What is AFLX?

• Played on a soccer-sized oval
• Played between two sides of seven, three on each interchange bench
• Ten-minute quarters
• No centre bounces (kick-ins from full-back after each goal)
• One umpire

Melbourne ruckman Max Gawn said he liked the plan, but hoped he wouldn’t be playing at the launch competition.

"If I’m not playing finals, and Melbourne don’t make finals, it would be a great concept," he said on Thursday night.

"I wouldn’t mind the IPL format, where you can go play for a different team … if you look at the IPL and the Big Bash, the guys love the Vic Bushrangers but some of the guys end up playing for the Queensland Twenty20 team.”

If we a playing finals yes; if we don't play finals then no. Sorry i just don't want any of our boys getting injured; and out for months or even the year.

I think the concept is OK but it would need to be played on something larger than soccer pitch sized. A marked kick out from full back could see the player lining up for a shot on goal. Guys like Lynden Dunn would be worth their weight in gold.

Dustin Fletcher may make a comeback as a fullback and leading goal kicker. Will look hot in lingerie too.

I didn't like Max suggesting he'd like to play for another team, besides Melbourne..panel challenged him on it. Poor comment. Not well thought out

would prefer to see it at VFL level with perhaps some marquee players from AFL

The Big Bash has been a wonderful thing for State level cricketers from both a monetary and exposure perspective

Sounds like a [censored] idea. The ball will be kicked long from full back to full forward on loop. Will be boring uninspired viewing.

Silly Party

No for current players due to potential injuries in a mickey mouse contest. Sounds like it could have some merit with retired players and VFL players. It would be a bit of fun for the retired blokes and exposure for the up and coming guys. 

I like the idea of a womens all star game that weekend as well.

That's true. But has it been good for cricket? Is it cannibalising interest in the other forms of cricket to the detriment of the long-term future of the game? Conversely, could it be cricket's saviour? Personally, I think cricket is in huge trouble with declining interest and the possibility of a huge drop in TV rights money. I don't think the Big Bash has been the sole cause of cricket's demise...but I do think it is masking cricket's real problems. 

I'm not a fan of AFLX because as much as I love the real game, I think scarcity of the product (by having a real off-season) enhances the love of the game when it is in season. I know that in the last few weeks the over-saturation of football by having Thursday night games has actually diminished my interest, not increased it, like I suspect the AFL and Channel 7 had hoped.

Do you know what's even bigger than the Big Bash? The AFL.

Why the biggest sporting organisation in the country would look to emulate smaller sporting competitions has me confused.

The modern shorter formats that have been launched for pre-existing sports such as cricket and rugby tend to work I believe as they give more of what the fans want e.g. higher scoring rate, fast paced, lots of boundaries, wickets, and close competitive matches as teams typically can't be bowled out.

AFL is well paced as it is especially with the rule changes that have come in over time. Image the AFLX will endeavour to be even more fast paced and have rules that are designed to keep the footy alive for as long as possible. There should also be more opportunities to run and carry and less stoppages with a higher scoring rate. The down side might be that we lose the marking as there won't be many packs forming and also less 'contests within an contest'.

There will probably be a market for it for someone although not sure the likely mix of attributes above will work from me. Have seen short formats of aussie rules played at corporate sports carnivals and I didn't find it that interesting. Will still give it a chance though.

Any time you include potential injuries to players, you know it'll get shouted down.

Only way it can work is if it's only put on for obscure players, or recent draftees. VFL players possibly looking for a shot at the big time. If that's the case then sure, I'd watch. Wouldn't pay to see it though.

Insecure? I just think it's odd that he suggested that he wouldn't care if he played with Melbourne or not. Seemed an odd comment.

perhaps an FA cup format where smaller suburban clubs can pay into the pot and then move along the chain.

Cannot see it being worth big money to the winner unless a TV station buys the rights. If that is Foxtel it will have minimum exposure.

Perhaps it could be the birth of a pay to view internet streaming product
