Why is Nev invisible to the umps (and Match Review)

DEE fence

Recommended Posts

I think Nev has demonstrated outstanding durability for the heavy physical work he does, but I am really over seeing him getting whacked with little or no consequence and reckon the club should ask a question about it. Last season it was a feeling, and this season I think it is something else. Except for one free yesterday, I think Nev gets bashed from pillar to post and doesn't get the frees he deserves and that quite a few of the shots he cops have been deserving of sanction. He has had concussion issues in his history and I would hate to see him finish before his time. Now I know I'll probably get yelled down for throwing petrol on embers, but I almost think the umpsMRP/MRO have a little subconscious racism, along the lines of ' he's a black fella and can cope'. I am at a loss to explain it any other way. I don't see him as someone who gives the umpires a earful either (the occasional grumble maybe) so that he has lost friends amongst officialdom. Anyway @Fairgo4Nev I reckon.

and so you should. you have given absolutely no reasons why nev or any other "black fella" has been judged with "subconcious racism" by "umps/mrp/mro". you should edit your op to remove such rubbish, or, back it up

Well done Daisy for calling it how it is... Nev is a niggly, pesty, clinger to opponents... even at MFC training. He is an A Grade stopper of small forwards and he he has more strings to his bow than that! Maybe the umps are bias towards the good stoppers!

Nev, would find the above hilarious, he gives as good as he gets, when I talk to him though we joke about the target he has on his head, pound for pound, or kilo for kilo,  he is one of the strongest at the club, hence why he finds himself on the 'big guys' as well

During your cute pillow talk did he happen to indicate that he was ready to re-sign?

With this being possibly his last 'big' contract, would assume he will do what is right for him and his family

I have tried 'begging' but that doesn't work with Nev?

Nev is stoic, without doubt, and not a sook which is obvious for all to see, It still doesn't explain to me why or justify what I think is a blind spot by officialdom. @daisycutter makes a fair point re proof, but note I use the term 'subconscious racism', because I am not arguing it is deliberate, I just honestly can't find an explanation that fits in the absence of another reason, and am looking to see what people think. I have no idea of how to get into peoples heads and prove anything one way or another, am just positing it, in the absence of a better explanation. I am happy to go with group think on whether people here think Nev gets a fair go? and if anyone else thinks he cops alot of dubious hits. If it is my bias to a player who I am a huge fan of then well, I will withdraw.

Hmm... I don't think the subconscious use of race in this instance is coming from the umpires.

Don't fret people. The AFL taking a cue from Demonland perhaps.  Sam Day has been given a week for hitting Nev:

Spare me, just quoting one of the milder comments I have heard over the years, or do you really think I endorse that?

I was at a loss to explain why Nev had not been receiving a fair go from the umps, and was wondering of it was based on unconscious bias re race. The MRP has now made it clear I was wrong and everything is hunky dory...  Also for all of you having a go for using the term 'black fella' let me paste the words from one of my favourite Aussie  groups the Warumpi Band.

Black fella, white fella
It doesn't matter, what your color
As long as you, a true fella
As long as you, a real fella

All the people, of different races
With different lives, in different places
It doesn't matter, what your name is
We got to have, lots of changes
We need more brothers, if we're to make it
We need more sisters, if we're to save it
Are you the one that's gonna stand up and be counted
Are you the one who's gonna be there when we shout it
Are you the one that's always ready with a helping hand
Are you the one who understands these family plans
Black fella, white fella
Yellow fella, any fella
It doesn't matter, what your color
As long as you, a true fella
All the people, of different races
With different lives, in different places
It doesn't

Yeah, because asking (politely) if something might be unfair about race in Australia is on a par with conspiracy theories.

why is a low blow made intentionally assessed at one week only? It is dangerous and designed to incapacitate  a player. I still can't fathom how they missed the deliberate punch to his head last week.

In my 30 odd years of watching Melbourne I've never seen a player get hung onto, pushed and scragged like Neitz without receiving a free. Yet the moment he reteliated it was a free.

I'll probably get shouted down for this but I think it is a case of reverse racism.

I'm guessing Nev would laugh in your face if you said he was roughed up and not paid fees because of his race. He'd be laughing at you.

Happy for him to laugh, was asking a question, not going to apologize for it, as I said previously, if I'm wrong I'll withdraw, just didn't think decisions his way have been fair and wanted to know if anyone else thought he was short changed and why?

Keep an eye on Nev the next game, he is always in the face of the opposition, loves it when it is tough, surprisingly

As you saw if he gets belted, he usually buries one or two of the opposition legally during the rest of the game

Defenders always get the rough end of the pineapple with the umpires

Upon seeing the replay of this again, 1 week is way too lenient.  It wasn't just a gut punch, he's gone straight for and made good solid contact in the jatz crackers.  If this was to happen to Danger, Dusty or another big name player, it would be 3 to 4 weeks, without question.

I'm actually with @DaisyDeeciple  on this one that Nev (and the dog act it was) isn't getting the respect that he deserves.

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
