North girl falls directly on Demon girls back while she’s lying on the ground.... nothing to see here

Edited by —coach—

Robbed by the umpires!

Those 3 dubious frees within 20m of North goals at the 7/8 min mark in th elast Qtr from which they kicked the winning goal.

And, the missed frees in our favour all game.  OMG!

Terribly deflating to have a really good game decided like that.

Completely shafted by the maggots.

Disgraceful umpiring.

[censored] you umps you bunch of fuckwits!

If this is the future for AFL umpiring then this game is quite bleak. By far the worst display i have seen in a long time.

More scripted than WWE. Might back Essendon for the blokes flag.

One of the most lopsided umpiring quarters I can remember. Frustrating! King gifted at least 2 of her goals and her free in the last was an absolute sham.

The umpires just killed our season.

If that umpiring was against our men’s team I’d be minus a tv. Beyond atrocious

Some shockers by the umps.

You know you’ve jumped the shark when even the commentators are talking about it.

Anyone know what the frees for and against were in the last? Glad that wasn’t the men’s team or I’d have a frikn meltdown

Could not agree more. The dees should complain. Appalling.

That last one against mithen  was inexplicable. I assume it was for dragging it in and not getting out. Please.

Well done our girls on a fighting effort all day in serious heat for two weeks in a row.

its always hard to beat a good team especially when they have pillaged all the other teams to create a super team, and then having 3 extra players on your team who have the luxury of being able to blow a whistle every time something goes against them and reverse the flow. Well done AFL and well done umps on demonstrating just how easy it is to influence a game of footy ?

That in the back with 2 mins to go not paid in our defensive square was unbelievable.

Several soft frees to North...what's that about?

Having said that, a kick in with 2 mins to go when you are four points down goes only one place - UP THE GUTS!

Instead the gals went wide and misdirected and coughed up a free the other way.

When we regained they ball they refused to do anything but go wide. Killed their own chance. It should be a tough review.

Yep agreed re going wide in the last 2 mins. Fumbles and dropped marks st critical points in those last few minutes also. . Also having no one inside 50 and giving them a spare down there didn’t help. It’s hard to watch the woman sometime... we miss Daisy badly.

That was disgusting umpiring. And a few too many errors really - L Pearce an easy dropped mark with a couple of minutes to go and too many wide kicks.

Disappointing because the pressure and work rate was excellent, backline were solid, some of the lead up play to goals was great.

Probably the best game of AFLW ever until 3/4 time and then the heat and poor umpiring wrecked it.

Lily Mithen's best ever game.

The annoying thing is watching Paxman who is a super player but she takes on too many tackles and dishes out bad handballs under pressure because she's not been trained up her whole career how to be a smooth mover with dual sided skills. Then you've got little T Hanks who's a jet and can bob and weave, handball both sides, run with the ball or dish it backwards and you see the standard that is achievable in the future.

If the AFL want us to watch AFLW, and I presume it is in their interests, stop serving up second class suburban umpires. And while I'm at it... stop stuffing around with AFLX and put the money into the women, who have had a legitimate competition for well over a decade!!!

The AFL needs to inform that second rate, wanna-a-be, suburban whistle blower that the hands in the back rule has changed!

TBH, I think the AFL is expecting professional level football from the players but are not expecting the same from umps.
Why would you be an ump?

They need to start attracting a better calibre of person by renumerating them well at both AFL and AFLW level. And.... dropping and de-listing them when they're s#$t.
There's no reason why they can't have a pool of 40 to 50 umpires just like an AFL team has and recruit and de-list if their decision making is poor.
It's a blight on the game. I know it's hard to officiate the game these days but geez, they should have the nous to put the whistle away in such a good (and critical) contest as this.
They pay so much for television rights and put so much money into both forms of the game, surely they could do the same for umps and potentially recruit good ex-footballers who have retired, didn't quite make it or have had their careers cut short etc.
Just pay them to be a professional and drop them when they are not. Make it a career path that men and women take seriously because they certainly can't be taken seriously at the moment.

