When you have Hibberd , Jetta , Lever and OMac the most improved  without a doubt, in your backline, you cannot help but feel confident. They are the four main stays there.  Hunt , Vince and Lewis can help shore up  the remaining by sharing.

Hogan could get a week for acting and flopping to the ground.

They are cracking down on this.

He was chopped in the throat, yes he fell (but being a biased supporter) I excuse this as the force was hard enoung to justify the free he was making sure the ump saw it. I also think it is a hell of allot better than him turn around and smacking Carlisle and getting weeks. Was furious he missed though. Was still BOG.

I literally did not even realise he played today til you just mentioned him and I checked the AFL app.

You're probably right, but I live in hope the fittness department can weave the same magic they did with Tommy McD, is about time 4two6 didn't equal half a season..

Is anyone still questioning Petracca vs McCartin draft order?

One piece of play today said it all for me.  McCartin pushes Gawn in the back, giving away the free.  The ball swiftly goes coast to coast, to end up in the hands of Trac for a goal.  Was a thing of beauty...!   Was no doubt not lost on a lot of Saints fans...!

If you watch the replay, watch closely, it’s not Richard Tambling or Aaron Fiora. Although one might make that mistake, as he [censored] himself as much as those 2 combined.

Brayshaw played his best game for us today and l could not fault his game . He was clean and moved with grace and confidence. I am sure his parents would have been proud of him today as always. However  l was.

Dom Tyson 27 possession 7 marks and a great goal  That is two consistent games in a row and two winning games you helped win.

Channel & News reported it as a contact hit for which he was given a free......i couldnt see it and neither did the commentators, but maybe it was there...?

So he wasn't touched? I couldn't see.........

Was it just fatigue in the last 1/4, but we were caught out of position trailing a sainter a fair few times. If fatigue , fair enough. 21 and sunny in brissy next week but sundown early (5pm), hopefully weather not a factor.

I'll be interested to see what happens with this - the umpire was on the right side of the contest and paid a free kick instantly, so he must have hit him high.  He might have played it up a little but I doubt he'll get anything more than a fine for it.

So , hang on, Hogan got hit, Umpire pays free kick, therefore must have been high, no report against Carlisle? Hogan in trouble?

Not having a shot at Wise...butWTF

Umpire signalled at the time Hogan got hit in the throat, which is high. Hogan fell over, got the free and everyone is saying he overplayed it and dived.

My point was that, if anything against Hogan is to occur in regards to his supposed dive, it will be small fine, not a suspension as another poster suggested.

If it was either Harmes or Tyson...sorry ...Harmes out.

Tyson is infuriating at times...but his games are invariably misunderstood...imho

I have to agree with you.

Yeah, we should play more games there....

Quality game today.  You have to accept that they were tired and there's another six day break coming so we may have a hard time up north next week.  We still did everything we needed to.  Never looked like we weren't in control of the game.

Gus continues to show us that his mojo is coming back and it's great to see.

Oliver is a freak, but he needs to kick more often.  He's actually a beautiful field kick when he decides to use it.

Spargo continues to impress.

The three roaming tall forwards is working nicely right now. I don't know that the Weed is ready for AFL just yet, but he's showing signs and it's probably worth persisting with him.

I have to agree that ANB is probably closest to getting the chop.  For a while he looked like he was going to step up to another level, but he's fallen right back again.

Gee Charlie Spargo doesn’t do much wrong. Makes good position, looks composed and disposes well. Good kick for goal as well. Lot to like.

Nothing will happen.  The replay only shows the angle from behind Hogan, so you can't see Carlisles left arm swing up and hit Hogan in the throat. Watch slowly and you see the action. I think Hogan's fall was genuine, more because he was hit in the throat off guard and sort of stumbled over.

How many times over the last ten years did demons "run teams back into form?"

I know it wasn't a massively classy or tough game... but I'm still celebrating heartily. We beat them a couple of times last year, but we haven't been "used to" beating the Saints, particularly at Etihad, in a long time. They're awful. Putrid in fact. Even with the draft gifts they've gotten. We're a 5-10 goal better side.

I know we have a long way to go. But I'm already celebrating this being the new normal. Go demons.

Key stat leaders

Clearances  -  Oliver 10,  Brayshaw/Harmes 5

Tackles  -      Jones 9,  Fritsch 6

One percenters -     O McDonald 8,  Lever 5

Inside 50's - Brayshaw 8,  Oliver/T McDonald 5

Time on ground   -   O McDonald 98%,  Lewis 91%

  • REPORT: Essendon

What were they thinking? I mean by “they” the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around. It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack. Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winning 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.

It’s Game Day, and the Demons are staring down the barrel of an 0-5 start for the first time since 2012 as they take on Essendon at Adelaide Oval for Gather Round. In that forgettable season, Melbourne finally broke their drought by toppling the Bombers. Can lightning strike twice? Will the Dees turn their nightmare start around and breathe life back into 2025?
