Peter Bell just responded to my email about Jesse. Credit where credit is due. He was very polite.

It makes his decision to go to Freo even more baffling: leaves a team on the brink of success for one at the bottom, takes only a three year deal and a pay cut.  Baffling.

Its no wonder we weren't able to get a better trade deal - much easier to get top picks if player is on a long-term multi $m deal.

That is strange... it really is

He’s lived on Melbourne for several years. Did he not make friends here? Doesn’t his Mum live in Adelaide now? It’s all about the money. Make no mistake. Why go to such a [censored] club when ours is on the way up?

don't think he got much of a pay rise at all if reports are to be believed and melbourne certainly would have offered him more for an extension.

agree, the family bit is a little odd, with mum (and her family) in adelaide and jessie's 3 siblings having a gap of 12 years on him.

so that leaves his mates and lifestyle in perth?  i dunno.

(Whew - finally caught up with the front of the thread)

So she's American?  Maybe he thought there was some apple pie waiting in the oven where they used to live?

I haven't really bought the notion that he wasn't invested in the club, or questioned his passion to win, but the above does put it in the spotlight.

For reasons we could all understand, perhaps footy isn't first and foremost in his life anymore? Maybe getting himself around family and friends is the most important thing right now, which under the circumstances you couldn't blame him for.

Either way, I agree that we have done well out of this, and while I understand why others might be disappointed in the overall deal, I'm happy with how it turned out and I hold no ill feeling whatsoever towards Jesse. I wish him well at Freo, but I'm also super excited for what our clubs future holds!

lol - good pickup. i dunno why i typed mom, i don't usually use that term

With May rolling into the backline I'm looking forward to watching Fritsch hopefully going forward.

We seemed a bit one dimensional with Jesse playing.

Much more unpredictable with TMAC Weid Tracc and Gawn floating forward. I think Fritsch is a Brad Green in the making if they give him the chance up front.

interesting and weird fact

Jesse Hogan was  CHB in the U18 All Australian side

Steven May was  FF in the U18 All Australian side

This would have to go down as one of the strangest trades that has ever happened. There has been more drama and twists and turns than your average Neighbours story line.

Post the reply.

He was just interviewed on Perth radio and admitted to the ‘feather in the cap’ saying being a poor choice of words. He sounds like a decent guy, just didn’t come across it during the first week of trade week.

I'm hoping Andrew Brayshaw gets very homesick this year after his terrible incident with Gaff. Would only be right and proper that Freo let him come to Melbourne on compassionate grounds. We'd be happy to give you Bell-ends a future 4th rounder....

Would be great to see him at MFC but he's not the sort of bloke to say "put it there, i said"

A considerable problem across the last two seasons.

What do you mean just hope?

Gus and the MFC should be constantly in his ear telling him how great it is over here and what he is missing out on with the Dockers (the MCG, competing in finals etc) planting and well fertilizing those seeds of thought in his mind like Freo did to us with Jessy.

Brothers playing together like you and big brother Anthony did for a few years.  How great was that Jnr?

It actually makes sense because there are so many permuted inferences of that one, quaint, little Elizabethan word. Linguistics rules!

There are some players and player managers that are complete nuffies that would put out some really disrespectful stuff.  I thought the message came across as pretty genuine and classy.  Photo is a nice touch.

Must say I find this all much easier to accept as genuine on Jessies part based on the understanding that he took a pay cut and a fairly modest length of contract.  I still think we got significantly short changed by Freo on draft picks they traded, but also acknowledge that it may have been the best all round result we were ever likely to get in the circumstances.

bugger.....ill have to pick another pseudonym now that Hogan has gone- his not my hero anymore.

Losing Hogan sucks.

But having accepted that he wanted to go home, I'm more than happy with the way things panned out for us in the end.

It's a different landscape and he'll hate being the centre of attention in a small town over the next few years.

I know it's a silly thought, but I don't care.

Freo has history with Croad and Tarrant.

Yep, got to agree, specially seeing there might be a bit more we do not know....

That article mentions mental health issues which had been alluded to but not stated outright. Wouldn't surprise considering his last 2-3 years and you can't blame him for wanting to get back to his mum, siblings and mates. This is a bit different to generic "homesickness" the guys been through more than any 23yo should over the last 2 years.

  • CASEY: Geelong

There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

  • REPORT: Geelong

I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

  • PREGAME: Essendon

Facing the very real and daunting prospect of starting the season with five straight losses, the Demons head to South Australia for the annual Gather Round, where they’ll take on the Bombers in search of their first win of the year. Who comes in, and who comes out?

  • NON-MFC: Round 04

Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact. Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the ‘G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start. Saturday night sees North Melbourne take on Sydney at Marvel Stadium, with the Swans looking to build on their first win of the season last week against a rebuilding Roos outfit. Sunday’s action begins with GWS hosting West Coast at ENGIE Stadium, a game that could get ugly very early for the visitors. Port Adelaide vs St Kilda at Adelaide Oval looms as a interesting clash, with both clubs form being very hard to read. The round wraps up with Fremantle taking on the Western Bulldogs at Optus Stadium in what could be a fierce contest between two sides with top-eight ambitions. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?
