Suggestions that Tommy couldn’t be moved back to defense on a semi permanent or swing man on needs basis to me really lack critical thought.

Tommy is both one of the fittest players and best defenders we have on his day.  Distinctly recall him being one of the few players to curb the super athletic Nick Riewoldt in Nick's prime.  I could imagine a scenario where for instance Frost was being carved up by Joe Daniher and we wanted to wrestle back control of the game, so shifted Tommy onto him.  Frosty has great burst speed, but Tommy's endurance and aerobic capacity are practically unparalleled for a guy of his size in the AFL post Nick Riewoldt.

Concerns about Tommy's foot skills and decision making down back are also being over played.  He has moved on from the scared deer in headlights mode that use to define his play down back at times, through a combination of improved self and team confidence and system.  He regularly ventures up the ground in his forward role these days and his foot skills can be observed to be quite sufficient and even prolific at times.

All the above said, I think he is a gun forward and that's where I'd prefer he was utilized, but the flexibility he provides to be switched to the backline is an asset to the team not something to be dismissed or cringed at.

Wow!

After the 'treatment' by the Dockers alleged negotiating team, if we were a spiteful club, this trade with GCS would now take place. In addition but alternatively, if we were a club looking to improve that final step to achieve a Grand Final, this trade would still take place. Mahoney's use of a couple of days space, following our rejection of the Freo trade offer in all its generosity and fairness, could really emphasise the disdain and unprofessional strategies employed by Freo in the first offers to acquire Hogan, like an exploding cigar.

This supposed Gold Coast trade I suspect is a load of ?. His only reason for requesting a trade was homesickness and we were dealing with May for a possible deal following Hogan’s move west. He will not go to the Gold Coast.

The only possible way I see Jesse in Freo colours is that if another club gets involved in order to satisfy our desire for picks/May (GC could be involved as one of the clubs). But for now I’m assuming Jesse will continue being a Demon and we have every right to tell Freo to bugger off with any negotiations.

Is it though?  When I first saw it I thought it was pretty far-fetched, but it could have some substance, particularly if the real issue isn't homesickness. We have all conveniently fallen for that reasoning, but do we know it's true?

With our list, it's unlikely Jesse could maximise his earnings like he could at either Freo or GCS.  The Suns may offer him  6 mil over 5 years if May leaves and they load the contract appropriately (apparently the Freo offer is 4.5 mil over 5 years).  God knows with the loss of Ablett and now Lynch they need some sort of drawcard to get the few fans they have to turn up to home games, it ain't going to be Lachie Weller.

All this may or may not tempt Hogan (no pun intended), but I don't think it's beyond the realms of possibility.

I could completely understand if Jesse and his manager may not want to ever speak to Freo again after what's gone on (again based on the assumption they were blind-sided by their churlish tactics the way everyone else was)

Ahh, here we go. The poster who knows eff all during the year, then at trade time, suddenly knows every intimate detail that gets discussed in the FD, right at the moment that you could probably just assemble all the rumours and take a wild stab and get to the same conclusion. Add a dash of “trust me, this is rock solid” and there you have it.

The only surprising thing is that it’s taken over 300 pages of this thread for him to turn up.

But he says it with such conviction Nash, and we're only really looking to confirm our own bias in this thing after all.

I choose to believe in aliens living amongst us - Jesse Hogan is an alien - there I said it!

I feel like a filthy pirate after reading that. “Stand there ground and walk away”, uhhm huh?

It doesn't ring true though.  Why put out a public statement about 'due diligence' and imply that there's a problem with the merchandise - when it's actually the price you want to pay. i.e. you're happy to take the merchandise, but this is about being a small man in a big person's world and needing to 'bend 'em over'?

I didn't read it as - 'there was an issue with the character of of Hogan', I read it as another convoluted corporate speak way of saying, we are not prepared to meet Melbourne at their steadfast request of high end picks.

Freo just playing funny buggers . Suits their audience and agendas.

Some seriously funny delusion and denial in this thread.

