I feel as though J. Smith in against the Eagles would suit the match ups a lot more.

Can play tall and small and their forward line is lethal. Will allow us to either play Fristch on the wing or the extra man in defence, with Smith being accountable for someone.ย

For me:

Out: Tyson

In: J.Smithย

I'm not against this, but would like specifics.ย  Who is matching up on who?ย

And yes, we will win a lot of footy and put a great deal of pressure on McGovern, Hurn and Barrass...

Needless to say, I'm confident.

But the footy gods don't care about what the team looks like on paper; names don't win footy, effort does.

ย

My concern is that we have spent a lot of petrol tickets over the last month.ย  We saw on Friday night some signs that we might be tailing off a touch.ย  Our game is energy depleting.

Head says we will really struggle against a freshened up Eagles in the sunshine away.

Heart says we dig extra deep and get it done.

Massive, massive ask.

I tend to agree

But with Eddie McGuire's 8 day break and a bit of momentum, anything's possible

Agree with this. Smith's ability to cover a Darling, or one of their quick smalls will be more valuable than Tyson's extra midfield skills but has one paced foot speed.

Think Smith's athleticism will be invaluable. Weagles like to play fast and are pretty good at isolating one on ones.ย

Hopefully we can also run and carry rebound through the likes of Frosty, Hibbard and Smith.ย

Last weagles game had a fair bit of ping pong.

Oscar - Vardy/Lycett
Frost - Josh Kennedy
Smith/Hibberd/Jetta - Darling, Ryan, Rioli

Salem/Lewis - Le Cras, Cripps

Oscar and Frost will take the talls. Salem and Lewis will play up the ground. Jetta and Hibberd take the match ups in between, with Jetta staying closer to goal. Fritsch has been doing a little bit of everything in between but they've tried to keep him up the ground so he's not tested one on one deep. Smith would give the backline more flexibility and free Hibberd up.

The question is what price is that worth when Smithย won't give rebound or skill and will probably turn it over at some stage? Fritsch wasn't perfect with the ball either on Friday. And if he plays wing he's got more pace and skill than Tyson but isn't as strong at the contest. But he can also go forward instead of Vanders who can stay wing. It's all very hard to compute.

Just as I did last week I think Smith is the logical man in to a 23 man squad and there's no one else really in contention. Tyson, possibly Vanders (but I think his defensive work rate was strong) and Fritsch the only 3 to consider if they miss out.

Warming up over here this week... forecast for Saturday is currently 27c.

Good pick up.

I didn't see this at the game but on the replay saw it happen with 10 min left in the third, and Daisy subsequently mentions it on the broadcast.

We'll need to monitor this one. If Salem's out that is a position we don't have great cover for at Casey (Vince can play half-back but his run and kicking is nothing like Salem's, whilst Hunt's form just isn't good enough to warrant getting back in the side, and J Smith is too slow and tall for that sp๏ปฟot).ย

J Smith slow? About as quick as anyone on the list. He'd come in and Hibberd and Fritsch would be pushed in to more attacking roles. But praying Salem is ok. He's had some tightness in what looked like a groin to me over the last few weeks.

No change!!!! Don't trust J smith, did not play that well at Casey very average, for anyone to come in they have to be in better form then who goes out, and I don't see j smith in better form. I bet most that want Tyson out just are copy and paste posters, unless Dom did not play his role he stays in.

AFL looking even stupider for not putting the game on Friday night.

DOnt care where Richmond finished, they play in Melbourne with zero travel which is reward enough. Meanwhile one of West Coast or Melbourne will have to return from Perth to play in the Granny with one less day break than the Tigers.

Zero common sense again from Gil and his band of merry morons.

Would have loved Hunt to turn it on and come under consideration, but he didnโ€™t. I just think we need some run and carry at Optus.ย

Most likely no change though.ย

Everyone calling for no change please put forward who is playing on Kennedy, Vardy and Darling. It is clear to me watching the VFL today that Joel Smith plays. Offers so much versatility against the Eagles front 6 and is hard and fast. Tyson the unlucky player to miss as this will shuffle Fritsch up to the wing.

