Post Match Discussion - Round 14

I don't get the complaints about lack of effort. Clearly we had a RHG. Where we blew the game was where we often blow the game: efficiency going forward. Addressing our efficiency deficiency must be front and centre in the footy department's plans.

Last night was another Fail

over 60 forward entries for that score, including nothing in the last 30 minutes

Their was great effort at times, but no system at all, is that coaching??

Forward Line was an absolute shambles, Hogan’s mind was elsewhere.

Still none the wiser as to whether Goodwin can coach under pressure

Other clubs take opportunities, mostly when they are available, not the MFC. We baulk and pull back.

 Cycle is on repeat mode....

Couple of comments on reflection:

- I dont think we have got the right team yet. Needed Spargo or Garlett for some forward pressure.

- Fritsch is amazing and really look forward to him developing more.

- Viney was commendable.

- Umpiring was deplorable.

- Lever out is a bigger loss than we all think.

Compared to Queens birthday we were not disgraced yesterday. It took the first 3 games to get a cohesive style going. It just so happened to that we lost Lever just as we came up against top 8 teams.

Once Lever went down so did our top 4 chances. He is a massive out. That’s why we gave so much away to get him. We don’t have the player to cover for him. Hence I doubt we can kick those big scores now because we will leek goals out back. That is the reality. Look at West Coast without their 2 key forwards.

As supporters we need to deal with it. As the coaches have opportunities to learn other ways to win. Keep learning more opportunities. The positive is that we can adapt & practise new setups that we can use mid game later on

The TMac revelation occurred through adversity.  Go Dees!

Gosh remember just a few weeks ago we were sitting 2nd? Thankgod we have a good percentage but gee it would just be nice to keep in touch with the top 3 teams and get clear of the teams below us.

We could be 7th at the end of the round. We should win the next 3 though

This is the most insightful thing anybody has posted thus far.

Agree. We need a beast like franklin who can kick goals from 50-60m out. Weid might be a handy in.

i hope we retrain for this variation

There is no g'tee of that unless we fix some major flaws and some players, who currently aren't contributing, lift their rating substantially.

If the above doesn't happen we could well be out of the 8 after those three rounds.

Not sure if Weid is  answer.  At least the t.smith pedo issue  is solved. Its not them either.

We have been relying on hogan to take marks in the middle but he  was pants again.

We had a  great crack but too many not trying.

Umps 10 frees in row certainly played a part. Sad.

It was 'fair' but this is why I hate the MRP.

He went past the ball to bump and made a bloke cough up blood - why is the MRP focussed on impact, not intention?

If he hit him in the head he'd have got 4 weeks, with the same intent to hurt someone.

Didn't that used to be called 'a shirtfront'?

Garlett and Spargo need to play

We must not bomb it into 50 ever again

How did we lose that?

Port are shite and we just gave it to them with poor forward 50 entries

No point blaming the umpires that's what children do..........oh yes its demonland

Fact remains if we play like that week in week out and clean up our forward 50 entries we'll win a Premiership soon enough

Great game to watch

That had to be the most frustrating game to watch this year, we completely dominated them for the first half for almost no reward, you have to commend port on defending so well while under siege, I now have a new respect for them after that game. I suspect they and other teams have been doing home work on our game plan and it will only get harder from here, if we don’t have some other tricks up our sleeve and adjust it will continue to be frustrating for us to watch.

Great to know that umpires Curtis Deboy and Sam Hay are born and bred South Aussies. How does that work? As for Matthew Nichols, he's every Hawthorn supporter's wet dream but was the ump who told Max off when he punched the ball away a while back.

Max has tweeted this morning that at least we didn’t “trash the brand” as we have done in the past. Wow, that is such a relief. I can get on with life, snap out of my anger and depression about last night and thoroughly enjoy the rest of the weekend knowing that our “brand” is secure. I absolutely love Max, but fair dinkum.......

Yeah very good MAX Problem is Brand is almost trashed beyond repair given the inability of the current playing personel to actually win games against good teams. Not just those from Muppetland!!

Lewis and Vince cant play in the same team anymore.

Agree - we saw signs of it last season, and now the instances of them being caught out for being too slow are happening with more frequency.

AFL.com.au has taken a look at what must change for Melbourne, which has an extremely tough draw to finish the season, to become legitimate top-four contenders.

Hi Ben ??

Jeez, all his points are all the exact same I’ve raised, funny that.

Might some of the problem be a fixation upon the brand ... In lieu of the Scoreboard ??

Its nice to enjoy the journey but its really the destination I'm more focused on...a Premiership

Win ugly..win scrappy..win lucky...just win. Im not fussed what 'brand' is employed.

In the real world its success that builds a brand...not a brand... success.

Brands are results...not tools per se.

Well, McDonald did play forward as a junior.

As mentioned, I dont think the team is quite right. Wouldnt mind Goodwin playing around with a few options - particularly with an easier run coming.

If bombing it in isnt working, possibly a smaller forward set up, with Hogan playing more in the middle.

We certaintly have stock in that department.

The problem with trying it against lower placed teams is it doesn't prove much against class. He bashed lesser teams up and then goes to water when the pressure is on

Not sure why Garlett isn't playing as wee needed he's speed & silky skills....

29 more inside 50s & still lost, positive is if we improve on our conversion we will certainly win a lot more games!

  • PREVIEW: Collingwood

Way back in March we contemplated the possibility of a Demon resurgence after Simon Goodwin’s summer of love. Many issues at the club had seemingly been addressed, key players were returning from injury and a brand new day was about to dawn. We imagined the coach pulling a rabbit out of a hat. The team would roar up the charts, push aside every opponent and make its way to a Grand Final ending in ultimate triumph with Goody and Max holding the premiership cup aloft under a shower of red and blue ticker tape.

  • AFLW REPORT: Western Bulldogs

We’re back! That was fun. The Mighty Dees’ Season 10 campaign is off toa flying start with a commanding 48-point winover the Western Bulldogs, retaining the Hampson-Hardeman Cup in style. After a hard-fought first half in slippery conditions, the Dees came out in the second half and showcased their trademark superior class, piling on four goals in the third termand never looked back.

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

The final score in Saturday's game against Hawthorn was almost identical to that from their last contest three months ago. Melbourne suffered comprehensive defeats in both games, but the similarities ended there. When they met in Round 9, the Demons were resurgent, seeking to redeem themselves after a lacklustre start to the season. They approached the game with vigour and dynamism, and were highly competitive for the first three quarters, during which they were at least on par with the Hawks. In the final term, they lapsed into error and were ultimately overrun, but the final result did not accurately reflect their effort and commitment throughout the match.

  • CASEY: Box Hill

The Casey Demons ended the regular season on a positive note and gained substantial momentum leading into the finals when they knocked the Box Hill Hawks off the top of the VFL ladder in their final round clash at Casey Fields. More importantly, they moved out of a wild card position in the finals race and secured a week's rest as they leapfrogged up the ladder into fifth place with their decisive 23-point victory over the team that had been the dominant force in the competition for most of the season.
