Fancy Watts trying to be tough by picking on a 2nd year player who weighs 3kgs wet, and completely missing the centre bounce. Silvagni is only 4KG lighter the Jack............ I liked Watts backing his team mates up, even if the cause of the scuffle was incredibly stupid. 1 Quote

Though he seems generally placid on field I would love to see the convolutions, distortions and all round pretzel logic the MRP would dish up to get Martin off if he did a Lewis/Hogan jobbie. One for the ages just like the efforts the old tribunal used to do to help Nathan Buckley out of trouble. Edited April 4, 2017 by america de cali Quote

Mods -- we desperately need a "dislike" button! Anyway, the random way the MRP works, if Clearance is ahead of <whomever the AFL decides should win> no doubt they can find some way to rub him out. Mad_Melbourne 877 Posted April 4, 2017 Posted April 4, 2017 Did anyone else notice the last quarter centre bounce where he shoved Bryce Gibbs over. Whilst Gibbs is not known as the strongest mid, a 2nd year player shoving a seasoned veteran clean over was a testament to his strength. The second thing i noticed was at one stage Charlie Curnow was running with him, I knew straight away Clarry was going to find the football, but I think it's a high amount of praise from Bolton when it was clearly for him to learn and our midfield included Jones, Viney, Tyson and Lewis Quote

The rule is that from the time the umpire commences his approach to bounce no one is allowed to cross the centre square, in or out - regardless if there are too many or too few in the square. thanks louie. what specifically determines the "commences his....."? does the central ump raise an arm? hold the ball above his head? or what Quote

Watts was deep in the scrap with Lewis, the push and shove with Silvagni came on the tail end after Silvagni dragged Watts out of the scrap.. Some people are never happy - Watts too soft, Watts fighting too much. Edited April 5, 2017 by Fifty-5 14 Quote

I have no issues with Watts fighting or standing up to teammates, I do have an issue when he does so and as a result misses his primary job which is to go up in the ruck contest. Oliver won the tap sure, but he could have just as easily not won it, or injured himself trying to battle an experienced ruck etc... It's just not the mature thing to do and I have no doubt Goodwin would have had a go at not just him, but everyone else, including Lewis, who got himself suspended for 3 weeks and Hogan for 2, because they can't control their emotions on the field. Lord Travis 10,819 Posted April 6, 2017 Posted April 6, 2017 (edited) Watts got pulled into a scrap and then the umpire didn't let him into the centre square as he was getting ready for the bounce. Same thing would've happened to Gawn if he was there and no-one would've made a big deal of it. Because it was Watts of course it's being blown out of proportion. Ridiculous. Anyhow, how about that Clayton Oliver kid? Having a ripping year and looks set to become our first elite player in a long long time. If he can maintain his current form while copping the attention that will come his way then he'll be top 20 player in the comp within a year. Love him! Edited April 6, 2017 by Lord Travis 2 Quote

Watts can't take a trick on Demonland, Lord T. -Always criticised for lack of aggression. -Gets aggressive, is in a scap and gets criticised. I don't get why people are so upset about Jack not being at the bounce. Anyone had a look lately, at who Richmond, Geelong etc are nominating (not nominating for a bounce/throw in). And the umpires are confused: giving free kicks away for blocking a ruckman who didn't ruck, arbitrarily nominating a player to ruck, bounce/throw in with only one team's ruckman nominating, stopping a player from taking a bounce. Right now the umpires don't know how to manage the 'nominating ruckman'. So they were the cause as much as Jack. Any signs of aggression from Jack is a step forward. We lost nothing from the episode. I'm glad Oliver saw what was happening and took the initiative! Edited April 6, 2017 by Lucifer's Hero 6 Quote

If Gawn was fighting instead of taking the centre bounce, during a close game when we are getting beaten in the midfield, I would have been just as annoyed. It's got nothing to do with Watts as a player. There is no doubt we let our emotions get the better of us last weekend. We gave away silly frees, we have two key players suspended, and we got distracted from the game at times. It's a good learning curve for a young team, and I hope we've learnt from it. Quote

I hope so, because if it's a tight game against the cats, no doubt an experienced team like them will start pushing the buttons of the Vince's, Viney's and such who wont back down and then the remainder will want to fly the flag. Heads will need to be in the game from start to finish to give us any chance. Quote
Lucifers Hero 40,746 Posted April 7, 2017 Posted April 7, 2017 Am article with much high praise of Oliver http://www.theage.com.au/afl/melbourne-demon-oliver-leads-army-of-stars-20170407-gvgbek.html Some snippets: "He is like Cripps or Sydney's Josh Kennedy, a tall and strong midfielder who with longer arms have better reach to be able to get clear of a tackle and still get a handball out... The difference between Oliver and Cripps or Kennedy is that he is quick..." "He accelerates through the contest," Melbourne player/coach performance manager Brendan McCartney said. "He is electric. He just has great power". "Even for an AFL player Oliver has a fierce competitiveness in everything he does. Which means not just getting the ball and winning, but even making sure he gets the last word in an argument". Final word to Macca: "He was a really inspired pick by our recruiters," 4 Quote
