Any thoughts on Gawn at stoppages with no third man up?

 

Cam Mooney on SEN yesterday predicting MFC to score heavily from stoppages.

Makes sense he'd dominate without it.

It'll be interesting to see how teams try to counter him without the third man up. 

Our rovers have to be on point, but it should allow our mids to be positioned more attacking positions from stoppages.

It may also give Spencer a helping hand. He has issues but his strength has always been his tap work.

It will also be interesting to see how Geelong goes both with this rule and the deliberate ducking-no free-play on rule. With Biclavs and the Selwoods being the rolled gold standard of both it may unfortunately negatively impact their ability to win games.

Don't wish to ignite another 'Spencer' debate but I don't agree with that.

Spencer's strong point is his competitiveness and brute strength. Tap-work is an art and Spencer is most definitely limited in that skill. Amongst other AFL specific skills. 

As for the thread, it was brought up a while ago and yeh, clearly Gawn and the mids will benefit. Stars are aligning.

Agree here and like to add that because of Spencil strength, he will be used in more games than a lot think. Where he will be effective  i think will be in Centre Bounces where the go will be ,straight at them, and hurt them fairly, Max's forte, including his marking, there upon will be most effective at forward chances. Of course this is quite variable, but we are lucky looking at the moment.

Gawn will be scary! The only times he was really beaten was when he was held out of contests and others got involved. I expect us to score heavily in general but especially from quality taps from Gawn.

Selwood will still get his frees.  The line will be something about how can you expect the umpires to spot a small difference in the midst of a pack of players. 

 

My answer to this would of course be "because they are professional umpires being paid to be able to spot things like that" but sadly the AFL has never taken tat approach. 

It's heartening to see someone in the media consistently rate Melbourne.

Not the first time Mooney has pumped up our tyres in recent times.

 

Nice to see that the article  spells the merit of adding Lewis to our mid equation. Good timing (or astute foresight) injecting him into our midfield mix.

This is exactly what other teams used against Max last year.  It's not so much as 3rd man up, but holding down the ruckman so that another (3rd man) can get to the ball. 

So Max will be hugely advantaged by this, but so will Sandilands and other bean-poles.

watching the 99 mfc vs nm game you referenced on the replay thread, the thing that struck me was how relatively clean the competing ruckmen were with respect to not shepherding, locking arms and wrestling. it was refreshing to watch.  this has been a bugbear of mine for years. it was not always like that and the umps used to be strict on the use of arms  for other than the ball. if the afl can clean that aspect up over time we might return to good clean rucking contests. lack of third man up will help with the congestion and limit some of the wrestling

As long as it doesn't happen at the centre bounce when all our players are on the other side of him as against St Kilda and cost us the game.

Gawn without a 3rd man up - good.

Watts, Pedda, Weeds, Spencer etc without a 3rd man up - worrying. 

That said, 3rd man up at centre clearances wasn't allowed, 3rd man ups at boundary throw ins were hard to do anyway. It's really the around the ground ball ups for the 25% of time Gawn isn't in that are the concern.

Look to last year's two St Kilda games for pointers. Hickey did a good job on Gawn.  How & why?

Gawn: 13 disposals and 38 hit outs. Hickey: 13/36.

Hickey is a tall, lean, wiry type ruckman, similar to Gawn but not as big. He doesn't try to overpower Gawn or out leap him he combats him with smarts. In that second game Riewoldt had 4 hit outs, Ross 4 and Acres 3, so they used 3rd man up to control Gawn as well. 

The disposal difference in the 2nd game could be a lot to do with it being the post Darwin game. As well as Gawn going forward for a lot of the 2nd half of that game to give us a different path to goal IIRC. Tom McDonald/Watts took the ruck duties I think?

The centre bounce rule was changed in 2005, White was All Australian in 2004.
