Gary Pert was interviewed yesterday by Derwayne on SEN, in which he talked  merchandise, home base, team spirit etc, etc. an interesting and quite informative interview. Unfortunately I can’t locate it on the SEN web site as it’s worth hearing. Maybe someone can find it and provide a link.

    Basically as soon as they get one Covid case they shut the city down. And I mean lock people in their houses. 
    There was a big shut down of a big port in China a few weeks ago when a worker tested positive, that is still delaying containers arriving into Australia.

    And since the relationship between China and Australia has gone down the toilet, a lot of suppliers have upped their prices. Production is also slower as Australia is no longer a priority growth market. 
    Combine all that with the minuscule levels of stock the club is ordering (big scheme of things you got Kmart ordering 500,000 navy T-shirts and MFC ordering 5,000), and they’re always going to be up against it in terms of costs and turnaround times. 
     

    It's not just China. There's a shortage of manufacturing workers, raw product, and then shipping containers and even boats. To ship a container now cost 10-12 time what it did 12 months ago. Airfreight spot prices are through the roof. Anyone in any sort of supply chain is currently pulling their hair out. The club has done very well to pull anything together at all!

    I’ll admit I was wrong on him.

    I felt he was pushing a failed program of getting lapsed members back to the club when I felt that was a shrinking demographic. I also felt there was a touch of CS about him in his talking up of the club as bigger than it really was.

    He seems to have PJ’s approach (minimal but appears in the media when needed) with a slightly different set of priorities. He seems like the type of CEO who can take another executive’s good work and push it into the stratosphere. Plus, his ability to retain internationally renowned, top dollar sponsors has been magnificent (I believe he got Jaguar but PJ got Zurich). 

    Just deliver us a proper training and social base and you’ll be an MFC legend, Perty!

    He has done an excellent job.

    I don't know who arranged the whole squad to go to WA for the full 4+ weeks but it galvanised the team and the result was a premiership, whether he suggested it and the board approved it or otherwise and he implemented it, it worked well.

    This is the job of a CEO get ideas and get approval from all parties.

    When you sell $500,000+ MFC merchandise then you are doing something right so we should give the man the credit.

    I don't know how much of a role he's had bringing in Richo who then bought in Chocco but the proof is in the pudding when it comes to the footy department changes. I did have a few concerns it was getting a bit 90's Collingwood but the Yze and Stafford choices balanced it out.

    Obviously the facilities were a big part of why he was given the gig and things (slowly) seem to be progressing there.

    I still have some slight doubts about the aim to make us a big club. Collingwood are big but they are the McDonalds of the AFL. It's all junk. Richmond have managed to keep (and grow) connection between the club and the fans.

    Obviously the club needs to grow to keep up with the big boys and making some money from all the premiership merchandise is great. I don't think the aim should be to now take long suffering fans for a ride and jack up prices and so on purely because we'll pay for it now.

    that is the backbone 

    Pert wants to see 80,000 crowds at The MCG. That will only happen with sustained success. 
    I doubt the club will “jack” up the prices of everything, considering what we have all been through during the last 2 years. 
     

    I have always thought Pert was an excellent choice of CEO and i hope he stays there for a long stint.

    I also agree that Gary Pert as CEO of the Melbourne Football Club was a prudent choice.

    His 10 years of experience as CEO at Collingwood will pay off. He was there when the Magpies won the flag in 2010 and would know what it takes to help grow the Demons. 

    There will be ALOT of Melbourne supporters buying 2021 Premiership memorabilia! Especially during Christmas!

    I am going to purchase something for myself and something extra special for my Dad for Christmas to celebrate Melbourne's 57 year drought breaking Premiership.

    You have made some very large accusations. 
    i am sure Gary has spent a lot of time with the Players over the last 5 weeks 

    Did he steal your Girlfriend a few years ago?

    yep it's about 10k now to get a 40ft container from China.

    Not a complaint, more wanting to point this out: Trident memberships for 2022 have gone up by about 10%. Much more than CPI. Not "jacking up" but given the money now flowing in from our success (even before the GF victory), this is a sizable increase for loyal members that could've been lessened. Only a handful of games with crowds at the G this year, no ability to use GFG. Certainly not the club's fault at all, don't get me wrong, but could've been softened with minimal increase to 2022 dues.

    Basking in the JBF glow of a flag, some will have the view that any increase is fine. And that's ok. But not everyone has that money to spare at the moment.

    Small issue in the overall joy of our success, but important to note

    Very hard for a CEO to be truly successful at a football club without (sustained) onfield success.  Our performance this year gives Pert a real opportunity that our previous CEOs could only ever dream of - so far it looks as if he is making the msot of it.

    Strangely playing the finals in Perth might be a blessing in disguise

    Don’t you think the board would have moved him on already if that was the case? Business governance/management 101.

    Just stop. It’s embarrassing. Even more so when you go missing and refuse to elaborate thereafter.

    To take the full squad over to Perth with elite facilities 

    There has to be some Price Rises

    If you can’t afford Trident Membership next year, purchase a lower Membership 

    I have spent $800 each year for 15 years, the past 2 years I have seen nothing live. But i am glad my money helped pay the bills

    Can you please elaborate what our values are.

    I have met both Jackson and Pert numerous times and they are so different. Jackson was the perfect CEO for us at that time. The success we have now had was instigated by the changes that Jackson made and now Pert has supported those changes by bringing in a different ethos. He didn't play a part on the ground but what he has provided for the team was a secure and stable Club so that they could thrive. Pert pushed for 70,000 this year which I think with Covid it was always going to be difficult to achieve. The drop off in numbers of combined MCC/MFC members was unfortunate but one that probably should have been expected. We now have such an upside in increasing our membership base for 2022. The current Administration team work very hard and now with a topped up bank account they will be able to increase staffing levels. Pert has the contacts to improve our team Sponsorship and with Kate Roffey who is the ideal person to kick start the new facilities, our future looks very bright. 

    If and when Pert ever decided to retire/move on I would hope that the Club would approach Jennifer Watts who would slot into the position with ease.

    $800 is nothing compared to the multiple memberships I buy annually for 20+ years, but it's not a measuring contest

    You missed the point, which is fine.

    No I didn’t 

    if you can afford to buy Multiple Memberships each year, then a small price rise (CPI) is not a major problem is it. 
    If you were struggling to pay for one Trident Membership, then i have more understanding of your plight

      There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

      I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.
