphone away to shut him up. Did I see that? Thoughts?

I saw that, I assumed that you have to press a button on the side of the headphones to talk and McCarthy had left his turned on and was laughing with Jones while Goody was trying to talk with the coaches upstairs? Nothing malicious in it.

Watched the game at my boyfriends. Such a great feeling to beat Sydney. Now no team has a significant winning streak over us. Great to see Jones back in form. Now we have finally overcome a stigma we couldn’t last  year (beating Sydney), we can finally progress further

Great team lifting win and when the chips were down the leaders came up with the the cream.

Jonesy Jack and Gawny outstanding but a  real contribution by all in the red and blue to start the 2019 season.

Big Swans hoodoo and on SCG broken the Buddy hoodoo also and bonus from debutants Pruessy and Marty Hore in a win that will give all a confidence boost.

The season is just starting and most of  the nearly dozen injured players all can look forward to joining the group in much better form.

At the ground the most noticeable thing was the improvement in our defensive running. The small ground and slow opposition helped, but we were able to really effectively slow them down. It’s a start.

Thanks @DeezNuts I thought Frost did a great job on Franklin but a few times that buddy got away from Frost, Salem was there to cover.

Always hard to tell on TV but did the two of them seem to work together more effectively to cover him this week?

For all I've defended Goodwin's game-plan with a wait-and-see mantra, there were clearly some tweaks and directives made. Think we may have relaxed the press again a little (hard to tell on TV and with BT and Bruce endlessly muppetting on) and obviously tried to control the ball more and by foot (haven't checked the marks/possession and kicks to handball ratio stats but I imagine they tell the story).

It allowed us to find space forward for the first time - and on a smaller ground - and aided with us trapping in it in and in our group-pressure and tackling intensity. Our mids moving into the forward-half were huge in this respect: Petracca, Viney, Oliver,  Brayshaw and Harmes all putting in and trying to force a stoppage/turnover, with Jones one of the beneficiaries. And all of a sudden our defence looks way better, despite ongoing concerns.

But the two-paced approach was the most pleasing aspect of the game and a sign of developing maturity. Also, when we bombed long we did so with much flatter kicks, and our forward balance looked much better with Preuss as a foil instead of Tmac and Weid as primary targets. Melksham, however, leads to lift; his poor form going under the radar to date - can't take a grab and too busy trying trying to draw contact and frees instead of meeting the ball in front.

Fritsch was class - a great series of disposals to advantage, a great demonstration of how a space zone or a series of spaces could be used - and this bloke is a forward! Jones was inspiring and determined - he had a cause to pursue whilst blending well amongst the forwards from the midline. An old, old MFC trait - Brian Dixon-ish, Stanley Alves-ish, Aaron Davey-ish. Very impressed with Hore. Frosty was focussed and negating, so Buddy had every right to look muddled and tish-faced. Heeney starred but was given every umpired opportunity - apparently the holding rules and frontal contact rules do not apply to him. So often, Heeney still gets away with pushed in the back, head-dipping into legal tackles for the 'free' and forward dives into the turf for the free. Early on in the game, the Swans were not penalised for anything - just given frees - whilst the Dees tackled legally and were penalised. Umpiring errors (deliberate as expected) were wearing thin and eventually ceased, thank heavens.

Preuss, not a bad start - showed some tricks so may that great Protector upstairs help future opponents when he gets to lead straight out in any line from FFwd - and he rucks like a pro with some really effective taps. His movement onfield needs attention and a speed addition, of course, but these will come with more efficient space usage. When he grabbed that throw-in in the pocket and converted a goal from a difficult snap, he showed the class that we were all hoping for; a few successive games and he will be 'on song'. One advantage of his game is that he does not over-possess the ball - he clears it very quickly and that includes long-shots with that kicking prowess. 

The run provided by Hibberd improved and was similarly supported by Stretch. The midline boys were lost early, but came back into the game strongly and assuredly as a chain of momentum gathered. I thought the Wagners were very good, attacking, intercepting. Good foot skills, as well. 

The pros in the team did their bit, all night and kept plugging away and blending as a team. Be good to have a fit Jetta back there again and the return of AVB, May and Lever will shore up the backline. Hunt and Harmes were good - a welcome return to form. Max was BOG for mine, easily. 

OMac has to go - 8 uses of the ball - always so slow and out of the play. Defensive errors and 3 main leakages resulting in goals to the Swans. He still does not have a clue.

Spargo was lively and is starting to look like a linkage specialist with his teammates downfield. Some nice yet unpractised passing by foot was achieved over the shorter distances to very good effect - particularly when ball retention was required to start a play to the goalmouth. 

Good, yet unexpected win, Dees!

While they might have been forced into these in some ways, I really hope the coaches keep doing the following:

- a one out deep tall forward, who doesn't go much further than 50 out even when we are defending. Helps straighten us up.

- give Frost an assignment, he plays much better 1 on 1 then in a zone. Put him on the forward most likely to roam. Leave omac playing the zone as the deepest tall defender, with hore, Hibberd etc doing the same zone.

- make sure Viney starts with aggression, it really rubbed off on a number of others, weids tackles were impressive but I think he (and others) need someone to inspire them.
