End of year delistings

Featured Replies

FD are starting to plan for 2018.

My understanding is that we need a minimum of 3 free spots.

Definite outs:

Lumumba

Contract ending 2017:

VandenBerg, Kennedy, JKH, Hulett, Mitch King, White, Tim Smith, Trengove

Have no idea how Garland got 3 years. Contract ends 2018.

I'm thinking: Lumumba, Kennedy, Hulett and White.

Trengove might get rookie listed or traded for a late round pick.

Thoughts?

An Adelaide friend said that the word is that Kennedy is homesick wants to return to SA.

Does anyone know if we are anticipating any father/son selections this year?

at this stage here's what i'd be doing in terms of list management strategy for existing list:

salem - must retain
neal-bullen - hopefully signed to a new deal
vince - i just wonder...will he retire? otherwise a year contract i guess
joel smith - upgraded off rookie list

kent - i reckon he might be put up for trade and someone will want him
harmes - someone will want him i reckon but i hope we keep him
vandenberg - he's talented but his body isn't made for football; dropped off list
jkh - put up for trade or potentially downgraded to rookie list / dropped off list
spencer - depends on whether we trade for a ruck or just keep him as insurance or he might want to give it away or give somewhere else a go

lumumba - retired (obviously)
trengove - retired
hulett - dropped off list
kennedy - dropped off list*
white - dropped off rookie list
keilty - dropped off rookie list

*although it would seem kennedy is contracted so i guess he stays; needs to get a game and show something soon, so he needs a bit of luck to go his way and so far anb, bugg and kent are all ahead of him

Too soon?

Lumumba, JKH, White, Hulett to be rookied listed or delisted. That would be my guess.

- Lumumba obviously gone before season even started.
- JKH doesn't have any weapons and won't make it. At AFL level, he isn't quick, he doesn't get much ball, he doesn't put much pressure on and he doesn't hit the scoreboard. Gone.
- White is behind a plethora of half back flankers and won't pass them to become best 22. Gone.
- Hulett hasn't set the world on fire, been tried as both forward and back. If he couldn't crack a game when we had all the injuries and were given debut games to rookie listed first year players (T Smith) ahead of him, then says a lot about where is he rated. Will either be rookied for depth due to his size, more likely he is Gone.

-Tim Smith first year on list, will get another.
-Vandenberg is good depth for another few years both up forward and midfield, but not sure he will be in our long term plans. Will be re-signed, probably for 2 years.
-Kennedy is similar to JKH except he is quicker, wins more ball and hits the scoreboard. Decent depth for our small forwards if injury strikes.
-Trengove I have no idea about. Realistically he is probably gone, but it just seems such a waste of talent. The guy has had a horrible run with injury and having extra pressure heaped on him as a kid in terms of responsibility and leadership. His first few years were right up there as some of the best I remember, was neck and neck with Dustin Martin but had leadership value also. Then captaincy and injury destroyed him. Shame to see such a hard working positive guy get cut down. He will truly be one of the worst cases of a good Melbourne player cut down by injury.

Trade for Lever....win/win

Only kidding 'hemingway', but this is how a lot of fans see trade and value.

Second year player and frankly from what I've seen at Casey has shown more than Weideman.  Silly to delist a second year tall KP forward after 2 years.

Of course this is subject to attitude and other things which only the FD really know.  Prima facie he's a keeper for at least a year.

Agreed Robbie57.

Normally this thread pops up when our season is a write-off with nothing to look forward to except the draft and the trade period.

We are still well and truly in this season.  Lets save the delist/trades/draft threads for another few months please.

We still have a lot too look forward to!  Go Dees.

Has spent a fair bit of time injured, hasn't he?

Not too sure the FD have the same mindset as you. Mid season is a perfect time to asses the list.

It's never too soon. I start thinking about it before round 1 usually. It's fun to see how my own view changes as the season unfolds.

Rather surprised Hulett is on many's list for chop. A bit early maybe.

Harry finally leaves our hallowed halls... following his physical self who may or may not ever been here

Trenners must surely be facing crunch time. I really wish him well. A fine exponent of self belief and application. Respect this fellow.

BK must be doubtful starter in 18.

A number may get offers, ( to move ) JKH...Kent.  AVB may or may not be seen as depth.

I could see Bernie staying another year.

The question...how many spots do we need ? Might dictate who goes...when.

I would rather he stays but I fear the club might make a tough call on VDB and delist him due to his constant injuries.

Not a chance.

If the club is currently targeting opposition players to recruit, they'd be doing the sums as to what cap space is required. They'd have a fair idea as to which players are in the firing line.

And for what it's worth: Lumumba, JKH, Kennedy, White and Trengove to go. 5 is a pretty reasonable turnover. [ed: forgot White was only on the rookie list. Four changes to the senior list might be underdoing it.]

Hulett or King will only go if we need spots, and only with the intention of being rookie listed. Otherwise they'll be given time as developing talls.

vanders will be signed for another two, or one if the injury prognosis is really grim. Has too high a ceiling to give up on him yet.

Tim Smith for a second year on the rookie list if he doesn't do enough for a promotion to the senior list in the back half of the season.

Isn't Pedersen up again this year? Thought he only signed for one. He's a year by year proposition, but at this stage I'm leaning towards keeping him while there is so much uncertainty around our development talls.

Edited by Nasher

Mitch White is still only a rookie anyway, so that needs to be factored in when discussing in/outs

The way a lot of contracts run i don't know cap space will factor for 2-3 years. Theres a window to get 'filler' types as FA etc for the interim.

Interesting times await at end of season.

Trengove to work his way back into the side for the Grand Final and hold the cup with Norm Smith medal around his neck, breaking the Norm Smith curse.

Recruitment will be looking past that ;)

I'd certainly want to see what level Hulett reaches by season's end.

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

I suppose that I should apologise for the title of this piece, but the temptation to go with it was far too great. The memory of how North Melbourne tore Melbourne apart at the seams earlier in the season and the way in which it set the scene for the club’s demise so early in the piece has been weighing heavily upon all of us. This game was a must-win from the club’s perspective, and the team’s response was overwhelming. The 36 point win over Alastair Clarkson’s Kangaroos at the MCG on Sunday was indeed — roovenge of the highest order!

  • CASEY: Werribee

The Casey Demons remain in contention for a VFL finals berth following a comprehensive 76-point victory over the Werribee Tigers at Whitten Oval last night. The caveat to the performance is that the once mighty Tigers have been raided of many key players and are now a shadow of the premiership-winning team from last season. The team suffered a blow before the game when veteran Tom McDonald was withdrawn for senior duty to cover for Steven May who is ill.  However, after conceding the first goal of the game, Casey was dominant from ten minutes in until the very end and despite some early errors and inaccuracy, they managed to warm to the task of dismantling the Tigers with precision, particularly after half time when the nominally home side provided them with minimal resistance.
