A big fish

Roos:

"If you look at GWS and Melbourne they have more depth. Melbourne has Lewis and Hogan out but still has talent in reserves like Kent and Brayshaw," Roos said.

"They haven't got a marquee that gobbles up a lot of the salary cap. Whoever goes after Fyfe if he does leave Freo will have the same problem."

We will likely have a similar problem retaining our stars as they reach their peak. eg. Hogan, Clary

Hope we stay away from any 'big fish' in the next few years. In the past I was hoping we'd be able to snare a player on a big contract, but that was when I and many others had lost the faith in the club to draft well or develop any of our own players. Both of those aspects have changed immensely and our young talent is amazing. Bottom line, it's far more important we ensure we have enough space in the cap to hold onto these guys, who are going to be very good players.

We have the talent now, we don't need a big fish. We do however need leadership. Whether that's bringing in another Jordan Lewis type or drafting more kids with leadership skills, it's something we still lack when games are in the balance.

Hogan will likely command a big wage in the future (he probably does already), but if we keep building like we are he will stay and we will have enough to keep our core together.

I'm not sure we can improve on what we have without breaking the bank and then having a potential domino effect on retaining other players.  Some might suggest Steven May, but he would come at a huge price and one I'm not so willing to pay.  What else is out there that is readily available?  Lever?  He may come at a cost as well.  I know you have to pay to get the quality, but i'm not so sure we need to.

I'd settle for any player with an IQ over 20.

Yeah I know, but what Iam talking about is our inability from time began to get an established "A" grade fit, strong, not over the hill champion that has years ahead of him. We have never ever have been able to do it! Probably never will !

My thinking has changed.

Not convinced a big fish is healthy for our progress forward. Some key medium fish (May, Lever?) a couple of Lewis-like aged leaders and retention of our young guns is the key.

Not Dusty, not Fyfe on inflated coin. No way.

I'd like 2 big leadership fish. Not big fish, but LEADERS!

Too many tight games lost from lack of composure and leadership.

Our 'big fish' should be Steven May. One of the best key defenders in the league, leadership skills, competitive, aggressive. He should be our number 1 target. He would improve us so much structurally. Imagine him down back directing traffic while nullifying their best forward. It would free up guys like Hunt, Hibberd and Frost to run off half back more as they would have to get back less to help out. It would mean Tmac would not need to be number 1 defender, so he can then play more to his strengths and intercept more. It would mean we don't need Oscar out there costing us goals every week and his teammates needing to bust their ass to help cover whoever his man is at the time. I reckon getting a good key defender like May would improve us drastically.

He also has the illustrious record of getting Campbell Brown 'retired' from AFL football.

    GAMEDAY: Rd 13 vs Collingwood

It's Game Day and the Demons are once again faced with a classic 8 point game against a traditional rival on King's Birthday at the MCG. A famous victory will see them reclaim a place in the Top 8 whereas a loss will be another blow for their finals credentials.

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie
