Goodness me, this bloke is a jet and will contribute to our side amazingly.

Today he was absolutely pivotal in so much of the Eagles play.

We desperately need a player of Gaff’s qualities and skills.

Go and get Gaff.

I have a strong hunch that we are into him, and have been for a while.

He will look good in our jumper.

Didn’t we spend our money on Lever. We freed up Wattsy $ to afford Lever. What’s left?  Only if we cash in Vince and Lewis.

Vince yes.

We have a couple of RFAs to re-sign ourselves don't we? Tmac and Nev?

Jackson said we still have enough money to bye 1 more gun. I would go for Sloane before Gaff but it would be great to get either of them.

I feel Sloane is similar to the players we already have, while Gaff is a genuine point of difference.

Gaff! Gaff! Gaff!

I will check in with my source this week and report back.

Jordie will play his last year next year and I would say Bernie is on his last legs this year. Jordie will probably decline to the level Bernie is at now (serviceable but not even close to the player he was).

I would love Gaff to come to us though the Eagles maintaining of their traditional winning form may make that harder. He is exactly what we need. We have 5 blokes going for the one ball but no one spreading.

I feel like I see an incarnation of this thread every year on here...

The RFA variable is a significant one this time around.

Up to a point Steve.

While Gaff may choose us, WCE can match the offer and force a trade ala Dangerfield from Adelaide.  It would probably mean us trading out a top player to WCE (or to some else to get the required pick) as I don't think we can trade the 2019 1st round pick.

WCE would make a call once they know where they finish on the ladder.  The higher up the more likely to force a trade as their 1st round compensation pick would likely be in the mid to late teens.

Saints are touted as being very keen altho can't imagine he would go there.

As someone else mentioned Jackson flagged we have the salary cap space to go after an FA but finding the currency might get tricky if we are forced into a trade...who/what would we be prepared to give up?

Edit:  Reckon WCE would ask for Jesse as Kennedy will be 31 this year.   To quote @daisycutter phrase:  'computer says no' on such a deal.

Saints are touted as the most likely destination.  Family barrack for them, they have the trade currency and huge salary cap space.

I thought I had read that Gaff was a Melbourne supporter?

i remember that being mentioned years ago now.  But in modern footy it does not mean as much anymore unless your name is Howe...

That’s been the common understanding particularly on here over the years...

My bad.  I misread an article on FA's.  Will go back and edit my post.

Cheers,

Gaff is exactly what we need. At 25, he's the perfect age bracket for us. All Australian, lead the league for total kicks and inside 50s for a number of years, experienced, played in lots of finals including a grand final, but still has plenty of footy ahead of him. He's an elite runner,  very durable and consistent, good outside midfielder, exactly what we need.
Doesn't mean anything, but he was a Dees supporter growing up and comes from a mad demon family who were still members and involved at the club after he started playing for West Coast.

While Sloane is a good player, he's 29, struggles with injury and a tag, and is very similar to what we already have. I wouldn't bother chasing him.

Would obviously love him at the club. But I think Lucifer is right in that we would need to give up something pretty substantial to get him. In the end we really had to give up a fair bit for Lever. This guy would be top 10 outside mids in the comp in his prime at 25.

  • REPORT: Port Adelaide

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
