Brendan McCartney - Moved to the bench

Watts the matter

McCartney was definitely in the box during the Brisbane game.

I can vividly recall him giving Goodwin an almighty death stare after we fell over the line, as the cameras captured it.

Yep I remember that clearly as well. Seems like more to the story here, like his dogs issues. As I said, been waiting for it but was hoping it wouldn’t.

Anyone thought that maybe they were trying him back in the Coaches Box, but given what happened last week, they’ve moved him back down to the bench where he can get closer to the players?

Swap "the players" with "Weids"... moved himself

He developed a group of Premiership players that Beveridge was the beneficiary of!

At first glance you could be tempted to think this but history and events suggest otherwise.

BM had a decent list as it were. Indeed part of that what his doing. Also of his doing was a lot of disenchantment and a big falling out with particular parts of the club and indeed its capt.

Things were going that swimmingly that he couldn't get his lads up to pinch the choccies and eventually the Kennel chucked him out.

Bevo had the job of re-mastering the team and did so remarkably. Everyone there punched above their weight but proved unsustainable.

Riding coattails is a furphy ;)

Kudos to Luke. He nursed his damaged goods into a very good team. Other coachs and teams have their measure now though. The pups pinched one and good on 'em. Wish we could.

Boils down to whether we still have confidence in Goodwin..and I , for one, still do. We're just so close to being a really good team atm. Let him get the coaches box just as he wants it so he can think through the style he wants to play with support. He's our coach and , for now, weve got to give him what he needs. Macca seems like a great shaper of young players...maybe the best going around. But in terms of strategy and handling of the more experienced players  I think he is down quite a few pegs. So, Im happy to have goody pulling the reins without interference. IF that is indeed what was happening!

I'd pay money to watch you say that to BMs face.

Check the vision, he is aiways down on the bench, Roos was at the club 2 years ago, the whole set up has changed in that time, why woukd Macca who likes to be close to the action move into the bax, beggars belief.

This year he has been on the box, in previous years he was on the bench.

Before we start jumping off the West Gate, again, let's wait and hear from a trusted source about issue first.  Right now all we know, from a rumour, is McCartney will be on the bench instead of the coaches box.  We know nothing else, regardless of what someone like Tom Morris (who has come up with some absolute shite this year) has to say on the matter.

Yes lets wait for Saty....

oh hang on...

This is overated. The Kennel was a mess: lost their coach, captain, CEO and a few others in a short space of time. No one wanted to be there.

Beveridge turned it around very quickly but the reality is they made the finals and had a fantastic September. Have been ordinary since then.

This talk of 'McCartney being the genius behind the dog's flag' is rubbish. Yes he takes credit for developing some of their junior players but he was not liked down there and couldn't get them winning regularly.

The raps on him at Melbourne have been good but maybe there is some friction there with Goody seeing him interfering beyond his role. Or maybe things were simply working better when McC was on the bench. Who knows?

But what I do know is I hate seeing our name in the press for this stuff. It reeks of disharmony and when added to the pre-season camp stuff, that should NEVER have gone outside and should have been handled in-house, it worries me that things aren't rosy. Then when you see clear disfunction on the field it starts to smell more....

Tend to agree with this. There are just too many of these stories floating around to think that it is a happy camp at present. Hopefully there are just one or two dissidents who can quietly be ushered out the back door. If it is more widespread than one or two, then clearly there is a major problem that Jackson and Mahoney need to handle immediately.

Again i wonder about the external communication by the dees. Add this to the growing list of communication blunders (the departure of watts, the camp, the silence after the round 23 pies game, the woeful website etc).

I mean as if in the AFL fishbowl that exists in Melbourne someone was not going to pick this story up (and really it is unbelievable it was a person contracted by the MFC who ran with it). Sheesh.

Comms 101 is to get ahead of stories, which could have easily happened in a casual, informal way. For eg mahoney booking a interview on the weekend  and responding to the inevitable question about how we respond to last weeks game, with an answer like:

'We have looked at the game as an opportunity to improve all all aspects of how we go about things, including how we can better communicate key messages to our players when the opposition gets a run on. It is easy to forget how young our list is and we have two key leaders in TMac and Jack out so this week we are going to have Macca go back to his role that he played so brilliantly for the last 3 years as a key person communicating directly to players on the bench and conveying messages from the box'

Do we do this? No, instead once again we are reactive and in damage control.

And to be honest comments such as:

'That’s been the change and there isn’t much more to add to it than that.' begs the question

'well perhaps there is not much more to add but i'm really interested in the bit you are leaving out '

Amateur hour.

What worries me is that Goodwin and the other coaches don't think they are communicating down to the bench well enough. Why is this a concept we are struggling with? Are the players to blame? Do our coaches have a communication problem? Do they want Macca on the bench to help with tactical changes on the ground during quarters?

Anyway if McCartney is in charge of both player and coach development, how can he develop coaches if he is not in the box on game day assessing what is going on, which is the most important part of any coaches' job.

We have done pretty well with BM on the bench with the players and relaying the Coaches messages to them, why mess with a good system in the first place, makes no sense...............!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Go You Mighty Demons tonight.......!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    THE BLOW by Whispering Jack

Narrm’s finals prospects took a crushing blow after the team’s insipid performance at Optus Stadium against a confident Waaljit Marawar in the first of its Doug Nicholls Round outings for 2024.  I use the description “crushing blow” advisedly because, although the season is not yet at it’s halfway mark, the Demons have now failed abysmally in two of their games against teams currently occupying bottom eight places on the ladder.  The manner in which these losing games were played out w

HALF FULL by KC from Casey

It was a case of the Casey Demons going into a game with a glass half full in their match up against the Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields on Saturday. As the list of injured and unavailable AFL and VFL listed players continues to grow and with Melbourne taking all three emergencies to Perth for the weekend on a “just in case” basis, its little brother was always destined to struggle. Casey was left with only eight AFL listed players from who to select their team but only two - an out-of-form

It's Game Day and the Demons have returned to the site of their drought breaking Premiership to take on the West Coast Eagles in what could very well be a danger game for Narrm at Optus Stadium. A win and a percentage boost will keep the Dees in top four contention whilst a loss will cast doubt on the Dees flag credentials and bring them back to the pack fighting for a spot in the 8 as we fast approach the halfway point of the season.

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had
