I like Hawthorn now.

They gifted us Jordan Lewis. And he is exactly what this team needed. We will play finals this season as a result.

I reckon we'll own Hawthorn this year.

What is the point of the AFL trying to even up the comp.if elite players end up at the elite clubs. If an experience player of 100 games and is considered an elite players (some system would be required to determine eliteness) no longer want to play for their existing club,he should go into the draft with a set asking price. The bottom club get first bite of the cherry and so on.If the player doesn't get picked up in the first round then his price drop by a set amount. The bottom club can use their 2nd rd pick. Other players can also be placed into the system but have less bargaining power. There should be no swapping of draft picks or pre arranged swaps.

AFLPA would never agree to that concept.  They want to increase their freedom to choose where and for whom they 'work' for, this is the trend in most major sports around the world and AFL will be no different.

The Chief, I agree with you ,like all good things (referring to the rich)  eventually they will come crashind down with a thud.

I cant find anything about this and id be surprised if 1) hawthorn wanted someone with as much baggage as Martin and 2) Hawthorn would be able to afford his asking price without upsetting the rest of the playing list

I like it when you talk dirty Ron!

I think he will go to the saints, their whole plan was based around signing a big fish free agent and I think Martin is the only one they're a chance to get.

Because they just got rid of Lewis, Mitchell and Hodge will most likely retire.

Think before you post.

Of course I realise that but thats my point. The very reason teams should fall after sustained success is exqctly that - the talented players retire. Clubs should then fall down the ladder and relad on fresh talent from the draft.

Free agency has killed the system because it allows the clubs who already had talent when it came in to effect, to stay at the top. They use their older stars as currency and continuously 'top up' to stay at the pointy end of the comp.

Your example of mitchell, hodge, lewis leaving should result in hawthorns era ending as they drop down the ladder. not for them to keep swapping out for new guns and remain at the top, like a Man U do in EPL. Its not good for the comp

I've always felt the cap should have some element of reward for player development and retention. Such that if a player, say, is drafted by the club or is with the club by a certain age, after a given number of years that player can be offered x% of their contract outside of the basic cap. And so forth on a sliding scale for years of service at the one club.

I've never seen a monetary figure given for the cost of developing an individual player, but I hate to see clubs lose out on such an investment so easily.

Such as Jordan Lewis at Melbourne. Fits your definition. At least in my imagination.

That's a good idea.  There could be a fixed payment outside the cap - if it's based on the player's contract then it will be open to manipulation.  I think based on games milestones at the club would be better than years because that better reflects player importance - I don't think Jake Spencer should receive a loyalty bonus.  50 games is too early, 100 is a good place to start.

Salary Cap/Number on list (~$300k) bonus at each of 100, 150, 200, 250, 300 games

Probably approached Petracca first, found out he was interested in has beens, then went for Dusty.

Overpriced, talented - but with question marks hanging over him. So one thing is for sure, if he wasn't already at Richmond then Richmond would be chasing him hard!

    TRAINING: Wednesday 15th January 2025

There were a number of Demonland Trackwatchers at Gosch's Paddock this morning to bring you their observations from Preseason Training. KEV MARTIN'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS They were going hard at each other. The sims were in two 15 minute blocks. The second block finished a few minutes early, they gathered and had another 7 minutes at it. I think they were asked to compete, as they would play against an opposition. There was plenty of niggle, between some of them. At the end o

Better late than never … and quite frankly, there’s very little to report other than that training took place at Casey Fields this morning, that Tracc was there nursing his rib injury and that some photographs are on the club’s social media including this one of Clarrie in Raging Bull stance that gives rise for confidence. The other news is that the club has a new train on player in 185cm Dandenong Stingrays midfielder Noah Hibbins-Hargreaves (love the hyphenated name which is just so fitti

Welcome back to Demonland for those like me who have been on vacation. I’m posting this with some trepidation because of a certain amount of uncertainty surrounding the return of preseason training in 2025 after a flurry of weddings including those of our coach, one of our superstar players and a former premiership champion player and bloke, not to mention the recent mysterious incident that occurred on the Mornington Peninsula.  I believe that the team reassembles this morning at Casey Fie

    TRAINING: Monday 16th December 2024

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to
