ANB and Frost have trade currency

Most players do I'd suspect, most players of value aren't traded.

Mid be amazed if ANB is traded, he has become a vital cog. Frosty I don't think he will be but if we can get Lever then he goes to the maybe trade. I wouldn't want to lose either.

ANB is a must keep. Frost not as important, but as you say if we pick up another defender it needs to be considered.

JKH is one I would trade, but his value is hard to put a number on. Scintillating form in the VFL and has had some solid games when he comes in and plays in the middle, but just doesn't get the opportunities.

Yes would definitely rather keep ANB, however if he was to be used to bring in Kelly, that's a whole new ball game. If he were to be traded as part of a Lever deal I think it would leave a hole in the midfield, but Kelly would be a major upgrade, even though I rate ANB.

ANB and Frost are obviously the keys to this off season at this stage. Does anyone know if they're holding out for a better contract or to go elsewhere? ANB homesick? Frost brosick?

Some great lists posted but nobody has mentioned that the spot on our list that we have free as a result of HL's retirement.

It has not been mentioned because we dont have a spot on the primary list, Joel Smith has taken his spot after signing for 2 seasons.

Table updated for Keilty and Alex Neal-Bullen contracts.

The number of games played will be updated at the end of the season...a bit tedious to do each week.  If you want the latest on any player you can find it here

Just a conspiracy theory here

Frost playing VFL and no new contract?

I'm thinking it's match ups. I think that he will be floated in the Lever trade but if we don't get Lever I assume Frost will sign.

Vince I can assume it'll just be a year extension until he feel he's done. Maybe might try to get 2 years considering Lewis.

Kennedy I assume is on the trade block and best case rookie but I think Hullett more chance for a rookie lifeline. King will stay, I assume Flip will get another year.

Id be more worried that AVB doesn't have a contract in front of him yet. White is the other one who would be worried.

I agree with what you've said. Just a random thought.

I personally assume we'd be keen to keep vanders and frosty regardless of other moves. I llke both as players and for depth. But atm we can only assume as there might be other factors at play

Will be interesting to see what happens.

@Unleash Hell it's a  real tough one this time of year. Maybe Jackson Trengove wants to come over and he'd be best 25 so we'd need to find space. We'd be up to our eyeballs with Harley Balic from Freo as well considering we were keen 2 years ago in his draft year. Motlop will be shopping himself around as well. If players think we've got a shot at a flag and they think they can make best 22 their managers will be making a call which might put a spanner in our players plans.

I noticed that the table in yesterday's post has disappeared so here it is again.

As an aside, has the 'Edit' button disappeared for other posters or is it just my browser playing up?

So it's down to Vince, Kennedy, King and Vanders from the main list still out of contract?

4 rounds of national draft picks for 4 senior list spots with the chance of trading some players in or out.

You'd think only Kennedy would have any interest from another club and even that would be unlikely. So I'm guessing it would be a matter of seeing who is out there from other trades or free agent pick ups and whether they offer more than these 4.

Updated for loss of Spencer, Hulett, White and Trengove.  Especially sad to see Jack go :-(

Table now shows our position re list spots and draft picks.  Table has also been updated to show games played as at end of 2017.

Note:  The list spot available from Lumumba's departure is allocated to J. Smiths senior's appointment and a late draft pick (eg #82) will be used.

So we have 3 Seniors List spots and at least 1 Rookie Spot.

Given Maynard's game at the weekend I wouldn't be surprised to see him upgraded to the seniors list, depending on how many trades we do.  As a minimum he would be re-rookied.

Edit:  Ignore the table below - Can't seem to delete it.  It is superseded by the one above.

To date, the four delistings and retirement of Lumumba suggests we'll be trading in two players, while drafting the compulsory three (one may include a rookie upgrade).

Any additional delistings from the main list, King and Vandenberg the only remaining possibilities, would indicate that we'll be targeting additional players in the trade period. I don't think the club will draft four or more players.

Based on current reports, Lever and Balic appear most likely. Here's hoping another is added to the mix.

Vandenberg has just re-signed according the MFC website so that would only leave King and Kennedy left according to LH's list?

Updated for Vanb and Bernie re-signings and the changes from @red and blue forever.  Thanks

Something to note:  From 2018 Rookies can play AFL without waiting to be upgraded for a LTI to happen.  It will give clubs a lot more flexibility if cruelled by short tem injuries as we were this year.

I would guess that the Rookies are safe and possibly King or maybe King becomes a rookie if we need the list spot.  Suspect Kennedy may be gone by the end of the Trade/Draft period.

The squeeze on list spots really makes me think someone is getting traded. For salary cap reasons as much as anything.

Very few players on draftee deals and not a lot of picks coming in either draft.

And I mean more than King or Kennedy getting traded or not picked up.

The timing on Vince and Vanders deals interesting. I think Bernie they probably wanted to give some time to reflect on his levels of interest. Vanders probably more about seeing how long it would take to get his heel right and get the all clear.

King and Kennedy seem to me to be guys you'd wait and see what trade week brings. If there's a mature ruck or midfielder with more potential on the delisted free agents or free to good home trade market then you'd take them instead.

I am struggling with both the K's staying.

Kennedy has not played a senior game since July 2016 in spite of being in the top four players ever week why would he be retained?

King looks to struggle at Casey why keep?

King they took on as a bit of a project, in fact I think he came to us with some injury issues they thought might take a while to get right. Given he seemed to take the main ruck position (off pencil) late in the year at Casey I'd think they might be backing him in to be the clear number 2 ruck (if Maxy went down we'd probably go small again) and hope he really comes on.

Is it known for sure that Kennedy is out of contract? I can't find any evidence of this, and have a feeling he might have come across on a 3 year deal??

Unless contracted I don't think they'll keep Ben Ken but I'd also be willing to wait and see through the trades until it comes down to the final list spot. He had an injury interrupted preseason and Goodwin's game plan requires elite fitness at half forward. They might've all but put a line through him for the year but not through his career if that makes sense.

King isn't far off what you'd expect from a 20 year old ruck. He was looking more athletic as the year went on at Casey. Again, see what is out there in trades or delisted players and then see how his offseason is going before making a call.

The latest picture after Ben Kennedy delisting.  Now there are 4 Senior list spots available.

Only one OOC Senior list player left - King.

Then contracted players need to go to make room for any more players.  Watts is gone and talk about Kent also being traded out.

Posted (edited)

So if Watts leaves, we're looking at five vacancies on the main list.

Presumably if/when we acquire Lever our draft position will be weakened.

Based on this, I believe we will draft two players plus J. Smith to meet the mandatory requirement of drafting three.

Thus, we should have two more positions remaining on the main list (for trade-ins).

One name raised via media reports is Balic (hopefully for a 4th round pick), Who is the other? let's wait and see.

Finally, as indicated above by LH, King remains unsigned. This may be a contingency that depends on the outcome of Watts (if we are targeting three to trade-in). Alternatively, if both Watts and King departs it will appear we're either targeting four for trade-in (unlikely) or going to draft three plus J. Smith.

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
