I don't understand why anyone at the club had to make public statements about Jack leaving, well before any deal had been done.  They should have repeated over and over "Jack is a contracted player", and then kept all the real conversations behind closed doors.

What happens now if he ends up staying cos a deal doesn't get over the line?  The club has basically announced that we don't want him at the club.  That sort of talk can even further damage the bloke, and further hurt his chances of bouncing back and finding some fresh motivation in 2018.  All that might be OK, except for the fact that we are still paying him a fortune, and that he can still be a top 5 player for the club.

I don't believe the club has ever said (like Stringer) that he was never welcome back. You can analyise it to death but the club just said look at all your options.

They never said don't come back.

The rest is media/demonland hysteria

This is true, but they also went on to make comment as to why they want him to explore their options. That gets out in the media, rumors fly around other clubs and that is why things can sour.  The suggestion he didn't prepare well, or hasn't got the most out of his ability etc. There is generally only one way to perceive that.... and if everything is rosy you wouldn't have asked him to explore his options in the first place.

I don't think those saying the club has handled this badly are referring to the decision, but the implementation of it (whatever one thinks of either issue).

Or those who are upset at the decision are using the perception of poor handling to muddy the waters.

My concern is that two or three new posters have gone further. They've introduced unsubstantiated allegations to make the club look bad because (I would assume) they're more attached to Jack than the club. I don't like how these posters have fuelled the fire so to speak and loyal supporters of this club (at an emotional time) have been manipulated.

Agree, but the suggestion he was thrown out and told to never set foot in the club again is plain wrong.

I've said this earlier but we don't know the exact reasons why he was asked to look at other options. As you said there were some suggestions in the media but I don't think we have the whole story.

Correct, am agreeing with you @Goodvibes

Without solid evidence one way or another it looks like Trolls have sucked some in.

This is not a pretty break up by any means, but saying one side is more wrong then the other side is just stupid (without actual facts)

The last time I felt like this was during the last days of Gutnick at the club. It's why I started posting on Demonology all those years ago. This has a similar feel although I'm still hopeful that once the trade happens of both parties have the opportunity to speak, we'll learn more and move on. I'm also hoping Mahoney makes another last day trade deal that reaffirms everyone's faith in the footy department.

Brendan McCartney has had a big hand in ridding the club of Watts. It's not Goodwin or Viney that have put a line through him. Macca was the person driving it. Has a track record of doing it too.

Hope this is not the case as that would be the second time we have been bent over by an overachieving multiple premiership country coach (didn't he and that [censored] idiot neeld both coach Grovedale, Greensborough, Geeelong west, Geelong East, Gariwerd, Gnanjup, Goulbourn Valley or Gonadsville or something like that, starting with a G?)

Closest to the Pin - How many pages will this thread get to by 2.00pm Thursday or confirmation of a trade being done.

I'm going with 264 pages.

Depends, hopefully at 5pm today the deal is done, then we can open a new thread Good Bye Jack Watts that will be another 200 pages

No I don't believe there is.  You, @beelzebub and others are jumping at shadows.

The club has been transparent about the reasons for trading Jack Watts and those reasons have been telegraphed all year long.  Jack doesn't show the expected commitment and preparation required and does not set a good example to the rest of the list.  The membership deserves and commands a truthful explanation when such a popular player is moved on - and the club have delivered.  I don't believe that has diminished Jack's trade value at all - clubs know what is what.  But even if it has, the backlash from the membership to a "surprise" trade would have been far more damaging.

I'll be very sorry to see Jack go, he's undeniably charismatic and seems to be a genuinely well-balanced person.  But success in professional sports demands more than this.  I hope Jack goes on to have success elsewhere (as long as it's not at MFC expense) and will always wish him well.

Incorporating 150 pages advising that we got royally  screwed in the trade.

But such is life.

I've enjoyed you're contributions @Goodvibes, please keep them up. Tough decisions are never ever easy. But like Gutnick I am sure there are good reasons for every decision.

You don't employ good people ie (Jackson etc) and not trust their decisions.

The most interesting aspect about all this for me.... And I am not sure that anyone has spoken about this yet.

But the FD are employed to make the tough decisions. They're jobs are on the line with every decision, every game and every player move and so forth. So for people to question the decision to trade Watts (which I think is allowed, but I'm saying where these discussion have descended in to spiteful allegations), it's something that needs a bit of substance before the serious allegations are made. The need to discredit people with no evidence what so ever is very worrying.

I'm not saying people are wrong for questioning FD decisions, but they have nothing on the line. So without evidence these serious allegations just show how out of touch people are. Why would they (the FD) sabotage their own jobs and reputations??

Are erros made from time to time - no doubt, but to say they are not representing the Club's best interest are plain wrong, ans show the lack of knowledge in how management works

Goodwin stated they have encouraged Jack to explore other opportunities....when he is not even half way through his current contract.  I would say that's sending a very clear message that the club is happy for him to move on.

My question is, how are these public comments helpful?  Surely these conversations could remain private until a deal is actually inked?

Because if they didn't say anything then you'd complain about not being informed.

I couldn't disagree more - imagine the outrage among Jack's many fans if all of a sudden he's announced traded.

All the Watts lovers are under an illusion that there is something more going on. They can't face the reality that he's been nothing more than a depth player for 9 seasons (1 decent season) and has been dropped most seasons because he doesn't go hard at the ball.

Jack played some good games this year, and some average ones. But his delisting has been quick and cold

something else is in the mix, i don’t know what it is. But i don’t believe what the media is saying either.

Watts roaming around Alberton a week before the trade period began, would have been a dead giveaway. You would still have the same questions being asked of the club and player.

It's Game Day and the Demons are once again faced with a classic 8 point game against a traditional rival on King's Birthday at the MCG. A famous victory will see them reclaim a place in the Top 8 whereas a loss will be another blow for their finals credentials.

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie
