Don't think we're comparing players, more circumstance

Scott Thompson and JJ circumstances quite different as I recall.   I don’t remember Scott being dropped or struggling when available to be selected.

Can't remember specifics but have a memory that Neil was a little tougher on Scotty re. getting games. A long time ago, all very hazy, just a gut feel

So I take it he’s playing?

How does it work for the cheer squad if a player has a milestone coming up but isn’t cemented in the 22?

We have the graphic and the letters ready but don’t stick them on until the team is announced. That is, the whole squad, not just the 22.

I rate JJ higher than others, and simply believe our 22 is better with him in it. Although I also rate Sparrow who probably has more of an upside than JJ, at the moment I would drop Sparrow before Jordon.

JJ gives me a strong Brett Lovett vibe - looks like a plodder, is going faster than expected, while remaining steady, unflustered and focused. I see him as a 200 game player, and hope that it is with the Dees.

Do you ever shelf a banner for future use?

No, because every week the wording is different. The sponsors’ logos we keep and re-use.

In the many years that our current leaders have run the cheer squad, it’s never eventuated that a milestone player has been omitted at the last minute, or couldn’t play because injured. (Hopefully I haven’t mozzed the next 200-gamer.)

 😬

When Jayden Hunt played his 100th it was an ANZAC eve match. Every year both cheer squads make this particular banner together and there’s no room for a 100th game graphic which takes up a whole side. So the following round this is what he ran out to…

Funny that you say Lovett while I'm getting a bit of a James McDonald vibe. Could be another 50 games before he peaks and he won't ever seem flashy or be a game breaker, but he could deliver a long period of humble excellence.

Would be very sad to lose him, and also I think it would be unfortunate from a list management perspective as it is these good citizen players that keep a team at a high level without burning up the salary cap.

With injuries and loss of form I reckon JJ will play plenty of games this season. We really are blessed with depth.

We need JJ every week. He'd walk into a regular position with any other club.

Really? Collingwood, Sydney, Geelong? Who would he replace? Played every game in 2021, and is now struggling to be best 23. Yes he would get a regular game with 14 other clubs, which is probably the reason he won’t be with us next year

Apparently they paint their words onto their banners. Can’t let all that experience in graffitiing go to waste now, can we. 😁

Is that an 'internal industry' joke? Hyper specific to cheer squads?

It’s a stoopid me joke.

There’s actually a lotta love and respect for one another. The other cheer squads are doing exactly what we do, only they’re doing it for a [censored] team and we’re doing it for the Dees. 😁 We help each other out, especially regarding interstate matches. For example we found out late last night that with the help of Peter, the Crows cheer squad leader, we can now use the home cheer squad’s bay tomorrow for our match instead of Port’s cheer squad using it for the entire day. But that’s probs not a great example coz Peter might have other reasons to boot Port out of their bay. 🤭

Edit: was just told Peter will be there on Saturday to “facilitate” the setting up of bays. Apparently he’s happy to help. 😁

Country boy.  Played well under pressure in TAC cup grand final.   Clean disposal.  Good decisions.  Pacy type but can get contested footy. I had him 60+ range but nonetheless a good pick imo.

4+ years on.

JJ was the “23rd man” in our premiership team of 2021. A solid contributor throughout 2021 playing every game and a rising star nomination… but ultimately unfortunately could not get on field in the GF (despite Harmesy getting those lower leg cramps 🤣🤣

He was on the fringes yet looked more likely last year again to cement a spot with 22 games and being part of the midfield group.

With Hunter joining the Dees, Jordon seems to have been downgraded and lost his spot.

Versus the Suns, JJ played his role last week. Went at 89% efficiency at his 17 disposals.

Now JJ is dropped again for our round 9 game v hawks. Very unlucky imv to be replaced by Spargo.  Not sure what message is being sent.  I thought with Chin and Kozzzy we have 2 small forwards and Spargo wasn’t setting the world on fire prior to his concussion.

So with JJ out again and his contract ending this year, is he likely to leave and get better opportunities elsewhere.  As we previously downgraded him to the rookie list at the end of 2020, he is a free agent and will get definite offers if he remains unsigned.  50+ games and still only 22, he is a good young bloke with lots of footy ahead of him

(ps. I’d like to see him perhaps tried as a small defender role to tackle some of the Papley, Cameron, Greene, Rankine types).

I think you would lose him anyway if you try to turn him into a lock down defender lol .

Midfielders want to midfield.

I prefer Spargo, Chandler and ANB in the rigid forward roles to allow Kozzie to be more expansive in the midfield/fwd spark role. Kozzie is just better and more impactful.

Also, Rivers looks like graduating from HBF University and becoming a solid mid who is quicker and is a better kick than Jordon…

These things happen to good teams…

A can’t believe the constant devaluing of JJ. He has been a consistently excellent contributor, rarely makes a mistake and is still early in his career - will end up having a significant career, if not with us, elsewhere.

he's a consistent player who is there or thereabouts in terms of selection

in terms of his role, he's behind the main midfield / wing options, not a pressure forward, and not a rebound nor a lockdown defender

it's either him or sparrow ahead of harmes for mine in terms of midfield rotation, and i can understand why they prefer the physicality of sparrow

In India, facilitators are professional grafters. Just keep one eye on Peter next time @WalkingCivilWar.

GAMEDAY: Rd 17 vs West Coast

It’s game day and the Demons return to Melbourne to play the Eagles at the MCG for the first time in over a decade. A win keeps the Dees finals hopes alive whereas a loss will almost certainly slam the finals window shut.

    CROSSROADS by The Oracle

Melbourne stands at the crossroads.  Sunday’s game against the West Coast Eagles who have not met the Demons at the MCG in more than ten years, is a make or break for the club’s finals aspirations.  That proposition is self-evident since every other team the club will be opposed to over the next eight weeks of footy is a prospective 2024 finalist. To add to this perspective is the fact that while the Demons are now in twelfth position on the AFL table, they are only a game and a half b

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

    INSANITY by Whispering Jack

Somehow, the Melbourne Football Club managed it twice in the course of a week. Coach Simon Goodwin admitted it in his press conference after the loss against the Brisbane Lions in a game where his team held a four goal lead in the third term:   "In reality we went a bit safe. Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well
