They won the free kick count 18-14

Close to that after quarter time:  15 - 8.

WCE supporters reaction to the umpiring is entirely reasonable.  If you are used to getting twice as many frees as the opponents, then on the rare occasion when it doesn't happen it is clear that brown paper bags have been exchanged.

Almost double after quarter time - the umpires did their bit to overcome Darling being off...

Terrific mate! How good. I had a mate over there yesterday who got refused boarding of his flight hahaha. had to spend an extra night. Said it was one big affternon party!

I really liked in the last q after our second last or last goal and they showed our coaches box... you could see a great reflection in the window and the fans below and it was so nice to see Eagles fans leaving early!!! Suck it you cashed up, fifo, jet ski owning, Ute driving boguns!!!

Also the MFC just emailed me/members 2 free tickets to the game on Sunday, not sure I can make it with 2 young uns at that time. Happy to give to someone else if I don’t go.. :)

The best part for me was when the weagles got in front in the last and we didn’t falter we actually steeled ourselves which I hadn’t seen before and won.

That is what impressed me most.

Great Win, one player who impressed me from the Eagles was Dom Sheed, would he be worth a look at years end.

Must admit when Elliot Yeo took that mark I thought we were done, but to the sides credit we stuck in there and over ran them.  Really surprised late in the last quarter that Melksham and Hannan were able with ease to get out the back.

Well put Cards, beautifully spoken....oh and a big shout out to Essendon for Milkshake and Hibberd. Thanks Dons, youve really contributed a hell of a lot to our team and season at much sacrifice to yourselves......have a great holiday.

Where is ‘ All The Goals Video’? The AFL highlights shows as many WCE goals as they do ours....PFFFT!

Won’t be getting much work done today.

I hope that the pathetic rubbish and constant booing that WCE supporters go on with about the umpiring brings a little introspection on here about our own pathetic recent bias in regard to the umpiring decisions and our game outcomes.

It's not like we're angels here. MFCSS in regard to umpiring is alive and well.

No team's supporters are unbiased about umpiring, not specific to us. But moaning after a match about the umpiring influencing games is completely different  from 50000 people booing umpires continually during a match where they were getting almost twice as many frees after Q1 as their opponent.

Where you at @Ethan Tremblay and @McQueen?

What a day!

I've been wanting to post my thoughts for a while but yesterday I was too inebriated and this morning I'm hungover and have had to chuck a work sickie.

I was fortunate to jag a last minute corporate gig for the WCE so it was on for young and old with free graze and froffs and sensational seating. Pity I was surrounded by the biggest bunch of sooking floggers you've ever come across.

I posted in the game day thread that a fast start was the key and I was delighted to see it come to fruition even though the Eagles hit back with a couple of late goals. The stadium was eerily silent after every goal we slotted and it was glorious. Their supporters are feral like you wouldn't believe and I'm sure guys like yourself and others who were there to witness it would agree. They boo at everything that goes against them even when it's an obvious infringement. I actually thought it was one of the better performances from the maggots that I've seen this season except for the howler against VDB that game a goal to Cripps.

Anyway, the game was excellent. It was very reassuring to see the Weed get amongst it and based on yesterday's performance I think he'll make it.

James Harmes is fast becoming a fave. Just an all round great game to continue his rise from the rookie list.

Gawn - just give him the Brownlow.

VDB - great to see some mongrel back in the team but I think he'll be in hot water for the elbow on Rioli. We missed his and Hibberd's attack on the footy so badly.

Brayshaw continues to look more comfortable and making better decisions.

The intensity was awesome to watch live. It's a different feeling at the game and our pressure on the opposition was very pleasing to see and the umps found just the right balance in adjudicating those instances.

It was just a superb day. I could go on and on but it'd get to tldr stage.

Trust you fully enjoyed the trip and bet you'd like to take some of this Perth weather home with you.

Cheers RD....can’t wait either. I’ve been watching Kent’s goal over and over this morning. The most crucial kick for goal in recent times for the MFC and he nailed it from 50. The kick went 60 and landed in the Demon Army. Beautiful stuff!!

Do you read Demonland after a match? Or even before it when people here try to pre-empt the "poor" umpiring they're expecting to get? None of it is "during a match".

The world stopped for a split second when he was lining up. Was like a life flashing before your eyes moment!

That image is burned in my head for good!

I don't understand your point.  To put my point more starkly: Any moaning about umpiring here before, during or after a match is completely different than the shameless mindless booing of every decision that WCE supporters did on Sunday.  And also ridiculous given the actual free count.

Well we weren't wrong were we? 15 to 8 after the 1st qtr.......

My favourite moment (apart from winning) was at the final siren when the cameras were on Jones and the pure joy and elation on his face was amazing to see.

If the Demonland mods could somehow put that part on here for all to see I think everyone would enjoy seeing it.

Memories never forgotten

Kick Ass

Awesome day at the footy for me as well. Was sat with my two kids in the Melbourne allotment, middle tier forward pocket at the end we attacked in the first quarter and what a start they gave us. Harmesey best on for mine by a mile, has really taken his game to a new level. Thought we got a really good run of it from the umps and viewing the replay has only confirmed what I suspected watching it live. Of course the overwhelming booing and complaining Eagles crowd made it feel even more so that we had gotten away with murder.

What a fantastic stadium to watch footy at I must say. Atmosphere in that last quarter was electric, can't believe they fought back to win after going behind. Real character building stuff. To be honest I was quite confident that we'd go alright before the game, and only really panicked for about five minutes in the last quarter. We need to do something about our defence though, God we get sliced open so easily from the back 50.

Highlight of the day was the passage of play that lead to Kents mark and set shot. Harmesey the architect, what a star. When he  kicked truly, the supporters around us all looking at each other in disbelief saying "we're going to play finals!"

To top off the day, Jonesy handed my son a footy at the end of the match and we proceeded to wander around the concourse high fiving other random Demons fans.

Go you redlegs!!!

  • PREVIEW: Brisbane

And just like that, we’re Narrm again. Even though the annual AFL Sir Doug Nicholls Round which commemorates the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture to our game has been a welcome addition to our calendar for ten years, more lately it has been a portent of tough times ahead for we beleaguered Narrm supporters. Ever since the club broke through for its historic 2021 premiership, this has become a troubling time of the year for the club. For example, it all began when Melbourne rebranded itself as Narrm across the two rounds of the Sir Doug Nicholls Round to become the first club to adopt an Indigenous club name especially for the occasion. It won its first outing under the brand against lowly North Melbourne to go to 10 wins and no losses but not without a struggle or a major injury to  star winger Ed Langdon who broke his ribs and missed several weeks. In the following week, still as Narrm, the team’s 17 game winning streak came to an end at the hands of the Dockers. That came along with more injuries, a plague that remained with them for the remainder of the season until, beset by injuries, the Dees were eliminated from the finals in straight sets. It was even worse last year, when Narrm inexplicably lowered its colours in Perth to the Waalit Marawar Eagles. Oh, the shame of it all! At least this year, if there is a corner to turn around, it has to be in the direction of something better. To that end, I produced a special pre-game chant in the local Narrm language - “nam mi:wi winnamun katjil prolin ambi ngamar thamelin amb” which roughly translated is “every heart beats true for the red and the blue.” >y belief is that if all of the Narrm faithful recite it long enough, then it might prove to be the only way to beat the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba on Sunday. The Lions are coming off a disappointing draw at Marvel Stadium against a North Melbourne team that lacks the ability and know how to win games (except when playing Melbourne). Brisbane are, however, a different kettle of fish at home and have very few positional weaknesses. They are a midfield powerhouse, strong in defence and have plenty of forward options, particularly their small and medium sized players, to kick a winning score this week after the sting of last week’s below par performance.

There was a time during the current Melbourne cycle that goes back to before the premiership when the club was the toughest to beat in the fourth quarter. The Demons were not only hard to beat at any time but it was virtually impossible to get the better them when scores were close at three quarter time. It was only three or four years ago but they were fit, strong and resilient in body and mind. Sadly, those days are over. This has been the case since the club fell off its pedestal about 12 months ago after it beat Geelong and then lost to Carlton. In both instances, Melbourne put together strong, stirring final quarters, one that resulted in victory, the other, in defeat. Since then, the drop off has been dramatic to the point where it can neither pull off victory in close matches, nor can it even go down in defeat  gallantly.

  • CASEY: Footscray

At twenty-four minutes into the third term of the game between the Casey Demons and Footscray VFL at Whitten Oval, the visitors were coasting. They were winning all over the ground, had the ascendancy in the ruck battles and held a 26 point lead on a day perfect for football. What could go wrong? Everything. The Bulldogs moved into overdrive in the last five minutes of the term and booted three straight goals to reduce the margin to a highly retrievable eight points at the last break. Bouyed by that effort, their confidence was on a high level during the interval and they ran all over the despondent Demons and kicked another five goals to lead by a comfortable margin of four goals deep into the final term before Paddy Cross kicked a couple of too late goals for a despondent Casey. A testament to their lack of pressure in the latter stages of the game was the fact that Footscray’s last ten scoring shots were nine goals and one rushed behind. Things might have been different for the Demons who went into the game after last week’s bye with 12 AFL listed players. Blake Howes was held over for the AFL game but two others, Jack Billings and Taj Woewodin (not officially listed as injured) were also missing and they could have been handy at the end. Another mystery of the current VFL system.

The Demons head back out on the road in Round 10 when they travel to Queensland to take on the reigning Premiers and the top of the table Lions who look very formidable. Can the Dees cause a massive upset? Who comes in and who goes out?

Wayward kicking for goal, dump kicks inside 50 and some baffling umpiring all contributed to the Dees not getting out to an an early lead that may have impacted the result. At the end of the day the Demons were just not good enough and let the Hawks run away with their first win against the Demons in 7 years.
