We paid pick 66 for Balic last year who could only muster 4 games for a garbage Freo outfit. Kent is probably best 22 in 2018's 4th best side. Pick in the 40s or jam it.

You started it.

Severely overrating Kent.  He's just not that good.

Agree.

He asks for a trade and everyone thinks he is Eddy Betts.

Fringe player at best.

Out of contract, he can just walk.

I think he has the body for contested footy and imagine saints see us as the best midfield for that.

They won’t have to pay a lot to get him and any knowledge he has to help them develop

Really? I didnt get to watch as many neutral games as I normally do this year. Why have the fans turned on him?

They think he's soft, which he might be. Was moved forward to try to deliver some skill and goals when the wing wasn't working out for him this season.

Not quite.

He's not qualified to be a free agent based on a service, if Melbourne were to delist him then yes he would become a free agent and go wherever he wants.

If Melbourne have offered him a contract which it seems most likely seen as he wasn't delisted, then a trade must be completed for him to move.

If no trade can be completed then he can nominate for either the national or pre-season draft where anyone can pick him with their pick.

Done shoulder twice in year. Courageous player who sticks up for his mates and doesn't shirk contests. Kicks like a mule and well liked. Required player in my book and someone who could make us very sorry

I can understand the sentiment but you need to consider what we offer vs the Saints.

He can refuse a one year or a one plus one deal from us (would you offer more) and stand out thus allowing himself to be picked up by the Saints in the second draft (whatever it's called these days). No one is likely to poach him.

This is one where we can and need to be generous just like Freo were with us and Balic last year.

Hey Jimbo, I see where your coming from but in all fairness you couldn't possibly compare Balic's situation to Kent's

It might end up being that way tho.

The club rates him, but he must have been told no midfield minutes are available, only see him as a small forward.

I would have liked to see him on the park more in the last couple of seasons. When he is fit he has the ability to play very good footy. The club obviously see value in him as he was not delisted. Their task now is to see what value he has in a trade to the Saints and to maximize it.

We have had two retirements in Vince and Balic, and we have delisted 5 out of contract players, with the exit of Kent that will leave 8 spaces open on the senior and rookie list. Around 20% turnover of the list after a successful season seems like a large turnover to me. It will be an interesting trade draft period.

There must be some very clear planning in place for the next month or so that the club is keeping very tight lipped about.

Melbourne: Kent to Saints & Pick 48 to North

St Kilda: Lonie to North & Pick 57 to Melbourne

North Melbourne: Preuss to Melbourne & Pick 64 to St Kilda

Melbourne gain Preuss & 57 for Kent & 48

St Kilda gain Kent & 64 for Lonie & 57

North Melbourne gain Lonie & 48 for Preuss & 64

Kent to Saints

Lonie to Kangas

Preuss to Demons

This is what being a good side looks like. Fringe players like Dean "Hurt Locker" Kent will seek opportunity elsewhere whilst we move in some ready made pieces. I wish him the absolute best. Can play. But not an AFL midfielder with his tank and too injury prone for any more than 1y deals.

Hope he makes a fist of it at the Saints

I'll be sad to see him go.  He has pace and a great penetrating kick.  Sadly his injury issues aren't going to get any better at the Saints.  Still, he's doing the right thing for his family, taking a better pay packet and a longer contract.  Good luck to him.

Only on a club forum would you see serious suggestions of a second round pick for a player like Kent. La la land stuff. If we get offered a third round pick we should take it and run. Pick 60 or thereabouts is his worth, particularly with his injury history.

That’s not to say he doesn’t have upside and could turn out to be a great pick up for the Saints, but he remains a gamble.

Six million $ contract may be a stumbling block.

I think the sticking point would be the three years.

If I’m Josh Mahoney and I’ve got Dean Kent in the room saying he’s got St Kilda offering three, I’m saying “no worries, thanks for everything, we’ll get the trade done for you”.

When Kent played well I loved his contribution: robust, a good kick, a 'goer'.

63 games is 6 seasons tells you something wasn't/isn't right. I suspect his body let him down too often. I wish him all the best, like I say, I loved it when he was good, but for the Saints to make a 3 year investment reeks of naivety to me.

Just had a baby. Probably wants a longer term contract than we are willing to offer. More likely to get to the midfield with the Saints, which apparently is something he wants. Good luck to him. I think he can be a handy player for them and I hope his body holds up.

Congratulations, Jaded. I like your direct, yet subtle, matter-of-fact announcement.

I hope the club aren't to generous and don't take anything higher than a low 3rd rounder.

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

I suppose that I should apologise for the title of this piece, but the temptation to go with it was far too great. The memory of how North Melbourne tore Melbourne apart at the seams earlier in the season and the way in which it set the scene for the club’s demise so early in the piece has been weighing heavily upon all of us. This game was a must-win from the club’s perspective, and the team’s response was overwhelming. The 36 point win over Alastair Clarkson’s Kangaroos at the MCG on Sunday was indeed — roovenge of the highest order!

  • CASEY: Werribee

The Casey Demons remain in contention for a VFL finals berth following a comprehensive 76-point victory over the Werribee Tigers at Whitten Oval last night. The caveat to the performance is that the once mighty Tigers have been raided of many key players and are now a shadow of the premiership-winning team from last season. The team suffered a blow before the game when veteran Tom McDonald was withdrawn for senior duty to cover for Steven May who is ill.  However, after conceding the first goal of the game, Casey was dominant from ten minutes in until the very end and despite some early errors and inaccuracy, they managed to warm to the task of dismantling the Tigers with precision, particularly after half time when the nominally home side provided them with minimal resistance.
