De Goey isn't going anywhere, that is my point. The Pies will give him a fat contract and he will stay.

If we want to get anywhere we cannot just assume.  We have to have a crack.

None of us, not even you Red, know what the future holds, and how things will pan out.  So we just go into things with a bullish attitude, and do our best.   see what comes out of it.

At the least, we might push up his contract price for the pies to pay.  That inturn, may shake another free ?

But we have to be in it, to win it.  The worries about loss of face, are just that, nothing, but worries.

Vince

Vince, Lewis and Jones are more than enough and Pedersen won't be around next year.

We can't be crazy enough to add a injury prone veteran to that list.

The only way Murphy would be shipped off by carlton as  a FA is to get compensation picks. Whilst no-one knows the exact formula, a lot is related to the size of the contract. To gain high draft pick compo Murphy would have to get a fat pay check  and long contract, which at his age is not going to happen. Spend our money on Jetta, Gus, Harmes & Oscar and go after a RFA aroung 26 years of age.

And what's more ... a veteran of what? Repeated thumpings year in year out?

Vince and Lewis were the kind of veterans we needed then. What does Murphy give us that we lack?

We would be far better off with an elderly Swan Cat or Hawk if we are needing an injection of experience.

that's good. (that was a quip referring to the pies, or crows, not to the doubters)

You know I would swap Angus and Neale from Freo,  IF we could make that workout.  and still take Sloane as well.

Embarrassing myself on here, what with all the competition?

Please, add to the topic

Gaff No, Murphy No

Whilst we all hold different opinions on it, I'd be hard pressed to be convinced that Gaff is someone we shouldn't be looking at it.  He's got the perfect mix of inside and outside footy and is a large reason why the Eagles are on top of the ladder.  He would complement our midfield perfectly.

at the right price , which will be low m we would have to consider him. Carlton will be happy to ship him for end of 1st round pick  which Im sure like us will be asking what is needed to get that,  just like we did with Frawley.

its more about back up and what leadership he can give us, we are still a young side and with Vince and maybe Lewis on last year he might just be worth a look

I'm not sure why people think that Gaff is a good fit for us. He is an outside accumulator yes but he is very one-paced and known to be poor defensively. Exactly what we don't need. The guys we need are guys that are quick and defensive minded. Guys like castagna etc.

You must be kidding, he is better than that!! I spose Billy Stretch is the answer then??

Unbelievable !!

We haven't seen Billy Stretch's worth, yet.  but he's building, pf.

Carlton owe us - and big time. They got Ron Barassi, Greg Wells & Earl Spalding . We got Vin Catoggio and a couple of 'could be's' who quickly showed they were 'won't be's'.

We don't need broken down 29 year olds.

Aim high - we're a club of destination - chase the big names who are in their prime.

We have Spargo, the new and improved Murphy 2.0, with 10+ years as a Dee ahead of him. Why bother with 30 year old 1.0 version?

Other than marking in a pack, Spargo certainly has the goods in nearly every regard.

Consistency of playing in the ones in running, balking and evasive roles  is just what Stretch needs. His dad was quiet for a while, early, then became a champion. Once settled, Stretch may develop all of the skills like his dad, particularly intercept marks, goal scoring from a distance on the run, chase-down ball winning from opponents, fast and clean hands. Run and carry is something he already has and he is not intimidated by opponents' aggression.

The inside has only appeared this season, and against Sydney he went missing again on the tough stuff

You'd think Murphy would play very well in a good side and he could be managed more conservatively to peak at the right time. My concern is what role does he play?

High half forward? I fancy Jones to move in to that role (not back) and compete with ANB and Spargo.

Wouldn't be sold on him playing wing, not sure his body is up to running the kms. So maybe midfield with stints forward? He'd give us more skill and good burst speed in the middle but I'm still keen on getting more a more games for Oliver, Viney, Braysh, Petracca through the guts.

I don't mind the idea of a veteran but I'd prefer a pure winger, a key defender or half back or legit small forward.

I'd have him playing half forward over ANB any day for a couple of years.

I imagine Vince will finish up at the end of this year with Lewis finishing the year after.

The talk of him being injury prone is a bit of a furfy. This year he's had plantar fascitis and can't take a trick. Last year he was very good.

I think some supporters on here still underestimate the importance of having senior players around to continue to teach and lead our young group. Murphy is the same age as Jones and if he was to replace Vince as another senior member, I'd be all for it.

Adds skill, composure and class which are three things we're dying for.

And the year before that he was restricted to 10 games, and has played just the 4 this year.  Otherwise he has generally been pretty good in terms of games played, but his body is not as durable as it once was.

True, worth the question I believe anyway. Will be interested to see how his body is toward the end of the season.

At another club that doesnt require him to play big minutes in the midfield would also help.

I wouldn't chase him but on a performance based contract we could do worse.

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

    INSANITY by Whispering Jack

Somehow, the Melbourne Football Club managed it twice in the course of a week. Coach Simon Goodwin admitted it in his press conference after the loss against the Brisbane Lions in a game where his team held a four goal lead in the third term:   "In reality we went a bit safe. Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well

    UNBACKABLE by The Oracle

They’re billing the Brisbane Lions as a sleeping giant — the best team outside the top eight —and based on their form this month they’re a definite contender for September AFL action. Which is not exactly the best of news if you happen to be Melbourne, the visiting team this week up at the Gabba.  Even though they are placed ahead of their opponent on the AFL table, and they managed to stave off defeat in their last round victory over North Melbourne, this week’s visitors to the Sunshi

    WILDCARDS by KC from Casey

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last
