Can someone please tell me why these rules changes would not be trialled for a year or more in the lower leagues around australia?? to put them straight into the AFL is ridiculous and they are toying with the great game!

the first thing the committee should do is review all the rules changes made in the past 10 years and analyse their impact. The sliding/on the ground rule is a farce based off one injury to Rohan. the protected area rule is just ludicrous. also if incorrect disposal for example is no longer a rule then remove it or start to officiate it!

then agree on the rules, tighten up the wording and room for misinterpretation in the rules. hire 30 full time umpires including at least 30% past players at VFL level or higher and train them to be consistent. pay them properly and rate their performance with consquences for poor performance

I have never understood he AFL’s motive for a rule change that they have brought in. The slide, 3rd man up, protected zone, 30 second shot clock. At best all I can remember is some murmuring about these things and they just decided to pull the trigger. We have so many stupid rules now that we can’t even officiate the ones we had in the first place properly.

There’s a rule that’s been around for 120+ years. It’s called HOLDING THE BALL and if it occasionally got paid we might have a more free flowing game. 6-6-6 isn’t going to do anything.

I love it how the AFL and some journos call for change saying the specticle isn’t great but we the fans seem to be screaming to leave the game alone. I understand ratings may be down and there’s a lot of ugly games but I’m just sick and tired of hearing of all this rubbish we need to do. Have zones, cap interchanges more and tire the players out, clear the centre square, shorten games, shorten seasons. No-one has any friggen idea what they are talking about.

Im willing to bet that should we make these changes in 3 years time we’ll be looking to make changes to the rules again.

The bottom line is to bring about a game that resembles AFL X but with commercials after every goal

It’s a bad spectacle because they umpire it terribly, nobody knows the rules, players are confused. Cut the stupid rules and umpire properly, no need for new rules

If we could just make the most of the rules that we have I’ve got full faith the game can become better again. The game goes through peaks and troughs and there has always been bad games in every era, even the 80s and 90s which is the era people love pointing to as the flawless product era.

Well I hate to burst everyone's bubble but Gil was on SEN this morning talking to Twately, and it turns out that everything's alright with the game, and there are no problems with anything. He batted away everything dear Gerry threw at him. What a relief.

So ... nominated ruckmen. Everyone knows the obvious answer except for the AFL.

Protected zone. They've [censored] it up completely with a poorly written rule and poor and inconsistent adjudication. Make it that the bloke with the ball, and the bloke on the mark, cannot be interfered with. That was always the intent anyway.

6/6/6 will only ensure that the huge packs can't form for another 5 to 10 seconds. Whoopdy doo. Another brilliant non-solution brought to you by Your AFL.

18m goal square. They cannot be serious. What next, sand traps like in golf? What f*ckin problem does this address? Stupid rule as a non-fix, creating extra decision making for umps, meaning more bad decisions. An AFL speciality, which means it's a given for next year.

Rule changes in season, the only comp of any sport in the world that could consider this is the AFL. What contempt they hold us in. They're telling clubs like Bris, GC, Dogs, etc: "your games don't matter. Who gives a [censored] if you lose one because of our screwing with the rules. Apart from your fans, your sponsors, your recruiters, players who might want to transfer to you, etc. No one important."

Meanwhile the one glaring rule creating most of the problems, is the interchange. Conspicuously ignored by the brains trust which somehow includes coaches, those well known custodians of the game, and no fans.

Get rid of interchange! No more f*cking with the heart of the game. AFL have lost the plot.

Wait - isn't our whole game plan centred on a high zone and extra numbers coming off half back and streaming toward the contest? Not sure how even zones are going to benefit that - although some on here may be happy Goodwin will be forced to concede a structure we've been developing over the past two years.

Hhhmm has been running red flags for me and how far the AFL will go especially with our drafting focus of contested ball players. Of the drongos at HQ want to open the game up we could be left in the lurch.

Nailed it!

The Lunatics have definitely taken over.

These guys are killing this game.

Oh great just more rule changes to confuse both the players and supporters.

Nope, the sole purpose of the further changes is the continuous rights of  umpires to further interrupt the game for intended outcomes. $$$$$$$ at the turnstiles.

There is no hope of sense from the AFL.  Almost every new rule/interpretation has not been thought through which is why we are in this mess.

Even something as innocuous as the 30 second rule is going to be rorted or controversial  in an important match. Close to the siren in a close game someone kicking for goal other than Ben Brown will take 2 minutes to walk in from 100 metres away.  Ben Brown will be able to because that is his 'natural arc'.  Other players may or may not be called to play on at some random distance from the mark or for some walking speed deemed too slow.

The problem is that the rule says start moving toward goal within 30 seconds.  It should be kick the ball within say, 45 seconds.  Too bloody obvious for Gil and his mates.

Yep ... good post PSD although I'd allow only 10 rotations per team per game.

There is a great divide growing between the 'leave the game alone' people and the 'fix the sport' people but the bottom line is that those who want change are turning away from the game.

The conflict that might arise between both groups should be avoided because both groups need each other.  The sport is basically unique to Australia only so the AFL needs to be the clear premier sport of chouce ... but that top spot is under threat with TV viewers dropping off in decent numbers.

I am at least happy that the AFL is recognising that it has an issue.  How they deal with it all is an entirely different matter.

I have yet to come across anyone who doesn't like or want positional footy ... so to get to that position change will have to occur.

