Wow.   Did anyone see that coming?

Came out of nowhere in terms of our expectations!

What a very good choice it happens to be, as this bloke is quality. Let's all get behind him to make the Dees the best performing club in the competition!

We won't know if Pert's any good until after he's been in the job a while:

I thought Ray Ellis was going to be good

I thought Schwab was going to be good

I thought MacNamee was going to be good

I thought Harris was going to be good

Etc Etc Etc

Fair call. This bloke does have some pedigree football nouse, must admit.

In a vacuum - this looks a great appointment. The Jackson shadow looms large because of his success and the promotion of his commandants to his throne. My only concern is that Pert comes in and realises the success of the previous admin and doesn’t think to stamp his authority in the wrong ways.

As for those that were overlooked - they can see this as an opportunity to learn under a great operator or they should look beyond from October.

Not me. Never even thought he was a contender.

On the face of it seems a good appointment, as he is very experienced in the role from previous clubs.

In a nutshell.

It's midday on the day after this was announced. Why haven't we had a press conference with Pert paraded around in Demons regalia?

I thought I saw somewhere that the club offices (and Demon Shop) were going to be closed on Friday presumably because we played on a public holiday last week and because of the bye weekend. The staff have probably been given the day off.

I have a feeling the club would have preferred to announce this on their own terms but it appears as if the media got  wind of this last night and ran with it and therefore due to the abovementioned we were not prepared to roll out the announcement the way we would have liked.

I hope the "leak" to the media isn't a step back to the old days and that "leak" isn't because of any disgruntled people.

PJ held a tight ship with tight lips and that was among the things I really liked about his tenure. Also the whole Roos thing and getting much better Sponsors.

Like many on Demonland I never saw this coming and was immediately a bit shocked given our rivalry (hatred) of Collingwood. Even Lyon sounded shocked on SEN this morning, however, the more I think about it the more that I am warming to the idea. He was involved in a dramatic rise of that other club and I really crave getting back to where we were in 1964.

Very professional once again MFC and despite some of the whip lash, Collingwood would not have been big enough for both of them.

Well done Melbourne, Go Dee's.......................!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Experienced, on track, need training facilities and follow through. While the club said they wanted to promote from within, I think this is the best move, the other candidates are inexperienced for this role IMO. Give them a pay rise to keep them happy, if Mahoney wants CEO role it would be good for him to be mentored by another experienced bloke anyway. Validated by AFL also.

SWYL’s take on this decision

Pert was a great CEO at The Filth, he was there for 11 years. Probably too long in the AFL Bubble.

I hope he is as good as PJ, this club must be grown. We are Melbourne. Capital City of AFL Heartland

Let’s start being that club

80,000, 90,000, 100,000 Members is what we should expect.

I have heard people on here say that we will never be a big club.

I say Bullsh!t to that.

We are a destination club on and off the park, at this point in time...amen to that.

"cleanskin",  not wearing any collingwood identifying paraphernalia. but rather showing Melbourne's identity.

I agree with the sentiment that the decision on Pert will have involved a process of his impressing the board with his vision for the club moving forward - how to improve revenues (aligned with club direction on no pokies), higher memberships, his experience on building a state of the art training base (with social facilities).

Having a seasoned professional who's seen it all from the perspective of taking a club from 38,000 members to 75,000 will have more upside than downside.

If, however, he re-introduces Whiteboard Wednesday, I'll spew and firebomb Glen Bartlett's car myself.

Given the supposed AFL sign off it's more likely any leak came from there

One can't speak for 40 minutes but make no points of substance unless you have something tentative to base it off.

He needs to have read some self serving Yank sports bio before launching that so he has at least some grist for his quasi intellectual mill.

Any recommendations anyone?

I imagine that most of us, like myself, have great trust, admiration, respect and gratitude for the great job Peter Jackson seems to have done, while we know relatively little about our board and president and their ability to make the correct choice of a CEO.

That IMHO being the case, I can’t understand why they wouldn’t consult with PJ about this decision, even if solely to make the supporters feel more comfortable with the choice?

Of course PJ has no vote In choosing his replacement, but seeking his advice during the process would surely make supporters feel better about the choice, and how a clubs supporters feel is important too.

I hope we’re about to be informed that PJ was consulted?

I'm not worried about the three internal candidates who missed out.  Two of them would be disappointed regardless of who got the gig.  Hopefully, good practice and good sense has prevailed and they were told where their experiences fell short of the requirements.  If its all done with goodwill there is no reason for someone to spit the dummy and just leave.  After all, to be CEO of an AFL club, or senior staffer in AFL HQ a person needs AFL 'endorsement'.   So they need to gain the AFL's confidence and the required experience which may be at the Dees or elsewhere.

The person I am more worried about losing is Jason Taylor.  Hopefully, he and Pert were good mates at the Pies as I would hate for Taylor to start looking elsewhere.  He is a real 'must keep' for mine.

Surely we will have a daily picture of him in Dees gear, with a story about his activities, every day until October.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
