needs at least another year in the gym and some good coaching from our forward coach

I hated Oscar at the beginning of the year. Believe in player development.

He's only 2 preseasons in, and he has shown an ability to dominate at VFL level. 

Some big blokes take a while. Maxy took 7 years. I'd say if he's playing like this in a year then we should be concerned, but I think if he can improve his endurance he could be anything. 

Once he feels like he 'belongs' it could really help him too. Don't forget he missed almost all of his footy 2 years ago - so psychologically he came in wondering.

For someone who was drafted for his marking prowess I'm yet to see it. His goalkicking is sloppy too. Another cement hands Dawes on our hand she possibly.

If he was 4 years in, then it's a valid discussion.

The kid is barely 2 years into his career - no doubt he is struggling at AFL level, but some of these players take time, not to mention one that came off a full year of injuries in his final TAC Cup season.

Give him some time.  He deserves it.

Plus, he didn't ask for someone like Watts to drop the ball.  He was given a chance because others weren't taking theirs.

On the glimpses we saw of Sam in 2016, I was hopeful we would see him become an AFL regular in mid-2018. On what we saw today, he is still two years away.

He made one great tackle and kicked one point. That is the total of his contribution. As a young developing player, if he doesn't take marks, and kick goals, so be it. But he just doesn't get in the right position, doesn't attack the contest and doesn't impact the game.

His instructions in the second half should have been to play a defensive role on Carlisle, but the coach had so little faith that he spent most of the half on the bench. It was a horrible decision to play him, and he needs to go back to Casey and play a big role in their finals campaign to get his confidence back up.

I'll give him the time as he deserves.

I was more interested in Goodwins appraisal of him given that it was probably worse than what Watts gave us before being dropped.

Too early to say. Currently gets pushed out of the contest too easily. Needs more leg and core strength. He'll get there. Revisit this in 2 years

I think he needs a couple more pre season before we can judge him, it looks like his body may take some time to develop.

He has potential though 

He still just looks so raw.

Way to early to be judging the kid so harshly. He's still just a boy who doesn't even need to shave yet.

he needs time, patience and protein but I'm confident he'll get there.

Not my style Steve. Happy for him to succeed in time. Games, preseasons and belief will get him there. Does get pushed around too easily atm though

6 disposals, 4 clangers- not good enough IMO.

He looked better last year then he has this year imo, which is heartening, but concerning at the same time.

At the very least, he did bring the ball to ground and competed well, and as much as people like to look at the stats sheet, it does count for something.

He had that game in Adelaide, where he barely got his hands on it, but was actually instrumental in the win due to his defensive efforts.

But he will need to develop more than that to make it long term.

 The will) be alright he was asked to be the number 1 forward today most second year key forwards are not ready for that, when hogan played in round 1 and 2 the weed had more impact as the 3nd forward, starting next year hopefully he gets more games with hogan playing with him.

I can't argue that his impact on the game wasn't minimal, as it was exactly that.  If Watts was playing with the required intensity then he doesn't play - but he's obviously been doing what is asked of him at VFL level and was given an opportunity.  Thankfully, no harm done.

I think the appraisal is down to him being a young kid - if he was 24/25 and in the system for a while, would he feel as though he could be a little more harsh about his performance?  Weideman has struggled at AFL level this year and getting harsh words, in public, from Goodwin would do no one any good.  He needs to build up his confidence at this stage of his career as much as he can.

Not worried in the slightest about him in the long run. I've said it before that he's shown he's capable of every facet of the game, in different games. 

And the way our forward line functions is rubbish, even when we're flying. How many times do we ever hit a key forward on the lead? It's not the easiest of gigs for him to step in to.

Goody isn't going to bag him out in the media. Don't think it was necessary about comparing Watts with what Weideman can bring. Think the issue was more so what Watts was bringing compared to what he is capable of. Why wasn't Hulett given a chance instead or is he on the rookie list?

We've all got eyes, but I trust Jason Taylor's eyes much more than mine. Hasn't got one wrong yet, and I'm confident in 12-18 months we will have a player taking us to our next flag

Needs to dominate at VFL level for at least a couple of games.

He had one good game against Box Hill and has had around 3 good quarters otherwise.

At VFL he gets put into the ruck because he is getting "cold" as a forward.

Has a long way to go and hopefully we see him demand a place in 2018.

He also needs to work very hard on his running patterns if he is going to make it. Have a look at how hard Daniher works. Darcy Moore is another one who is showing slow improvement but the absence of an alternative sees him playing at AFL level every week.

Weed is going to be a good player for us. However I still say it was crazy to bring him in now. Surely if Goodwin wants to make a statement to Jack he should find another way. Last week Jack had 10 touches and 1 goal in AFL (including goal assists). Sam had 9 touches and 1 goal in the VFL. How that was ever going to be a receipe for success is beyond me. Its one thing to look at a player and say he is not performing to the required level and its another thing to say who could do better. Oh that's right at the moment we don't have anyone who will be better. Hulett is even further from being ready..

From memory he missed of the preseason in his 1st year and agree he still too skinny for AFL. With a bigger body he wll get there.