What the game needs is freedom !

Freedom from all these rule changes and tinkering done in the past number of years,,, that has lead it to all this carp.

Freedom from all the rotations.

Freedom from so much bending of rules.

Freedom from administrators wanting to stamp the game in their image.

Freedom from all the $$$ exploitation's.

Freedom from over sized EGO's in the commentary box's.

... and freedom from even more new rules and rule changes.

MY take is , remove the interchange numbers back to where they once were,,, and leave the game be.

# 2019_   3 man interchange bench and 1 Sub.

# 2020_   2 man interchange bench and 2 Subs.

Then let the game be itself,  2021+___

30 sec rule should be scrapped. if player with free kick is within range, umpire should set the mark and call time off. then time on is reset automatically when the player either plays on, kicks or handballs the ball.

If during this period of time off the umpire feels that the player is time wasting (for momentum reasons not clock reasons) he can warn him then call play on

it's not really that hard to solve a problem with a better solution that avoids a team exploiting a loop hole and pizzing off supporters

2 things I’d do to reduce congestion

Limit interchange to 10 per quarter

play holding the ball more

plus I’d remove 3rd man up rule and simply throw the ball up or in straight away, no pause at all

also I’d ban runners

That's exactly right Daisy.

I've been calling for just this for years now,,, since the time/clock wasting has been going on.

Its plain ridiculous that the clock keeps running down,.. while a player ties his shoelace or takes a quick power-nap.

.

They're clever bastards too.

Brought in the idea of trialling the rules this year.

Everyone will go off their [censored].

They'll say they've listened and won't run the trial.

Meanwhile they'll just bring in the changes anyway.

They're like a small boy with their penis.

They just can't leave it alone.

I hope we win a flag before the game is completely trashed into aflxcrement

Don't wait for the ball to come out of a pile of players, just ball it up quickly before they get there makes a lot of sense.

'm always annoyed when players just jump onto the tackled player and his tackler to create a ball up.  They often even tackle an oppo who is in the pile who doesn't have to ball.  Why is that not a free?

Haha, I've even been seeing players from the same team tackling each other also, can't remember the game last week now but the issues we now have are from the AFL bringing in stupid rules, I'm totally gobsmacked they can't see their own mistakes and want to bring in different rules, the problem is simple, Rohan has nailed it. Can't wait for the 25m goal square

Yeah, that annoys me as well. But at least it's not illegal.

These ideas of zones at the bounce are insane.  Words fail me.   The only rational conclusion is that the Russian soccer federation has the dirt on the current AFL management and are plotting the elimination of Aussie rules.  Where are ASIS/ASIO when you need them?

Not to mention 90% of those '3rd tackles' are directly into the back. So take your pick, holding the man, or push in the back. Nope, ball up, who's rucking, Bueller, anyone, anyone. Ok, Gaz or Paddy, umm, righto, Max and Paddy in the ruck. SSSSS, Free kick to my man Paddy, what do you mean you didn't know!

  • PREVIEW: Sydney

The two teams competing at the MCG on Sunday afternoon have each traversed a long and arduous path since their previous encounter on a sweltering March evening in Sydney a season and a half ago. Both experienced periods of success at various times last year. The Demons ran out of steam in midseason while the Swans went on to narrowly miss the ultimate prize in the sport. Now, they find themselves outside of finals contention as the season approaches the halfway mark. The winner this week will remain in contact with the leading pack, while the loser may well find itself on a precipice, staring into the abyss. The current season has presented numerous challenges for most clubs, particularly those positioned in the middle tier. The Essendon experience in suffering a significant 91-point loss to the Bulldogs, just one week after defeating the Swans, may not be typical, but it illustrates the unpredictability of outcomes under the league’s present set up.

  • REPORT: Brisbane

“Max Gawn has been the heart and soul of the Dees for years now, but this recent recovery from a terrible start has been driven by him. He was everywhere again, and with the game in the balance, he took several key marks to keep the ball in the Dees forward half.” - The Monday Knee Jerk Reaction: Round Ten Of course, it wasn’t the efforts of one man that caused this monumental upset, but rather the work of the coach and his assistants and the other 22 players who took the ground, notably the likes of Jake Melksham, Christian Petracca, Clayton Oliver and Kozzie Pickett but Max has been magnificent in taking ownership of his team and its welfare under the fire of a calamitous 0-5 start to the season. On Sunday, he provided the leadership that was needed to face up to the reigning premier and top of the ladder Brisbane Lions on their home turf and to prevail after a slow start, during which the hosts led by as much as 24 points in the second quarter. Titus O’Reily is normally comedic in his descriptions of the football but this time, he was being deadly serious. The Demons have come from a long way back and, although they still sit in the bottom third of the AFL pack, there’s a light at the end of the tunnel as they look to drive home the momentum inspired in the past four or five weeks by Max the Magnificent who was under such great pressure in those dark, early days of the season.

  • CASEY: Southport

The Southport Sharks came to Casey. They saw and they conquered a team with 16 AFL-listed players who, for the most part, wasted their time on the ground and failed to earn their keep. For the first half, the Sharks were kept in the game by the Demons’ poor use of the football, it’s disposal getting worse the closer the team got to its own goal and moreover, it got worse as the game progressed. Make no mistake, Casey was far and away the better team in the first half, it was winning the ruck duels through Tom Campbell’s solid performance but it was the scoreboard that told the story.