People just can't see the obvious. Some can, but considered heretics.

Don't count on Hogan being at Dees by Wed.

Tommy not going back. That's the whole point of getting May.

Go Dees

That article suggests it will get done once Neale is traded, as everyone already thinks.

Freo are just using tactics to try get the best deal possible, but obviously they aren't trading with amateurs so we will have our 'walk-away' price and that is fair enough.

Pick 5 and 2019 2nd round will get it done, which is a bit disappointing as I think he is worth pick 5 and a pick around 15-18, but that is really just crying over spilt milk.

We will send 5 to GC and hopefully get a 2nd pick back to use in the draft.

This isn't about them not wanting Jesse all of a sudden. It's about getting something for nothing.

I wish we could go dodgy eBay seller on them and give them their win by accepting the second rounders but then send them one of those blow up Jesse dolls and then not return their emails.

Rather stupid of Bell to release such a strong statement on Friday.  Suspect he has taken a fair bit of internal heat since and some powerful people (Sponsors, Coterie etc) have been asking questions.

Sponsors certainly wouldn't be happy as Jesse is a huge marketing medium for them.

In marketing terms, Jessie is Freo's Buddy!  He is an enormous drawcard in Sydney.  People flock to games just to watch him play, his name sells memberships, merchandising, sponsorhip etc.  He brings in a lot more than the $1m pa they pay him.

Freo need Jessie off the field as much as they do on.  Look at the big picture, Bell!!!!

I think this is the most likely outcome but strangely, known troll GNF has said exactly what I've heard about Jesse.  It is the FD preference to keep him.  My source is well connected but I don't know where his information came from so I take it all with a grain of salt.

What I admire about you is your ability to have certainty around a situation that is anything but certain and your ability to sprout it probably close to 50 times in this thread alone.

One of the critical unknowns about this deal is the relationship between MFC and Hogan.  If it is as I've heard and GNF suggests then MFC are in a very good position and can't really lose.  If not Jesse's situation is anything but clear.

Oh, and Graz, I agree with you.  Jesse to GCS on a mega-deal, AFL ambassadorship, Jesse out of the limelight which he might enjoy and he becomes a leader of a club that now has full AFL backing and a good administration.  GCS won't be much good next year but we have seen ourselves how a basket case can be turned around and GCS are better placed than we were to achieve that.

Interesting days ahead.

The only thing I'm certain about is that there are posters with diametrically opposite views who state with 100% certainty they are right and their opponent is full of crap.  Trouble is, even after one side is eventually proved right, I doubt it will increase my confidence in their posts in future.

There, I've offended everyone. :D

I have not heard anything. I am ambivalent to Hogan leaving providing we get a player that makes us better. I am glad we have Mahoney not Bell negotiating on behalf of our team. I think Fremantle have disgraced themselves and wonder why a player would want to go there or stay there.

GCS are better placed than we were because the AFL is desperate for the franchise up there to succeed. I don’t think it’s beyond the bounds of credibility to think that the AFL would be pulling all of the necessary levers to get Hogan there (special ambassador payment outside the salary cap). It all depends on Hogan’s mindset and his wish to go home but I wouldn’t rule it out.

In their flights of fancy, Freo over the past weeks (months, years) have coveted, swooned and tantalised themselves to embarrassing levels over Hogan and thereby, in their fumbling stupidity they have mocked, devalued and largely insulted Jesse and the MFC's regard for this young footballer to extraordinary lengths and degrees of severity.

Walking with two twisted left feet into a very pedestrian attempt of doing a sweet bubblegum 'deal' with Jesse firstly - and secondly, the MFC - the big world outside of their tiny levels of intelligence has been polite, caring and now, was forced for the sake of football itself to ignore them as a precursor to their immediate clout within the AFL across the next few years. So glad that they failed in their juvenile thinking and limited application. So, go Jesse - kick 100 goals in 2019 with the Dees on a long-term contract across your footballing generation.

As for Freo, grow up!

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
