Based on the deal the Pies did with Chris Mayne, we should still get a first rounder for Weid, even if he is very unlikely to ever make the grade.

I reckon this kid ( 20Yrs_8Mths ) to this point, just needs a bit of faith shown.

He's a big lad ( Height: 195cm_Weight: 97kg ) who needs some more muscle, and a little help from his mates.

Lets see what we get first, before we make any rash predictions on a lad, who has played 2 seasons, and is yet to become an adult.

Like most big guys, I think this guy needs time to develop and establish his game.  Tom Hawkins is the classic, but the more recient example I can think of is Tim O'Brian for Hawthorn.  When we played Hawthorn for the first time in 2016, I thought O'Brain looked like a passenger in their side, failing to make much of an impact (ironically, asides from one late goal which helped sink us that day), but watching him last year, I think he started to look much more imposing as a player and gave me the impression (from the limited exposure I've had to him) that he looked like he might have a good future as an AFL player.  O'Brain is 3 years older and longer in the system than Weid.

If we can pick up guys with gammy hamstrings from GWS and keep them on our list for a few years on the basis of potential, then I think it's well worth continued perseverance and patience with the Weid.

This is when you know you're in trouble. O'Brien is an ordinary player who can take a nice grab from time to time but lacks the all round game and will never make it as a result.

As others have said, on draft night Weideman was deemed the potential steal of the draft.

That year he endured injury-induced setback after setback, but when he played he was spectacular. He also was one of the best on ground players when he played a half of football against a VFL side. Finally, he had premiership captain next to his name from the year prior.

Yes, Curnow looked sensational last night, and yes, I would like him at the Dees. But at the time of the draft he had just been arrested for drink driving and subsequently refusing to perform a breath test. He came across as a bad-boy, a meat-head, whatever you want to call him. The club obviously questioned his ability to commit to being a full-time professional athlete. Yes, we chose the "nice guy" who had, and still has, great potential. Sure, we could have selected the "mongrel", however, based on the facts available at the time that "mongrel" may potentially damage the culture of the club or have off-field issues such as Dayle Garlett or Jake Stringer.

Carlton also had big doubts about Curnow which is why they took Harry McKay ahead of him.

In fact, Curnow was the 6th key position player taken in that draft behind:

Weitering

Schache

Francis

Weideman

McKay.

None of those player have set the world on fire yet.  Some will, some won’t.  But the fact of the matter is we won’t know for a few more years yet.

In addition, it’s probably worth noting who was playing full back last night for Carlton whilst Curnow played full forward.  Liam Jones is a KPP who didn’t play a good match until the age of 26. Some guys burst onto the scene... some take time.

It's all a bit of a laugh... but it begs the question. Pies first rounder next year. Will be a high pick. If they offered it.... Not that they will. But every player in the league has a price. What would be enough for us to trade Weed. Keeping in mind Tom Lynch (crows) was traded after a few years for steak knives and has turned into a gun.

Agree with all pleading patience. I think OMac, whilst still a work in progress, is a demonstration of our club investing in young KP player development and that rewards are forthcoming (perhaps slower than desired, but in line with our teams tilt for a flag). Weids has been more of a slow burn with injuries, but there's been a few games where he's shown that it's worth the continued investment in him.

No one was expecting him to star either last year or this but the fact that he is not considered capable of filling a short term gap is as Dr G just said ... "underwhelming".

And don't say he isn't getting a run this time because he lacked  a pre-season. He wouldn't have been considered anyway.

Lists require analysis and this is what we are entitled to do as followers of the team. Just accepting the mediocrity of the last fifty years got us to where we are.

No, I think you are missing the point, that's exactly what has happened, perhaps you should read through this thread again.

He was 19 last year and didn't dominate, well howdy doody, what did you expect, he's had a taste of what's required and now he knows what to do when he gets back in the side.

Get off his back and just learn to be happy that we have a team that's good enough to allow him to develop before he gets thrown to the wolves.

I saw him kick 6 goals in the first half against the Box Hill hawks last year. The boy has got it...
