Melbourne midfield ranked worst in AFL by Champion Data

Featured Replies

Possibly the dumbest article I've ever read, or extremely misleading at a minimum.

The AFL’s official-number crunchers have delivered a glowing endorsement of the Magpies’ prime movers using a complex formula to asses each midfielder’s output over the past two years, in comparison to their peers.

Led by superstar ballwinners Scott Pendlebury and Adam Treloar, the Pies have six top-end midfielders who are classified as elite or above average, bolstering claims Collingwood has the centre square setup to break its three-year finals drought next season.

Richmond’s midfield brigade also received a big tick, with the moves to pickup Josh Caddy, from Geelong, and Gold Coast hard nut Dion Prestia in the trade period lifting the Tigers’ 2017 midfield rating up to fourth.

But the controversial analysis is less kind on Melbourne. Despite the big raps on the Demons’ young talent, Champion Data has ranked Melbourne’s midfield-forward outfit last.

According to the rankings which will be released as part of the 2017 Prospectus, Melbourne has six midfielders in the average range, including young star Jack Viney, captain Nathan Jones and ex-Hawthorn recruit Jordan Lewis.

Viney is Melbourne’s top-ranked midfielder at No.52 in Champion Data’s rankings, below Pendlebury (6) Treloar (13), Steele Sidebottom (28), Daniel Wells (38), Taylor Adams (41) and Jack Crisp (51).

Well their complex premiership quadrant model worked so well for them this season...

NOT......

Who cares. We have Viney, Petracca, Oliver and Brayshaw coming through. That is a quality list of young talent. Not to mention the potential of Jayden Hunt - who looks like he could be anything - to roll through that midfield. I would expect we would've had a bottom 3 midfield this year - excluding Gawn. But its not as though we don't have players coming through. We have a great batch coming through.

There's something clearly wrong with whatever formulas they're using to reach their rankings if Richmond and Collingwood's midfields are considered two of the best in the league.

I mean, Jesus... RICHMOND? Their midfield is horrific.

Xmas party started early at Champion Data this year.

Richmond? Wtf? I mean really... wtf?

Perhaps you might have heard the one about statistics and damn lies. Well this is one about using past performance and applying it to the present and the future. It simply doesn't take into account that some of the midfields with older players are bound to decline while the younger midfields have the capacity to overtake them with rapid improvement.

There's nothing wrong with the Champion Data people. Pollsters are getting it wrong all of the time. Look at the recent US elections.

I have always said only one statistic counts the scoreboard at the end of the match and all other statistics are rubbish

Jack Crisp ranked ahead of Jack Viney ffs.

They should be embarrassed releasing this garbage. It's a step away from pulling names out of a hat.

I'm not sure it is a step away P-man

Richmond? Looks like they are top 4 quality again hey? Exciting times for them.

Statistics allow you to bend the truth to put what ever spin you want to put on it.

Collingwood aparently have the best midfield in the comp.........that wasn't good enough to make the eight last year.

Laughable really ,and another nail in the coffin of credibility for Champion data , which has lost its way a tad.

After this year's Census and reading this,I'm beginning to think that statisticians are [censored] in the head.

Jesus, the season can't come quick enough. The fact that I am reduced to reading rubbish articles like this is sad. Collingwood as the best midfield in the League, with Richmond as number 4, WTF?! There is literally no change to the Collingwood midfield since the 2016 season. Either this is complete rubbish or midfield strength no longer has an influence on the outcome of a game.

The head researcher referred to himself as Ted MacWire and had been downing vodka martinis and metho milk for the life of the study I believe.

Clearly, from these data, the draft order determination is seriously flawed.  The AFL should consult Champion Data and use this to determine draft order. Can't understand how Gil doesn't understand this glaring fact. Wait for his decision on the run to reallocate this year's draft to assist those struggling clubs and cut down those so highly overstocked midfields. ?

An article like this should provide some fire in the belly for our guys to prove them all wrong. In a way, this is better result than over inflating their egos by announcing them as the best, and then wondering why they under achieved later on.

much happier to see this happen to Collingwood.

Champion Data have always been a joke

Not to mention revisiting the Priority Picks.

The AFL's official number crunchers are also quoted in this paragraph.... see below

Yeah we are a special breed :P

i wouldn't worry about any article based on the afl player rankings. It's a flawed system and the afl and champion data are really pushing hard for the public to show interest in it

Look on the bright side. We are paying great odds!?

The text messages started flooding in shortly after quarter time. One read: “Is Melbourne even at the ground?” Moments later, as Carlton’s Elijah Hollands kicked the first goal of the second term, the Blues held a commanding 43-point lead. By then, the Demons’ only score was a behind kicked by Brody Mihocek nearly five minutes into the game. Ironically, Mihocek would also register the last minor score of the day after the game took a dramatic turnaround.
