Bugg had a pretty bad track record though. Still, given that Brayshaw's season is over it will probably be 8

I'll defend Bugg here. He doesn't have a bad record.  As far as I am aware, last year is the only time he has ever been suspended.  I can't find any info about any other suspensions.  Only fines (for making contact with an injured Nick Reiwoldt, and for "saluting" the richmond cheer squad).

A lot of players have been suspended for hitting him though. He gets a bad go from the media.  He might be annoying but he has never over stepped the aggression line on the field before,  and he wasn't looking at Mills when he hit him in retaliation to bring hit from behind.

Not at all what I said.

All I said is Bugg had a track record, I never defended what Gaff did or said he deserved less. I actually said he will get 8 if you had bothered to read my first comment.

You literally said hed been all over the media for the wrong reasons.

He had been in the media for all the wrong reasons.

I still didn't say he deserved a harsher penalty than Gaff. The point I was making is that the perception of the person will inevitably have an impact, even though it shouldn't. Much like when Rance threw an elbow in to the back of Jack Watt's head and got let off with a slap on the wrist

On the subject of getting Gaff at year's end, would we want to now? Not from a "we don't want those types of characters at our club" view point, but when Gaff does return to the field, just how much would this affect his game?

I get the impression that he is more on the introverted side of the scale, there'd be a good chance that when he returns he may be a shadow of what he has been due to being so shaken up by today's events.

Here's "closer" vision.

How can Adam Simpson come out and say he’s not sure that was an intentional hit?

David King interviewed Gaff in the rooms and asked if it was a brain fade or an accident. Gaff didn’t make any excuses in reply, said he will be dealt with during the week.

It seems we are in fierce agreement on the second point.

Agreed. Gaff may now become the Hunted.

May lose all his Mojo to play elite level.

It is a serious hit. The media will be intense

It knocked about $200k off his asking price, I'll tell you that much.

Gotta wonder if he'll stick with West Coast now.

I think getting out of WC and starting fresh is probably good for him. But maybe not into the Melbourne media fishbowl.

Personally I'd have him at Melbourne still.  But I'd want to seriously consider his mental health in the fall out of this incident.

He wouldn't be a good fit at MFC now. Can't imagine Angus being too friendly after his young brothers injury. Disgraceful by Gaff. Probably get off with a reprimand. Remember, he is an Eagles player.

Currently on the same team as Hamish Brayshaw.  He’s got some uncomfortable conversations ahead of him whichever way he turns.

Not if he goes to another Victorian club.

Same as buggy. 6 weeks.

We can only have 1 thug on our team. Bugg out gaff in.

Also how would Gus feel about playing side by side with the bloke who broke his little brothers jaws and flattened a bunch of his front teeth? I have a feeling each of the Brayshaws will have him in their sights next time they see him. They seems quite a tight bunch of brothers.

I’m predicting 6 weeks. He was looking directly at him, it’s not an accident and young Brayshaw is gone for the year and in the hospital. I feel for Mrs Brayshaw, she’s just dealt with Gus’s concussion issues and now she sees this. Plus she’s got another son in the army!

Ok, so it's universally agreed that Gaff hit on Andrew Brayshaw was terrible, yet there's no outrage when posters talk about the Brayshaw boys having Gaff in their sights next year? Revenge is fine, I gather...

Posters wanting Simpson suspended, posters wanting Gaff deregistered, posters not wanting him to play at the Dees next year... you'll all clap excitedly when he runs out in red and blue next year (except SWYL, of course)

He should get 8 weeks - it was a terrible incident, much worse than Bugg’s IMO both as an incident and in respect of the injury it caused.

I’d still like to see Gaff in the red and the blue next year.

I otherwise hope Brayshaw recovers quickly and it has no impact on his confidence going forward.

It was a deliberate act unquestionably, but Gaff could not have expected his punch to have such a devastating outcome. When we call this a brain fade we mean a spontaneous yet deliberate act with unintended consequences. That's what this is, and it is out of character.

That won't prevent Gaff copping eight weeks as he should, but the character assassination around this is over the top. An otherwise talented ball player has a moment of madness. He is not Barry Hall, or Leigh Mathews for that matter.

But what does it do for our recruiting plans if he is realistically in our sights? He is cheapened goods, but playing alongside Angus could be problematic now.

They had Jones on SEN this morning and he said Angus was quite shocked and upset from memory.

Good point about Mrs Brayshaw, a mother worries enough daily without having the footy issues she's dealt with, I hope she's doing OK too.

I suspect for him to play alongside Angus Brayshaw, he’d have to convince Angus (and the rest of the Brayshaw family) that he absolutely did not intend to injure Andrew in the way he did and that he is not otherwise a sniper/poor character.

Bugg and Angus Brayshaw appear to get on very well - perhaps Angus already has some insight into the effect that this can have on the perpetrator, especially if the harm was genuinely not intended.

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.

It's Game Day and the Demons have a chance to notch up their third consecutive win — something they haven’t done since Round 5, 2024. But to do it, they’ll need to exorcise the Demons of last year’s disastrous trip out West. Can the Dees continue their momentum, right the wrongs of that fateful clash, and take another step up the ladder on the road to redemption?
