A couple of more serious Max Gawn gems from last night:

  • in a post season email to all his team mates he wrote: "you can't win a premiership in the off-season, but you sure as hell can lose one;  and
  • he adopted a "no excuses" approach to his 2018 pre-season, meaning that he left absolutely no stone unturned in his preparation for the season ahead.  He urged all his team mates to do adopt the same approach to the up-coming pre season.

Great footballer and great leader.

Melky was there, finishing an admirable 7th.

Next season it’s your turn Christian Petracca. A guy with that level of talent should be pushing for top 5 in the B&F every year from now on ... or he’s not trying hard enough.

Yeah missed Melks, oops.

A quick look at the list and the notable absentees, Tracca has to be the biggest. Didn't miss games, played well at times, but also went absent often enough to miss out... This off season will show a lot about what he's got. What he brings can be the exact missing element that we need.

Petracca averaged 21 touches and 0.8 goals/game in 2018. Played some good games but still a bit too hot and cold with a tendency to drift out if it for long periods. I think he can get a lot fitter.

A rampaging Christian Petracca who can average 25 touches and 1.5 goals a game will see us very close to winning the premiership in 2018.

That's the knock I hear a lot of people, including impartials, say... They reckon he's too heavy. Simple as that.

I gotta say it feels true. I'd love to see him take to heart Max's words in his acceptance.

I agree with that. Look at the fitness levels on guys like Gawn, Oliver, Viney, Harmes.

CP5 still looks like the penny hasn’t dropped on the sort of aerobic capacity you need to dominate at this level. Eating habits as well. A big mindset shift required from Christian this preseason.

Yup. Needs to retain his power and cut away as much of the fat as he can. His power is his greatest asset but he can't use it if he's not moving to the right places.

Gee he was blowing hard in games this year. Always looked stuffed while other guys were jogging pointing fingers.

Probably the wrong thread for this but anyway...

I don't reckon his training habits are wrong, more misguided. They probably worked him into a place of being a power athlete as he'd be playing forward and doing short minutes in the midfield. People always say he's a Robbie Gray type. I have to say I don't really see that, but I'd love him to lean up like that. You can still be a star forward without being heavy.

Trac is about as lean as anyone at the club. He is pure muscle (that's why he weighs so much).

Needs to boost his strength and drop some muscle (hard but can be done - go from a bodybuilder to a power lifter).

Loved Max’s reference to Clarry saying he will win the next 10 blueys. He’s not short on confidence the lad.

The whole club now knows what they have. It's awesome. Everyone's standing up and taking notice of Clarry. Never had anyone like him.

Just left the afterparty . BOG contenders. T Mac. Gus . Lever. And Clarry. All players in good spirits  levers dance moves are Mr bean like. Hogan amongst it . Jeffy was a bit of a lonely figure. Jones getting around to every group was great to see. Very interesting to see the different Clicks amongst the playing group. Of the coaching group Jade Rawlings was a much loved figure. Plapp , Plunket and Ben Matthews also getting lots of love from the players. Max engaging with everyone. Love this club

Max is the next captain for mine. He should be a co-captain, but the way he spoke at that BnF had leader written all over it.

The best thing about it is Clarry know too. The talk of him driving the standards is exactly what we haven't had from our sublimely talented youngsters. He is going to be something special

Could we see Max in the VC position next year? Definitely sounds like his leadership has been massive over the last 12 months. Also strikes me as a bloke the whole playing group would want to play for.

He's joint VC with Lewis.

To be honest, I never really thought of Max as necessarily leadership group material. Definitely an on-field or spiritual leader in the way he goes about it but not as a motivator or serious role model.

His speech at the B&F made me see him in a new light. I was hanging off his every word, not just laughing at his jokes, and was about ready to take myself off to the dietitian he was so convincing. Certainly, I got the impression that the other players look up to him in more ways than one in recent times.

Viney yes, sorry. Not Brayshaw though,  I don't think. There is a reason he missed the first three games and it isn't only concussion related. He got himself back in the team and played wondefully though

    TRAINING: Monday 16th December 2024

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

Demonland's own Whispering Jack was not in attendance but he kicked off proceedings with the following summary of all the Preseason Training action to date. We’re already a month into the MFC preseason (if you started counting when the younger players in the group began the campaign along with some of the more keen older heads)

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
