Wagner should be back (he's 189cm Col is 191cm, no biggie).

Surely we learnt from rushing Brayshaw back. Wagner has only played half a practiceĀ game... Im sure he will slot back into the team at some point soonish but I hope they dont rush him back supremely underdone for round 1

Hang your head in shame.

Change thread title to: 'we have no backline depth' and its correct. Once we have hibberd back hopefully next week the 22 is fine

but if more injuries to tall/medium backs we are in trouble. The rookies must be licking their lips, Kielty/Smith etc

We have no backline? I'd rather this

B:Ā  person x,Ā Ā Tom McDonald, Neville Jetta

HB:Ā Christian Salem, Oscar McDonald, Bernie Vince

Ā

than this

Ā

B:Ā Lynden Dunn, Ben Reid, Brayden Maynard

HB:Ā Travis Varcoe, Lachie Keeffe, Jeremy Howe

I really feel for Garland, he seems like such a great guy and while I was shocked by has latest three year contract he certainly is handy depth with our already vulnerable backline.

Ā

I know it is with the benefit of hindsight, but makes a case that we should have kept Lumumba on the list, then placed him on long term injury and upgraded a rookie

there was probably a good reason for it, Ā (financial?)

besides we don't have an upgrade problem at the moment. the afl allow 1 free upgrade at start of season plus we have one lti

Person x = Hunt

I'd be rotating Jones and Lewis through a back pocket or flank. Ā We need better decision making and ball skills coming out of the backline.

If the Dogs can win a flag with Joel Hamling and Fletcher Roberts as key backs surely we can devise something to get us through until reinforcement are ready to come back!

Yep now we just need the umps to be ridiculously in our favour too.

oh yes, how could I forget the next superstar... :)

What is the story with Hibberd? I know he had an issue with with his Achilles. What's his progress?

Lingering drug related soft tissue injury?? Ā :-(

I hope this was a big dose of irony!

Don't we just put Garland on the LTI list?

When is Wagner due back? Ā He was so underrated last year, Ā played some damn good footy before tiring later in the year. Ā With Garland gone, Smith unproven and Hibberd carrying an achilles, he becomes an important player for us.

Ā

Isn't it amazing how one clear thinking poster can cut through all the angst and handwringing!

Isn't King on it as well? Or is he a rookie?Ā

Doesn't matter, Saints won't get it past our mids!

We are seriously going in undermanned against Saints next week, how unlucky are we to have 3 CHB go down? Id love to see Joel Smith thrown in the deep end to play on McCartin or Bruce, I think we are screwed in this part of the ground.

i agree.. and even when we do, we don't! must be focus of next trade period..

Ā

There's really no such thing as one on one defence anymore, its all about zoning, "team" defence etc....the Eagles lost a huge chunk of their backline through injury at the start of the 2015 season and ending up playing off the in GF largely due to the "Weagles Web" (stupid name). Similarly the Bulldogs are very hard to score against without having any big name key backs at all.

Ā

I don't think having Garland and Frost/Wagner out is really going to be the difference between us beating St Kilda or not, its about how well we defend the transition at Etihad, implement the zone and most importantly consistently hit targets so we don't get killed on the rebound.Ā

I agree, the team is Ā 22 players, if all play the role they are given, and play it well, there is chance to win

  • REPORT: Richmond

The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle.Ā As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.Ā

  • CASEY: Richmond

The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace. They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.
