Clearly I was confused that someone who was on one hand complaining about forced education on social issues, then reveals he doesn't actually care at all.  Secondary in my confusion, when faced with such breathtaking powers of logic and persuasion, was the idea that people are sick of social and political issues... except for the ones they happen to agree with, such as ANZAC day.

Exactly social issues belong on the General Board. Why the AFL in its capacity as the peak body of footyball operations weighs into it is beyond me. Whilst the AFL think it is a football issue surely it stays out of place on the football forum.

I agree that this thread has transitioned away from the original post (which, believe it or not, was about Max Gawn and any role he might have with the AFL) and that it's time it was either locked or moved to the General Thread.

In the case of Nicky Winmar's gesture, the AFL adopted that as part of their campaign against racism.  The same could be said for the other two Olympics related images. Yes they were individuals making a stance, but in all cases those images and the issues they represented were supported by the respective organisations... so not really such a different concept at all.

Well, this thread has been taken over by the 'what about me' mob, which is unfortunate.

So, I'll just reiterate - the reason the AFL is keen to actively support a variety of social inclusion causes is because until quite recently it was completely unsafe for several kinds of people to go to watch a game, let alone play.

If you feel that as a result of extensive past experience you and a community you identify with have a hard time feeling safe from any variety of choruses of insults, harassment, groping, spitting, and bashings at the football, on the way to or from games, or by wound up football supporters post-game when you are just minding your own business, I am quite sure the AFL would be very keen to hear from you and to take action to help reduce the problem.

Wow, I am just picturing how berserk you'd go if the AFL turned around and said the government should prevent you from getting married. Because, y'know, that's the other side, isn't it? One side saying 'government shouldn't prevent people living their lives' and the other side saying 'government should judge and interfere whenever they like'.
