Viney is Melbourne’s top-ranked midfielder at No.52 in Champion Data’s rankings, below Pendlebury (6) Treloar (13), Steele Sidebottom (28), Daniel Wells (38), Taylor Adams (41) and Jack Crisp (51).

Who cares. We have Viney, Petracca, Oliver and Brayshaw coming through. That is a quality list of young talent. Not to mention the potential of Jayden Hunt - who looks like he could be anything - to roll through that midfield. I would expect we would've had a bottom 3 midfield this year - excluding Gawn. But its not as though we don't have players coming through. We have a great batch coming through.

There's something clearly wrong with whatever formulas they're using to reach their rankings if Richmond and Collingwood's midfields are considered two of the best in the league.

I mean, Jesus... RICHMOND? Their midfield is horrific.

Perhaps you might have heard the one about statistics and damn lies. Well this is one about using past performance and applying it to the present and the future. It simply doesn't take into account that some of the midfields with older players are bound to decline while the younger midfields have the capacity to overtake them with rapid improvement.

There's nothing wrong with the Champion Data people. Pollsters are getting it wrong all of the time. Look at the recent US elections.

I have always said only one statistic counts the scoreboard at the end of the match and all other statistics are rubbish

Statistics allow you to bend the truth to put what ever spin you want to put on it.

Collingwood aparently have the best midfield in the comp.........that wasn't good enough to make the eight last year.

Laughable really ,and another nail in the coffin of credibility for Champion data , which has lost its way a tad.

After this year's Census and reading this,I'm beginning to think that statisticians are [censored] in the head.

Jesus, the season can't come quick enough. The fact that I am reduced to reading rubbish articles like this is sad. Collingwood as the best midfield in the League, with Richmond as number 4, WTF?! There is literally no change to the Collingwood midfield since the 2016 season. Either this is complete rubbish or midfield strength no longer has an influence on the outcome of a game.

The head researcher referred to himself as Ted MacWire and had been downing vodka martinis and metho milk for the life of the study I believe.

Can't understand how Gil doesn't understand this glaring fact. Wait for his decision on the run to reallocate this year's draft to assist those struggling clubs and cut down those so highly overstocked midfields. ?

An article like this should provide some fire in the belly for our guys to prove them all wrong. In a way, this is better result than over inflating their egos by announcing them as the best, and then wondering why they under achieved later on.

i wouldn't worry about any article based on the afl player rankings. It's a flawed system and the afl and champion data are really pushing hard for the public to show interest in it