Razor Ray is the best we've got?

It was very hot out there.  Tough conditions for players (and spectators).  We worked so hard all day but they have assembled a v good list so it was a ripper contest.   Dees had lots of contributors.  It was the best all round game I’ve seen from Kate Hore and Paxman, Mithen and Phillips were good all day.  L Pearce no coaches votes today but gave her all.  The King in the back ‘free’ and the other last qtr one in front ends up being the difference between the two most skillful AFLW sides, which was heartbreaking.   It’s going to be really hard for us to make finals from here.

Blacktown 2.05pm next Sunday 3 March so Meggs and son will be watching on TV.  Incidentally it will also be AVB’s birthday...

  • GAMEDAY: West Coast

It's Game Day and the Demons have a chance to notch up their third consecutive win — something they haven’t done since Round 5, 2024. But to do it, they’ll need to exorcise the Demons of last year’s disastrous trip out West. Can the Dees continue their momentum, right the wrongs of that fateful clash, and take another step up the ladder on the road to redemption?

  • FEATURE: 1925

A hundred years ago today, on 2 May 1925, Melbourne kicked off the new season with a 47 point victory over St Kilda to take top place on the VFL ladder after the opening round of the new season.  Top place was a relatively unknown position for the team then known as the “Fuchsias.” They had finished last in 1923 and rose by only one place in the following year although the final home and away round heralded a promise of things to come when they surprised the eventual premiers Essendon. That victory set the stage for more improvement and it came rapidly. In this series, I will tell the story of how the 1925 season unfolded for the Melbourne Football Club and how it made the VFL finals for the first time in a decade on the way to the ultimate triumph a year later.

  • PREVIEW: West Coast

Saturday’s election night game in Perth between the West Coast Eagles and Melbourne represents 18th vs 15th which makes it a tough decision as to which party to favour. The Eagles have yet to break the ice under their new coach in Andrew McQualter who is the second understudy in a row to confront Demon Coach Simon Goodwin who was also winless until a fortnight ago. On that basis, many punters might be considering to go with the donkey vote but I’ve been assigned with the task of helping readers to come to a considered opinion on this matter of vital importance across the nation. It was almost a year ago that I wrote a preview here of the Demons’ away game against the Eagles (under the name William from Waalitj because it was Indigenous Round).  I issued a warning that it was a danger game, based on my local knowledge that the home team were no longer easybeats and that they possessed a wunderkind generational player in Harley Reid who was capable of producing stellar performances playing among men a decade and more older than he.  At the time, the Eagles already had two wins off the back of a couple of the young man’s masterclasses and they had recently given the Bombers a scare straight after their Anzac Day blockbuster draw against the then reigning premiers.

  • NON-MFC: Round 08

Round 08 of the 2025 AFL Season kicks off on Thursday with a must-win game for the Bombers to stay in touch with the top eight, while the struggling Roos seek a morale-boosting upset. Friday sees the Saints desperate for a win as well if they are to stay in finals contention and their opponents the Dockers will be eager to crack in to the Top 8 with a win on the road. Saturday kicks off with a pivotal clash for both sides asthe Bulldogs look to solidify their top-eight spot, while Port seeks to shake their pretender tag. Then the Crows will be looking to steady their topsy turvy season against a resurgent Blues looking to make it 4 wins on the trot. On Election Night a Blockbuster will see the ladder-leading Pies take on the Cats, who are keen to bounce back after a narrow loss. On Sunday the Sydney Derby promises fireworks as the Giants aim to cement their top-eight status, while the Swans fight to keep their season alive. The Hawks, celebrating their centenary, will be looking to easily account for the Tigers who are desperate to halt their slide. The Round concludes on Sunday Night with a top end of the table QClash with significant ladder implications; both Queensland teams are in scintillating form. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • REPORT: Richmond

The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.