ย I couldn't go to the semi and had to watch on TV which is very limiting.ย  Who was on Gunston BRFE?ย  It's a bit similar and he did get away so we may be looking to change that up.

I feel like its 1 minute before the bounce I am so excited/nervous. This is going to be a very long 6 days. Unfortunately my head says we will go down this week. Still so bloody proud of these boysย

He played out the game. No chance he would have come back on if there was any doubt about his hammy given his history with them.ย

We are totally screwed if he misses. Has been excellent the last 2 weeks.ย

Fritsch had him early. Hibberd then had him late. My simple view is Smith is taller, faster and stronger than Fritsch. Fritsch is a better outside runner and link man than Tyson on a wing. Tyson was not poor but nor did he do enough to cement a place. Its a better set up against a better team.

I completely agree with this change. Smith was good at Casey under pressure and itโ€™s some awful conditions. A dry warm day will suit his skills even better. He isnโ€™t a world beater but he helps us have some extra speed both off half back and by allowing Fritsch to play up the ground.ย

Tyson on a wing is not an experiment that has worked. We already give up pace when Jones plays wing. We need some more leg speed against WC who love to run forward of the ball and give their gun forwards first use of the footy.ย

Shocking post. They should do a miniature Charlie Spargo doll you can clip on your key ring for good luck. I would buy a half dozen of them.

Hehe, doenโ€™t need to be miniature, could be life sized! :)

Re Salem, I watched the replay again and Daisey Pearce pointed out that Salem felt for his hammy or groinย when going back for a ball in the third I think but he played out the game. Fingers crossed.ย

So if Collingwood win or if GWS had have gotten through too the GF they would have the same reward.

Is that fair 'PaulRB'?

How about WC who finished 2nd having to play Collingwood who finished 3rd.

Do Collingwood deserve the reward?

The AFL's reasoning in a nonsense.

I would think the AFL should be more interested in showcasing the GF and in that case should be looking at putting on the best possible game...not giving a team theย advantage.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

Hands up if you thought, like me, at half-time in yesterdayโ€™s game at TIO Traeger Park, Alice Springs that Melbourneโ€™s disposal around the ground and, in particular, its kicking inaccuracy in front of the goals couldnโ€™t get any worse. Well, it did. And whatโ€™s even more damning for the Melbourne Football Club is that the game against St Kilda and its resurgence from the bottomless pit of its miserable start to the season wasnโ€™t just lost through poor conversion for goal but rather in the 15 minutes when the entire team went into a slumber and was mugged by the out-of-form Saints. Their six goals two behinds (one goal less than the Demons managed for the whole game) weaved a path of destruction from which they were unable to recover. Ross Lyonโ€™s astute use of pressure to contain the situation once they had asserted their grip on the game, and Melbourneโ€™s self-destructive wastefulness, assured that outcome. The old adage about the insanity of repeatedly doing something and expecting a different result, was out there. Two years ago, the score line in Melbourneโ€™s loss to the Giants at this same ground was 5 goals 15 behinds - a ratio of one goal per four scoring shots - was perfectly replicated with yesterdayโ€™s 7 goals 21 behinds.ย
This has been going on for a while and opens up a number of questions. Iโ€™ll put forward a few that come to mind from this performance. The obvious first question is whether the club can find a suitable coach to instruct players on proper kicking techniques or is this a skill that can no longer be developed at this stage of the development of our playing group? Another concern is the team's ability to counter an opponent's dominance during a run on as exemplified by the Saints in the first quarter. Did the Demons underestimate their opponents, considering St Kilda's goals during this period were scored by relatively unknown forwards?ย Furthermore, given the modest attendance of 6,721 at TIO Traeger Park and the team's poor past performances at this venue, is it prudent to prioritize financial gain over potentially sacrificing valuable premiership points by relinquishing home ground advantage, notwithstanding the cultural significance of the team's connection to the Red Centre?ย
