Casey Demons v Northern Blues - Round 18

KC from Casey

Recommended Posts

Just a note on Harley Balic who retired this week.

Harley played his best game for Casey in Round 1 against Coburg when he starred with six goals, a performance which could have gained him a promotion to the AFL. However, it's worth remembering that was the week when Tom Bugg (4) and Dean Kent (3) got among the goals in Melbourne's win against North Melbourne leaving no place available for Balic in the team.

From there however, it was a bit of a downhill ride for Harley.

He was injured late in the second game against Werribee after kicking an important last quarter goal just when Casey was asserting its authority on the game. He missed the next two matches with a plantar fascia injury and returned in Round 6 against the Box Hill Hawks. He put in one or two handy performances including a 3 goal effort against Port Melbourne but more lately seemed to have some quiet patches, flashing in and out of games. Some of his last appearances for the club were played in some shocking conditions against Essendon and North Melbourne (who were kept goalless). He certainly never came near to emulating his debut display and his non-selection against Footscray was a bit of a mystery. He played against the Cats but was nowhere near his best.

I suppose that the writing was on the wall and the tale of his more recent vanilla performances has now been resolved. If his heart wasn’t in it and he has lost his passion for the game, then he is doing what his right for his club, his teammates and most importantly, for himself. I wish him good luck for the future.

On a side note, because Balic missed out on playing in Rounds 3 and 4 through his foot injury, every time he ran out to play with Casey, it was a winning game.

Huge game this one. Not for the season or anything but coming into the back end of the year there’s a few boys that’ll need to play some great footy if they don’t want to find themselves traded or delisted at the end of the season.

Hopefully Keilty did what he did against the Blues this time last year and has 10+ intercept marks.

Has your bother played for the MFC yet?

Not long to go for the start of today's game at Casey Fields. There's a bit of a northerly wind blowing down the ground which often affects games down here at this time of the year. It certainly had an influence on the VFLW curtain raiser between Casey and Carlton in which the Demons prevailed by 10 points scoring 5.7.37 to 3.9.27. They won the toss and had first use of the wind and kicked three goals in the first six minutes.

I believe that Dean Kent has been held back as emergency for tomorrow and will be sit this game out.

    REDLEG PRIDE by Meggs

Hump day mid-week footy at the Redlegs home ground is a great opportunity to build on our recent improved competitiveness playing in the red and blue.   The jumper has a few other colours this week with the rainbow Pride flag flying this round to celebrate people from all walks of life coming together, being accepted. AFLW has been a benchmark when it comes to inclusivity and a safe workplace.  The team will run out in a specially designed guernsey for this game and also the following week

    REDEEMING by Meggs

It was such a balmy spring evening for this mid-week BNCA Pink Lady match at our favourite venue Ikon Park between two teams that had not won a game since round one.   After last week’s insipid bombing, the DeeArmy banner correctly deemanded that our players ‘go in hard, go in strong, go in fighting’, and girl they sure did!   The first quarter goals by Alyssa Bannan and Alyssia Pisano were simply stunning, and it was 4 goals to nil by half-time.   Kudos to Mick Stinear.

    REDEEM by Meggs

How will Mick Stinear and his dwindling list of fit and available Demons respond to last week’s 65-point capitulation to the Bombers, the team’s biggest loss in history?   As a minimum he will expect genuine effort from all of his players when Melbourne takes on the GWS Giants at Ikon Park this Thursday.  Happily, the ground remains a favourite Melbourne venue of players and spectators alike and will provide an opportunity for the Demons to redeem themselves. EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm
