Well until we start training it's over for footy...

This is the worst period of the year for me as footy gets taken over by racing, some weird pastime people continue to call a sport for some unknown reason.

A more pointless pursuit I cannot think of.

Can anyone tell me when we're back on the track?

It will be a bit later this year because of our finals appearances, how strange is that.

Bring on season 2019...and to think some want to shorten the season, must have rocks in their heads.

Well there is still that thing called The Draft rjay and then the shielas games which leave me way more bored than the spring racing.

Now the dust has settled, watched the Geelong final again last night - straight through - no ad breaks! How good was the tackling! How we missed those second quarter goals!! What an absolute smashing. Elimination Final tonight vs Hawthorn.......... Yep, could be a long summer!

Off season for me is NBL, NBA and cricket although the way the aussies are going against the Pakistan I’m not sure it will be too good to watch.

It will probably be as rough as sandpaper to watch

The cricket vs Pakistan has had one of the funniest sport moments in a long time

That was unnecessarily abrasive.

It was an exhausting end to a great season. Happy to relax for a few weeks with the EPL and NHL.

The NBA is back,  The NFL is pumping and the world series is about to start. If that doesn't get you excited I can't help you!

I’ve never been able to get in to those yank sports.  I’ve never understood how you can come to barrack for a team without some kind of tie to it, be it geographically or parental indoctrination. It always seems artificial to me, and without a team to support I find it hard to engage at all.

The A League kicked off last night.

There's one game free to air each week on Saturday night.. Channel 1.

Tonight is the Melbourne Derby from Docklands between Melbourne Victory and Melbourne City. Kick off is 7:50pm.

It sees the debut of Keisuke Honda for Victory. Honda is/was arguably one of the top 10 players out of Asia and Japan's best player.

For those who dismiss the game ...Try it.. you may enjoy it... the rest of the world does ;)

I think you are over thinking it Nasher. Just watch it and fall in love with the game. Eventually you will find a team you resonate with. Just keep watching and enjoy until you click with a team. It's helped me over the past 20 years, I actually got to see a few teams of mine actually win championships, which has been rewarding as a fan.

As a mug basketballer (and a fair spud in the realms of mug basketballers at that), my interest in the NBA was piqued by admiration of guys like Charles Barkley, Patrick Ewing and Shaquille O'Neal and my yearning to be able to do what they could.

Being a stiff and uncoordinated put paid to those plans pretty quickly but the interest never died.

Test cricket just around the corner - tick. A struggling Australia is a breath of fresh air. We will see some young stars emerge and the death of the nasty bogan culture that has dominated Australian cricket since Lillee and marsh.

A-League - tick. It is finally producing world class football and 1 or 2 games per week are actually watchable.

EPL - tick. Except that you have to watch it via Optus. Massive fail.

Basketball of any kind - simply a boring sport. Only thing going for it is watching the athleticism of freaks like LeBron James.

Golf - No. Apart from those days of 42 degrees where even golf is better than trying to breathe outside.

Horse racing - No. C grade celebrities talking vacuously about their new dress, suit or "fascinator" interspersed with gambling adds and inane sub-commentary, followed up by 3 minutes of watching horses flogged to death.

Local sport - yes. Find a tree at your local A grade matches, take an esky and some nibbles. VERY enjoyable.

I love NFL and I don't follow a team.  I have lived in the States for two decent stints which helped me get across the line of understanding.  i think if you get over the initial learning curve you'll grow to love it too.  I'm not an officionado of all the set plays but I understand the rules and the basic strategies and it's very enjoyable.  It's a completely different concept to AFL, much more structured.  The H&A season of just 16 rounds then play-offs makes you hungry for more.

I like baseball too and it's more immediately understandable and accessible but the absolute saturation coverage of the ridiculously long season with so many H&A games eventually put me off it a bit.

I love basketball and was a member of the Tigers for 30 years and then they deleted my team. Still like the game but I cannot watch United. If we get a second team in Melbourne in 2019 I may go again. I pray for a return of the Tigers but doubt that will happen as the United people own the name. IMO basketball is way better at a game. On TV it loses dimension.

I feel you Old Dee. I was a passionate S.E. Melbourne Magic fan as a kid. I lost all interest as soon as they merged with North Melbourne.

That team (albeit it too came from a merger) had an identity that was just irreplaceable. It was like the rep the Tigers had albeit they were our fierce rivals. The Titans were just soulless which is probably how you feel about United.

SE Melbourne Magic is coming next season I believe.

Try following the Brisbane Bullets. They were out of action for 7 to 8 yrs I think and then come back 2 yrs ago and win the wooden spoon both yrs.

Following the. Bullets is like following the dees a few yrs ago, bloody frustrating!

Anyway we have Memberships and go when they play up here so we get to be frustrated live as well as when watching them on the idiot box. Such joy following successfull sports teams!!

Great Derby game between Victory and City.

Excellent debut from Honda... controversial penalty and the usual spills and thrills... 2 (City)-1 (Victory)

Crowd 40K at Docklands
