Maybe not wasting 1st round draft picks on defenders would be a start.

Go to the draft and continue to stock up on midfield depth like an outside runner with a bit of speed and another zippy small forward.

Lewis will finish this year, does that mean the need to bring in an experience head to continue that role on a leadership point of view? Roughead? Kade Simpson just as an example.

Lever would fill the general role in defence, and id be looking at  lever, t mac,may and even nev jetta to calm the team down and slow tempo down when momentum is going against us and viney brayshaw and oliver to drag it back our way and drag the team with them from the engine room. A spread of cohesive leadership is a better option then bringing someone in specifically for it, however roughead would still be servicable as a forward if clarko wants to let him go,no 3 year contracts though.

We've had three years now of absolutely butchering the trade and draft period, so it is imperative that we head back to the draft and stock up on talented kids, particularly through the midfield.

We have 4 AFL standard midfielders - contrast to teams like Collingwood & Geelong who have 8-10 players they can run through the middle. 

The Lever trade was, as plenty of people suggested at the time, a disaster which has set us back years. I wouldn't be surprised if we ultimately look back at this period as a repeat of the issues we had in the early 2000s which cost us so dearly later in the decade.

Got to get Lever and May on the park first before we settle our backline. While i am confident that will happen o also have my doubts with Levers body.

If we don’t make the finals this year then we will end up losing top end talent. If we cannot retain players then the draft is irrelevant. Top teams make the finals pretty much every year.

Shaun Higgins is the type of player we should target. Strong, quick, accumulator, elite foot skills, wins his own ball and not expensive.

he was a free agent, who had had a career riddled with injury, but has been fantastic for north since landing there

north were always the frontrunners, but i believe we were the second team chasing him at the time

coniglio will cost a lot more, in terms of contract, but will deliver gw$ a better than second round pick, which is what footscray got for compo - with that pick they chose lukas webb (pick 27)

It's never been as good as some here have made out, but it's not a complete disaster. 

The continual recruitment of depth players with limited scope for improvement is an issue along with the refusal to go after a small forward. Lever for 2 first rounders will continue to be critiqued as it was massive overs and with his inability to show he is a key position player thus far along with the change in rules, we have seen his value diminish.

It wasn't massive overs.  I'll concede that the injuries haven't helped, but I don't see it as massive overs.  His last month prior to that injury co-incided with us playing some of our best football.  That's not a coincidence.

And what small forwards should we have gone after?  Guys like Charlie Cameron and Luke Dahlhaus wanted to go back to their hometowns.  Outside of that I don't see a whole lot of quality that we could have chased that would have improved us a side.  Not to mention the fact that, up until last season, Jeffy Garlett was a 40 goal a year small forward for us.

This is not over a 1 year period. We have known for a long time that we can't rely on Garlett consistently. If we weren't busy trading the farm out for Jake Lever, then we could have traded for Devon Smith or drafted Jack Higgins for example. Dahlhaus would have been gettable if we were interested. Likewise, Lincoln McCarthy. 

Prior to drafting Bedford and Chandler we hadn't addressed the need. I don't know what the Spargo pick was, as his size and lack of speed and kicking penetration will always hold him back. Deciding to let Dean Kent go with no immediate replacement poor list management. 

Lever was good in that month, but he also did not play on any quality players during that period. With what we gave up I expect him to be able to compete with the best, we are yet to see him do this.

money...going through the list of free agents both restricted and unrestricted there weren't many at all that inspired much of my interest.

Not sure where the Pies are at with salary cap so there may be some leverage.

Just throwing it out there for discussion given our need for a "smaller" defensive forward

This is an interesting one given how he has so far played in the last 2 weeks. He signed for 1 year in October last year. I wonder how much the Pies have budgeted in the cap for him under the presumption that he'll recapture his best form. I would assume they probably haven't budgeted what others would be prepared to pay if he has a big year.

I still think he'll probably injure himself at some point this year however, or next year if we actually signed him on a decent contract

No it means we need to make sure Viney, T Mc, Gawn and Jetta are qualified and doing the job and then empower Lever, Oliver and Brayshaw to do the same with the younger players.

If Goodwin is the coach we all expect him to be then leadership will flow through him to the playing group. Josh Mahoney as well.

We really need to look at the process the Tigers put in place in 16/17 with Balme and fresh assistant coaches coming on board, filling a few gaps with smart trades, using their wasted year to get some good young talent some games and backing the coach. Not that this year is wasted just yet but there's a lot of sings pointing that way. The way the Tigers leaders all went to a new level in 2017 was something our senior players should look to. Our senior players could invest in some mindfulness to sort their heads out and that could help with a bit more belief and confidence for the younger guys. No more Jordan B Peterson either.

Let's just wait and see if Elliot can play the majority of games this year. He has been injured more often than not so I wouldn't be that keen unless his injury issues are proven to be a thing of the past.

Charlie is a very smart footballer who will be a regular once he builds his engine. He was pick 29 from memory or there abouts.
