Hello SBS (or Channel 31) - Goodbye Foxtel

It would appear that we have reached the point of no return on TV rights and that SBS will do Friday nights into Sydney and Brisbane - SBS TO TELECAST AFL MATCHES.

Even if Les Murray does the commentary in Swahili with subtitles, I'm cancelling my Foxtel subscription. Second rate movies and dud sports aren't enough to justify the ongoing cost any more.

Deb watching SBS - who would ever have thought!!!

Once confirmed Foxtel will definitely NOT be broadcasting the footy, I will also be cancelling my paytv subscription. I would have kept it going for Fox Footy but since that went I hardly ever have it on. What a waste of cash! I could be putting that away for an extra trip to Melbourne for a game next year!!

I'm actually just signing up to Foxtel now. I want to watch my Spurs in the Premier League, and the Victory playing away from home. Football would have been an added bonus, but it doesn't bother me either way. Dees free to air every week!

love my foxtel

5 premier league games a week, family guy, simpsons, scrubs, ab fab, little britian, futurama the list goes on

WHAT MORE COULD YOU WANT????

Family guy - On channel 7

Scrubs - On chanel 7

Little Britian - Buy the DVD (its not expensive compared to foxtel)

Futurama - Channel 10 at 7pm every night

Simpsons - 7:30 every night chanel 10

What I would like if i got foxtel

EPL. Thats it

Foxtel show delaied broadcast of 24 season, lost, prison break, Siam etc etc etc.

Foxtel is great yes...if it were for free. The fact that i wouldnt pay more than $5 a month for foxtel is the story tho. Im a happy free to air man now. Worried about foxtel coming back in the mix but woohoo.

I totally support this. This is the way it should be - FREE TO AIR. SBS would do a great job I'm sure, just like Seven and Ten's joint efforts. I did hear that the SBS coverage would be available via digital tv into Sydney... but if digital is available here in Melbourne, would we be able to watch it too?

I think this is the best decision made thus far in this coverage war between networks. Now if only SBS, Ten and Seven would sign the dotted line...

Word is the new Friday night night line up will be as follows

8:30 AFL

9:30 Euro Art House double feature.

1:30 Soccer

SBS marketing dept have gone into a frenzy at the prospect of a Friday night ratings bonanza with ockers, knockers and soccer.

And if they show Elvis Presley and Ben Stiller movies , they can add rockers and Fokkers to this agenda

One hour for AFL?

Does that mean they only show the first quarter or the whole game in fast forward?

It looks like Channel 31 might get Friday night games instead...

"...while Seven is still keen to off-load Friday night matches to community broadcaster Channel 31 in Sydney and Brisbane to ensure that they are shown live into the key developing markets, as stipulated in the broadcast agreement with the AFL." - [View Article]

Also in the article...

"Dennis Cometti returns to the Seven fold after five years at Nine to call Friday Night Football on Seven alongside Bruce McAvaney, while triple Brisbane Lions premiership skipper Michael Voss will be a new addition to the Ten broadcasting team in 2007."

That's the best news I've heard so far.

the only difference is simpsons is on nearly every night of the week..

  • 3 weeks later...

This would have to go down as one of the biggest blunders in the history of the AFL.

On again

Off again

On again

Off again

On again

I'll be rapt if comes through, purely as I pay my $60 a month for Foxtel, and without footy it ain't worth it. I won't hold my breath.

I reckon the ideal split should be 5/3 in favour of FTA. Just like 2002-2006. 4/4 is a little unfair on non-subscribers.

Probable Breakup - Round 1

Probable Breakup - Round 1

...

Sunday

Adelaide V Essendon - Channel 9 1:10

Sorry to be a smart ar$e, but i don't think Channel 9 will be showing this game!

But seriously, you're spot on that this is proving to be a farce. Either decide now on a Pay TV contract or broadcast them all on free to air!

The Age agrees that an announcement is on the way!:

This whole thing has gone beyond a joke. I just splashed out on a PVR with digital tuner using $$$ I could have used for foxtel on the understanding that all games will be FTA and I could record them.

Now I will have to stump up for foxtel...............Not happy!

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
