Our interest in Martin is more strategic. We negotiate with Carlton to not take him in the psd and they agree to be creative with pick swaps now or down the track. Alternately, tbey agree to not pick certain players we nominate now or in the future so they fall through to us. Until that happens we chase Martin hard with a longer term deal with triggers and get Nev Jetta to meet and offer to mentor him

We're restricted in trade picks because we traded our 2020 1st already and that means we can't trade any other 2020 picks (I incorrectly suggested a trade involving them earlier).

Right now the only picks we can trade are 3 and 8. Impossible to see Carlton coming up with something attractive to interest us.

I'm not totally against 3 for 6 and 2020 1st with GWS because it would put our other 2020 picks back in trade play now and I think the talk of 2020 picks slipping back is exaggerated.

How about our 8 for Carlton's 9 + 2020 2nd rounder, with understanding they don't take draftee X at 8 and we pass on Martin in PSD?

that would be draft fixing moonie and too obvious. need to be a bit more creative to pass muster

It will come down to whether we have the salary CAP. We had room for Elliott. If we take him its good by to JKH and Stretch. Looks like he may heavily forward load his requirements.

Pick wise its some compensation for being downgraded to pick 3 by the AFL granting GC a priority. If we take him in the PSD we can always trade him for a pick later.

If he is in the draft he goes where he is picked. The Ds will be very quiet about it all. Can you imagine how dumb we would look if we overlook him and he becomes a star at the blues. We would be the laughing stock. If we pick him and he is just a player we just say it was worth the risk.

Interestingly he was happy to go to the Bombers in 2018, so he has had interest in other clubs.

Nice to see a bit of media that isn't Andy Maher arrogantly gushing over Carlton picking him up in the PSD re manager interview yesterday

It always baffled me that we weren't going hard for him.

This is a perfect opportunity to snipe him without giving anything up other than money.

Get Steven May in his ear.

He might've been sick of having Steven May in his ear about defensive efforts all career already! ?

This. Think this could be massive. Carlton will now be looking for small forwards which will make freo nervous as  Carlton could nominate their academy player Henry at 9 and force freo to match and in effect cost freo a top 10 pick.  If we were to do a deal with freo to swap pick 8 for 10 and 22 while having an agreement with Carlton not to pick player we want at 9 and we will let them have a free run at Martin means we still get the player we want at 10 and get 22 as a bonus.

Hopefully he was mates with May.

May strikes me as the sort of teammate that wouldn’t exactly be everyone’s cup of tea.

really?

GO FOR IT. Martin is a quality player and quality players don't come cheap. It would be great to snatch one under the nose of those Carlton scumbags.

Can’t understand why we had availability in salary cap for Langdon and Tomlinson and an offer for Elliott.

Given Elliott stayed at the Pies, I’d presume we would have the $600k-year over a 3 year deal availability for Martin.

Where would he sit in your best 22? I can't envisage him at Melbourne unless I can see him in one of your best 22s.

A competently managed player list will always result in the flexibility to accomodate a player like Martin.

A team should aim to be x$ under the cap as a standing goal, and then pre-pay players once your list is settled to eat up the gap and be closer to the cap which then frees up future space.

You would only ever want to be at your cap without pre-payments if you were going hard for a premiership in that year. Collingwood could very well be in that spot for 2020.

If you bring in an Elliott or a Martin when you weren’t expecting to then you can’t do the pre payments to the same extent.

On top of this the AFL introduced further flex a couple of years back so a team can be under the minimum floor or over the maximum ceiling of the cap so long as it corrects itself on a rolling basis - meaning you can’t be forever under the minimum or over the maximum.

Interestingly GWS basically knew they would lose some of their top talent, so went with a unique approach that only they and Gold Coast could’ve done given their startup concession gluts of high draft picks all from the same year or tightly bunched for age profile. GWS project to exceed the cap but manage this through inevitably losing some of those high paid players but getting good picks in return to keep their list balanced for age profile, or having salary dump fire sales or letting free agents walk such as Scully, Tomlinson and Patton if they surprisingly retained more players than they anticipated (e.g. I expect they thought they would lose one or both of Kelly and Coniglio).

So things are seemingly getting juicy with him then, you almost wonder whether there's ulterior motives with certain "reporters" leaking certain stories. Yesterday my opinion was if he doesn't want to be at Melbourne then don't pick him, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't try to sway him towards us. The price on his head is an issue though but there could be a simple school of thought where if we pick him this year then maybe we can use him as bait for next season, and if he ends up finding that Melbourne can be his home then all the better.

It sounds like we are putting lots of consideration into this decision, it would be worth us having a spot available going into the PSD just to mess with the Blues even if we don't pick him!

This is a no brainer. Pick him.

The kid is talented. He doesn't have off field issues. Injuries, inconsistency and mainly playing for a really bad team has stunted his style of play.

Skills, quick, good mark and freakish ability. He has forward nous. Wait, isn't that what we are crying out for?

He is not going to sit out for 2 years.

Hoping we can convince him to come but we should take him regardless.

correct but we might just need to offload jkh and stretch for minimum pay juniors from the national draft or vfl

  • REPORT: Port Adelaide

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.

The Demons simply did not take their opportunities when they presented themselves and ultimately when down by 25 points effectively ending their finals chances. Goal kicking practice during the Bye?
