FWIW Tony Sheahan reported on his twitter feed that the Demons are back in the race for Gaff.  Usually a fairly speculative fellow, but he's put it out there.

He also reported North is making a last ditch attempt at Lynch. Even if his reports are BS, amusement nonetheless.

Hello Brayden.

Nice thought, very nice. We want Maxy to reach the 300 game level. We want a target. Preuss is the man.

I'd like nothing more than if we could chat again with Gaff and convince him to come.  He's exactly what we need.

As I've mentioned, Connors stated he won't be going to Melbourne, but that was 3 weeks ago.  Things can change.  I hope we go all in for one final crack.

We should also have a crack at getting Andrew Brayshaw across and giving them adjoining lockers.

You mean Charlie or Max have to change numbers ??

I can't hear the fat lady singing yet! Let's hope we are having another red hot go at him.

Imagine:

In: Gaff (FA), May, KK, Preuss, pick 5 or 6, future 2ndor 3rd rounder (Kent), pick 36 (AVB)

Out: Hogan, Kent, AVB, pick 44 (Preuss) maybe some later pick swaps.

Nice.

I doubt you'd find one Demon supporter who would want him on that contract.

North are so desperate to land anyone good.

Surely most supporters don't give a rat's arse what the players are paid. I honestly do not know why anyone gets hung up on that. It's almost like people are more interested in the accounting than they are the footy.

Get the player. Let the bean counters worry about how to line the dollars up.

The Gaff to Melbourne scuttlebut went cold at exactly the same time as the clubs met for pre-trade discussions. I suspected at the time that West Coast said they were entirely prepared to match any offers and invited out of free agency trade offers to desist.

Melbourne, I imagine, would have intimated a walk from the table at the time, publicly at least, with North confident they could still call the bluff and outbid a WC offer and WC happy enough that this would maximise free agency compo.

I'm still on the belief - unsupported by any evidence - that Gaff has chosen us as his desired destination, but West Coast has to date blocked that potential. But I also think it's a fluid situation - with AFL pre-trade compo advice to come into play.

Conners, naturally, stands to gain a great deal more from Gaff going to North - potentially in the ball-park of $100,000 or more to his personal bank balance. But I still have faith that our club is working its arse off behind the scenes to get this done.

Agreed. We should take him on a tour of Jihad Stadium and Blundstone Arena to remind him of what the alternative is.

He's exactly what we need playing the inside / outside role in tandem with Brayshaw. Not exclusively as a winger

Surely the WCE premiership throws a spanner in the works. He's now desperate to win one. That won't happen at Norf, the war chest has no flag in there. Let's do this.

I, along with many others regularly have a laugh at Norf, but I must admit that I have a good deal of respect for them.

They NEVER tank. Even with a list low on talent, they do their absolute best to win every game they play, and always look to avoid the spoon at all costs.

They are looking at bringing in 3 players who, if recruited, will add significant, immediate value to their side. Their strength for quite a while has been their big bodied midfield, and the thing holding them back was a high quality outside group.

North may improve significantly if they add all 3 players. And well done to them if thats the case.

My issue is they are taking a slightly delusional look into the near future. (no disrespect intended Roos fans) Their heavy hitters, apart from a very good full forward in SideShow Bob, are their older group, at or above 30yrs old.

While all 3 players are quite good, it would deplete their salary cap, and leave them a VERY short window to achieve the ultimate before their warriors retire.

Will watch them with interest if they get all of their targets.

I want this guy in the red and blue so bad next year.

He will stop at nothing (bar clubbing someone in the face) to experience what he missed out on at the weekend.

I think deep down he knows this wont happen at Norf especially if he himself takes 10% of the entire teams salary cap.

We were offering the same as West Coast prior to Hogan packing his bags. The difference in cap space with him going out might just be enough to get us back in the race.

North offering stupid money, but that has to worry anyone just as much as it entices them. Depends on what sort of character you are. I know what type of person I think Gaff is.

There's a post like this every year that gets Demonland salivating. And it never comes close but this doesn't seem beyond the realm of possibilities. Make it happen Moonie!

They do this because even when they're in the finals they've got bugger-all support. They can't afford to bottom out and they know it. Ironically, it means they'll struggle to have the ultimate success as a result.

Wouldn't have thought I was bragging. But we certainly have more supporters and we apparently clearly could afford to bottom out... however many times we have.

When I was growing up, Carey and his Roos were dominating the competition and either winning flags or going very close. They were the Friday Night Specialists. Yet, they never managed to convert this into memberships or supporter base. If we'd been in the same position during the 1990s and won flags, we'd be in a very different position membership-wise than we are now.

In fact, if we win a flag in the next 2-3 years, I strongly believe we can reach 70,000 members. North could only dream of this.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
