I thought complaining on the internet was the pharma-free alternative?

Maybe, but for some it clearly doesn't work.

This thread now has a poll because I needed a new homepage poll and polls don't lie.

I voted too early to tell because it factually and mathematically is.

When we're a locked in and confirmed final 8 team I will be start dreaming.

I don't want to be a negative [censored], but I don't see us developing a level of consistency this year that will get us there.

I don't see it either, which sort of excites me.

Cos I just have the strangest feeling.

I bet that if we enter an era of sustained success, the traffic here will steadily taper off.

Is that when we can sign up to and start trolling other clubs supporters forums?

To put it another way, who are the contenders this season?

GWS, Dogs, Crows would be the top rung

Port, WCE a rung below that

Then Cats, Freo and us as outsiders and I'd say we should even be in the group above. Maybe Swans in this group if they roll the Saints tomorrow.

Tigers and saints no chance

So are we a strong chance? Are we a genuine contender at this stage? No. But we are an outside chance in an even season and we are a contender. None of the teams above us have done anything to scare/impress me so far.

Would anyone be happy if St Kilda won the flag this year?

Other than Saints fans ?

Interesting suggestion though. They can play ok against the favourite.

The biggest roller coaster is not the team's form - it's supporters' emotions on this site.

vs Adelaide was clearly our best but we were very good against St.Kilda and Geelong.  If Hawthorn and Freo is our worst then we are in very good shape, I don't think it is the worst we'll play this year and I'm not optimistic about our 3 consecutive 6 day breaks with a trip to Perth in the middle following the break.  There'll be some below par performance in that stretch.

I think the injury set backs we've had could be good for our medium term flexibility.  If we can make the finals then we could win the flag - it is a very weak year.  The close losses to both Freo and Hawthorn are going to make it tough though.  To make the eight we'll need to get on a roll and that could well continue in the finals.

I'm bullish about a flag by 2019.

Why?

It seemed like every man and his dog were happy for the Dogs to win a flag (I personally couldn't give a stuff unless it's us winning it). Just wondering if the Saints would receive the same sentiment this year, as per the Dogs winning it from nowhere.

Fair enough. I think you can gauge my answer!!

By rd 13 ( every team has played 12 games) my prediction is GWS,Adelaide,W.c 8 w 4 L ;P.Adel,W.b,St.k,Melb,Geel,Rich,Freo 7 w 5 L;Ess 6 w 6L,Haw,Swans,Coll 5w 7L;North,Carl,GC 4w 8 L,Brisb 2w 10 L. If we can achieve what I said in my above ladder,we should be able to make the 8. We have to beat North this w/e and hopefully we can get back Gawn,J.Smith,Hogan and perhaps V.B.

is this thread for real? we are a contender for finals, maybe a 50-50 chance but no we are not a contender for the flag.  we couldnt beat the tiges/hawks/freo/cats at home.

A good point i reckon. Good for the players to play new roles but also for the coaches to have extend themselves and come up with creative options and decisions.

It has also meant that more players have been given AFL time and exposure than would have been the case if we had less injured.

That said it goes without saying it will be great to have Gawn back. Having to do so much rucking has impacted on how dangerous Watts has been. He has been ok this year and I've loved his endevour and dare i say it his intensity (loved hearing 'crunching tackle from Watts' in the call form the crows game) but we need his class in our forward line

Its interesting in a fashion. Notoriously , in the past, as Melbourne have accounted for a few teams, sometimes against the tide , we've failex to back it up. Hence the birth of many derisive comnentaries  of wbich a common theme is ' getting ahead of ourselves".

Unless we continue to play fully and to our abilities, taking scalps along the way , then threads like this only mirror our failings.

For mine its way too early to be getting carried away. Yes some games were close , and we might have won , but we didn't.

Much 'contender' talk reminds me of Real Estate speake whereby if one were to get on the roof , hang off the chimney, squint hard you 'might' sea water...presto Home with Bay Views !!

The reality is .... there's a fair way to go.

Acid test this week.

We just have to win at least two of our next three and then go to another level when we get Gawn and Hoges back.

I would love to see the Saints win a flag (just not at our expense).

Would be great to see the Tigers get one too, as long as we get one first. I could handle seeing the Dogs get another as well.

We've probably had the most consistent form in the comp other than the Bulldogs. Haven't had a truly bad performance yet. Crows did against us, Giants did against Crows.

Now watch us stink it up against North lol

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
