I cant see Petty being the answer,  he does not have the competitive mindset. Not sure if anyone listened to Mike Lombardi this morning on radio, it was excellent. He said, you can teach skill and game plans, but you cant instill competitiveness. Think Jack Watts as the perfect example.  Petty strikes me as being in that mould.

Though, at this stage of the year, we have no other option to keep with him, it wont hurt.

Petty has a long long way to go before anything can be said, for mine Weideman can’t be judged on this season. It was a train wreck. Has to go around next year, hopefully starts preseason training now.

Fair comment and Mindset may have been the wrong word to be honest, i acknowledge that, its my perception of him that he is not an urgent, ultra competitive type, from the outside looking in, he may do so, but id argue that he is more on the laconic side.

I hope we stick with him for the next 4 weeks though, confidence is always one of the best tonics for form.

What a stupid and ridiculous statement.

Petty is still only 19 years of age and already holding up his end of the bargain. He will be a very good footballer in years to come.

You simply cannot get to AFL level football without being competitive. Crazy to say otherwise.

At 19, Petty has shown promise at both ends and has demonstrated he had a bit of mongrel about him. With good development and fitness I am confident he will become a very handy player.

Can we develop him and some of the other young players properly? It's one area in which we don't have a great record: development.

I’m with Dazzle on Petty. He is our current best chance of a 3rd key forward and is still very young and raw. Imagine another 20 games and 5-6 kgs of muscle, with another pre season and you will have a good footballer. He can take a big grab and needs to improve his set shots and he will be ok for us.

He kicked 3 against the dogs, should have kicked 3 against the Eagles and one against StKilda. Averaging over 2 a game in you your first 3 games as a forward at senior level ain’t that shabby. Worth bearing in mind the most “laconic” player I ever saw play was Peter Hudson.

Poor Sam.

Does anyone else sometimes look at his expression on field and just think 'this guy knows he is cursed'?

He clearly is cursed, but good on him for carrying on despite that.

Hogan says hello. Now that’s a kid who is cursed.

Sam had a brilliant finals campaign and a few minor setbacks. He’s a skinny KPF with under 50 games experience. He has had the same up and down ride as most.

“Brilliant finals campaign” ? Please Jaded, you make it sound like he replicated Ablett Snr’s finals efforts in 1989. Weid had one one good game against Geelong on an off night for them. Hawks he was just okay. West Coast he barely registered a stat.

The rest of his career to date has been dreadful bordering on delist-worthy. And he’s not that skinny at all. No less so than Eric Hipwood, Aaron Naughton and Charlie Curnow who’ve shown ten times more ability at the level.

Most indicators are pointing towards a bust.

Bump.

Great article on Weid on AFL website. I'm not savvy enough to add it to this post but if someone could it would be great.

Explains why he wasn't getting a game while we all screamed out for him earlier this year.

What doesn't surprise me is who he turned to for help.... Steven May.

Many here have said it was a terrible trade getting him to the club, even a failed one especially after schooner gate,  but he is just the type of leader we need with a hard edge and no soft underbelly.

Anyway great article if someone could upload it!

Makes it clear he had some things to work on to get back in the team.  He has done so and it has fuelled the fires to be competitive and stay in the squad.  Used May to help him get better (ie, develop, for those who say we don't develop players).  Also great leadership shown by May and Lever to help him on his path.  Now leading the marks inside 50/game stat.

A nice article.

Those who want to criticize the May trade should read this. Not only was he instrumental in getting Harley Bennell to the club during the summer, he was also driving high standards in other players like Weid at the same time. No coincidence that Sam is now starting to beat most defenders in real games. May is having a pretty good year himself too with plenty more to give. I like Ben King too but the trade goes so much deeper than that IMO.

Thanks for the link.

Hes starting to hit his straps. Must admit at 23 hes taken a little longer than most. Sure I am not alone in having doubts about him.

Hes an  exciting player and heres hoping that him and 18 yo Jackson become a great duo for the club.

bit of a puffpiece and still doesn't explain why he wasn't picked.

We all knew his faults and I doubt that a few training sessions fixed them.He needed matches.

The reality is that goodwin backed his inferior gameplan and lost.

Shades of repetition with his continual inclusion of AVB but that's for another thread.

People should read the article because he admits he was not agressive enough but when you watch his play now he is hitting packs at speed which helps and has gone from juggling marks to virtually a one grab player which makes him a much better player.

I think the time he spent on the outer with May and Lever may have helped him recover his confidence in his ability.

I had selected him in the team for round 2 Melbourne web site.

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,
