As at 11am.

The lower green band to the left of Melbourne is trending down and across and looks like it will miss the G.  It's the bands above it that worry me as their trajectory is more in line with the city.  It's hard to know how heavy or what time it will come through.  My guess is there will be some rain, but probably not for the entire game.

Good to see you getting some research done on Tim Membrey PD :P

Based on that the weather should be ok tonight, not storms. We need to turn it into a more contested game as Richmond are quicker than us on the outside and have based their game on the run and pressure of the mosquito fleet. Jetta and Hunt will be super important tonight to keep Rioli and Butler in check.

Our entry into 50 is so important.  We get this right, we shoot for goal.  We screw it up, Richmond will play long and fast to their small forwards, making it difficult to set/maintain defensive structures.  I see this as critical for our outcome, and where Hogan and Smith will add significantly.  Looking for the second link in the chain to cut out and contest (often leaving the first short pass to be uncontested) could be difficult if their long passing gameplanbypasses this.  Hard 2 way running is going to be a premium skill tonight.

Looking for us to win the clearances, tidy up inside 50 delivery.  Reckon they will get a few goals that catch us out of position and make us look ameteur,  see us pulling away in the 3rd and holding them off in the 4th.

The only good thing about not playing on the weekend was that it wasn't ruined by the MFC.

Mondays suc anyway so if we lose that just adds to a great start to the week.

But here's another weather predictor from last night that is far less positive:

Back in our glory days ... (remember some of those few years in the 90's and thereabouts) I would love a Friday night game (win) so it allowed you to enjoy the weekend while watching other teams slog it out.

Somehow I cannot remember such a feeling for many many years

Agree with most of the sentiments on here. Reckon it will rain pretty heavily later on, but mostly after the game. Also think Trac and Hoges and Jeffy will have big games rain, hail or shine, but a bit of rain should take the edge off the tigres flea brigade. Hope Jayden goes ok with the new AFL endorsed headband...... We,re hearin ya Jay....

Very nervous about this one, think it will be season defining.

Agree, all though I am nervous every game.

Every game is important although I don't think any game is necessarily season defining unless the result is way outside the normal range.

If we lose by a massive margin or win by a massive margin, then that can be season defining. Or if we just get over the line or choke at the end of the season when a place in the 8 is at stake.

It depends how we use the ball, if we over-possess the ball then we will be in trouble.

Agree and please may they go forward quickly and not go sideways and backwards.

Anyone know a good place to park?

Last year we were stuck in the carpark for a good 45mins - 1hr trying to get out. I did see the club were expecting 75,000 tonight - not sure we'll see that after 60K for the last two years and rain expected tonight, but with three small kids coming along I'm keen to find somewhere local to park without the LONG queue to get out afterwards.

At the train station.

I realise it may not suit everyone, but if it's possible it is by far the easiest way in and out of the MCG (unless you live close enough to walk).

Yep, tried that two years ago. With the crush, three small children (8-10 yrs old) get quite claustrophobic in the crush.

Fair point. I'd be worried about young kids at a crowded station, too. But if they've coped with feral Richmond supporters all night, I have faith they'll tough it out.

I have a secret spot, short walk to the G and always get a park there. But if I share, the secret will be spoiled!

Win this game, then get an already tired Essendon who will be coming off a 4 day break.

No excuses, its time to start WINNING.

I reckon a bit of rain favours us.

Our recent record in the rain is atrocious.

We lost to Carlton last year with finals on the line and also lost to Essendon in 2015 who were themselves coming off a 110 point loss to St Kilda the previous week.

However when we played Richmond in 2015, we beat them easily in the second half rain.

Hospital on Grey Street in East Melbourne. Get there about an hour before, though.

Just finished watching last year's game. Thing I noticed about Richmond is that they pretty much kicked all of their goals coming off Melbourne turnovers. I don't think they apply much pressure, they just wait for the mistake. They have perfected it this year so we need to be cleaner with the ball.

I really don't know what to think about this Richmond team. We'll get a look at them tonight. As we will Melbourne.

I hope if it does rain heavily, the players and coaches are smart enough to go to a simplified more direct game style.  In the past we've been exposed in slippery conditions by over possessing the footy.

Yep, this is my biggest concern too. Especially, with the high possession game we play. We took quite a while to adjust to the wet conditions last year. Hawthorn are specialists at this. Just keep the ball moving forward. It puts the opposition under pressure, particularly their defence.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
