It is entirely 100% in our hands as to where we finish - even second, with double chance and home finals is possible .... in fact WILL happen if we win all our games.

So ...no excuses.

Every season is in our hands, we should win 22 each year?

i sense you are more of an optimist than me. We have two of the toughest games possible coming up and off our form this year we won’t win them. So we need to win the next two and squeeze on in 13.

Better this week than next.

Let’s hope it doesn’t kick them into gear for next week. Sick of swans hawks cats!

If we want to win a flag this year, the Sydney win was the perfect result for us.
If we just want to Bradbury our way to an extra footy game this year, well then bad luck.

Bradbury plan is flawed because it's in our hands anyway. We need to win the two games. Win then and we're home. Our percentage takes care of the rest. We can't Bradbury it through.

What a great day. Bummers lose and the pies lose both by tiny margins.

Ok melbourne team no pressure but if you can handle it tomorrow we can be in 3rd spot.

Wow AFL I don't think we need zones and 6 on 6 and all that crap. This round has been great. Footy will fix itself.

Just wondering...when was the last time Melbourne played Collingwood in a final?........i just have this feeling.

Top 4 is well and truly open now.

Tell you what if we can win this week & next our last two rounds will be epic games. Bigger than 8 point games if that's even possible

Well they honed their ' skills ' with a good win against Gold Coast so they're in form. !!!

Bradbury didn't fall over, which is what we'd be doing if we were to lose all our games.

Win 1 v Gold Coast and find 1 more somewhere (Sydney next week…equivalent to keeping out skates on the ice), and we're in barring some ridiculous set of mathematical permutations. That's the Bradbury route in my mind.

Well it's in our hands now win and we are 4th. GO THE MIGHTY DEES!

Wow.....thanks SWYL, that was a lifetime ago.

Happy to have the swans find some form, much better to play some tough games heading into the finals, test ourselves, win all (or all but 1) and we will have a good ladder position and more importantly a lot of confidence going into the finals

Geez I hope we upset the trend hand out 100 pointer.

How can you Bradbury your way to a flag?

Looking at Hawthorn in 3rd spot makes me ill.....how the hell?

That was so long ago I’ve forgotten that game. I was probably there.

Think it’s 70 years since Melbourne played Tigers in a final. Maybe Bluey Truscott’s last game.

I thought Buddy heroics aside Sydney were still pretty bad, their midfield is ordinary at the moment

  • REPORT: Port Adelaide

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.

The Demons have the Bye next week but then are on the road once again when they come up against the Gold Coast Suns on the Gold Coast in what could be a last ditch effort to salvage their season. Who comes in and who comes out?

  • POSTGAME: Port Adelaide

The Demons simply did not take their opportunities when they presented themselves and ultimately when down by 25 points effectively ending their finals chances. Goal kicking practice during the Bye?
