My understanding is that the following are out of contract in October  and unsigned at the moment.

·         Frost

·         Vince

·         Hulett

·         Kennedy

·         M. King

·         Trengove

·         Spencer

·         Vandenberg

Rookies

·         Filipovic

·         White

·         Maynard

Frost – Has trade value and seems to be on the outer after spending the last few matches at Casey. As a lot have speculated, may end up as part of the play for Lever. If we cannot get lever or there is no value for money to trade him, I would keep.

Vince – Would sign up for another season. Play him as required but give him a mentor role with a few of the young players on the list.

Hulett – is a tough one for me. Not seen him play but I do like his size. Borderline delist. If they can see an upside then persist but he has been on the list long enough for the coaching team to know what they have got.

Kennedy – Delist. If we cannot play him in any game this season after the injuries we had and the numbers he racked up at Casey then there is a problem.

M.King – Sign him up for 2 more

Trengove – Delist

Spencer – See what happens with his RFA status. We managed without him after his injury and do not see value in keeping him. We know exactly what he might bring to the team and we worked around it.

Vandenberg – another year to see how he comes back from his injury.

ROOKIES

Filipovic – sign on for another year for development

White – Delist. Has not seemed to develop this season.

Maynard – Elevate to main list.

Of the players whose contracts end at the end of next season, Kennedy-Harris and Kent might have some trade value. Johnstone and McKenna will have to develop and show something. The rookies contracted till the end of next year Keilty to develop further and seems to be tracking well. Tim Smith had an unlucky year with injuries and will need a good run at it next season. Garland? No idea what they may do with him. If it was up to me I would look at buying out his contract and delisting him.

Summary;

Delist – Kennedy, Trengove, White (R), Hulett (possible), Vandenberg (possible), Garland (Possible)

Elevate – Maynard, J Smith

Trade value – Frost, Kent, Kennedy-Harris (?) Bugg(?)

Bye bye Kennedy you spud. Never trade with Collingwood ever again please, they screw us every time.

Hear hear. Dunno about Kennedy but my god I never want to trade with Collingwood again. In my worst nightmares I see Old Plankhands dropping marks, Prince gazing longingly into the mirror and Howe taking species.

Garland is contracted for next year. He can't/won't be delisted.

Only possibility for creating space is that he retires or asks for a transfer (to a lower league one would presume), but chance of that happening when he has a contract is pretty well zero.

White has been on the rokie list for 3 yrs, like the other King we had,he will be delisted. Not sure what value T.Smith and Keilty are to the club. Perhaps Fritsch from Casey may get pick up by the Dees.

Some of you need to learn show some respect.

These guys are working their arses off for this club - they all want to succeed, and I expect they want to succeed at the MFC.

Sure, some of them aren't quite good enough, or haven't showed quite enough, or are past their used by date. But, for a period of time, they have served this club, they have sweated for this club. Surely this is to be respected.

For those of you who seem to take some weird glee each year in the delisting thread, pull your heads in. I expect many of you don't even know what the inside of a weights room looks like, nor would you look any of these players in the eye when delivering such harsh criticism.

They are not cattle. Rather, they're footballers who've represented this club, some of whom may potentially represent it for a few years to come.

Fair dinkum.

Most of them I would think will be around in 2018 and beyond. It will take a month or two for rational thought to re enter Demonland RB.

Funny that one game back people were still confidently talking finals and perhaps as far as the third week. Now it seems 90% of the team are bums who could not get a kick in a football factory.

@CHF Really balanced summary. Want to add what I can do this.

Frost – Word is he wants to see what happens with Lever before committing. Agree. If Lever isnt there, sign for 3 years, if he is, then he is entitled to find another home where he can play week in week out.

Vince – Will sign a year contract, like he will every year before he decides his time is up.

Hulett – He has gotten better in the last 4 weeks and if he can put together a good finals series I see a rookie spot for him.

Kennedy – Try and find a home for him. Too good not to be on a list somewhere. Hasnt worked at the Dees, maybe at Carlton.

M.King – Agree with another 2.

Trengove – Help him find another club because he deserves it if he wants it.

Spencer – He has been offered a 1 year contract if he cannot find another home. I'm happy with that.

Vandenberg – word is he is holding out on his contract and wants to test the waters. So if he does decide to stay it should be a 2 year without any worries. Expect him to go to somewhere he feels he can play AFL week in week out.

ROOKIES

Filipovic – sign on for another year for development

White – Sadly I see him going and Hulett taking his spot.

Maynard – Elevate to main list.

Everything being equal and people finding better opportunities that leaves us with

In: J. Smith, Maynard, Lever, 3 picks at the draft table (Andrew Brayshaw, Hamish Brayshaw, ???)

Out: Lamumba, Kennedy, Trengove, Spencer, Vandenberg, Frost

I think it could be a very quiet year for us come trade and draft week.

I'd want to see what happens with Vandenberg's foot before committing to a contract with him and I'm sure other clubs would too.

Assuming that we lose Spencer which is looking more and more likely for me, do you reckon that if we pull off a trade to get rid of Kent and to get Tabener that we could maybe convert him into a Forward/ Ruck role to give Gawn a solid back up who will be a threat to all defences in the league.

Well aware that there are a lot of variables that will need to go to plan for this to end up working out, but how many of you believe that this would help a possible finals assault for us next season?!

I am beginning to suspect that you are in fact, a homesick Matt Taberner

Not a delisting and not about a player but Sam McClure is reporting Collingwood is making a big play for Craig Jennings.  I think he is still contracted to us but is very highly regarded in the industry.

He was hand picked by Goodwin and McCartney so I sure hope Jennings stays the distance with us!

What again was his expertise ?

Am I reading too much into the fact that Frost is listed as an 'out' in the teams listed for Casey's first final?

Is he injured? Or has he been told we won't be offering him a contract for next year and he'll be traded..

Is it possible he is not eligible to play finals, in that he didn't play enough games?

Very much hope he's happy with us and stays.

Devils advocate...what does he do, what has he done. How are we benefited  by him staying. Im just asking Cheers

Good point, didn't think of that.

Just a tip for everyone trying to trade out our VFL players for draft picks - it's not going to happen. Players like Vandenberg, Kent, Kennedy, Spencer & Bugg have zero value. We might let them walk for pick 100 just to get them a new home, but that would be it.

If you want quality, you have to give up quality. Frost may have some value. Salem may have some value. I can't see too many others being considered expendable unless the deal of the century comes along.

Don't agree,... completely

I think Kent, Spencer, JKH, etc .... they all have some 'currency', others such as Kennedy perhaps not as much.

I still think that Trenners could get a place @ another club,... but thats just a left field guess!

For those who are wanting to trade Salem - why is this?

Sam Frost is not eligible to play for Casey in the finals.

He has value.

I don't necessarily want to trade him but we aren't going to get the likes of Josh Kelly by offering Dean Kent.

Ironically, the only hope we have of getting Josh Kelly is if he wants to play with his mate Salem.

Despite a spirited third quarter surge, the Demons have slumped to their worst start to a season since 2012, remaining winless and second last on the ladder after a 39-point defeat to Essendon at Adelaide Oval in Gather Round.

It’s Game Day, and the Demons are staring down the barrel of an 0-5 start for the first time since 2012 as they take on Essendon at Adelaide Oval for Gather Round. In that forgettable season, Melbourne finally broke their drought by toppling the Bombers. Can lightning strike twice? Will the Dees turn their nightmare start around and breathe life back into 2025?

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the  Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measly 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie?  Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG.
