Seems Mr Oliver had a little run in with the boys in blue drink driving. I'm pretty disappointed that the article implies he had passengers, escalating the amount of people he put at risk. Not panicking just yet but seems he needs a clip around the ears or two to get the larrikin out of him

From a club perspective, I'm happy that this was announced on our website by us. We weren't responding to other media reports. 

From an Oliver perspective, I love him as a player but he also has the potential to be one of the least disciplined payers at our club. Hopefully we can use this major incident to help straighten him out a bit early. 

 

Finally, I'm not saying I excise this behavior at all - I don't and won't - but the language used in our statement indicates the club sees it on the minor end of drink driving violations.  Remembering that as a 19 year old he must be .00, it could be that he has had a low end failure while not intoxicated (ie the next day or in the evening after 1 beer) as opposed to blowing .95 at 3am driving home from a club. Still a gross error of judgement and poor behavior by perhaps not as bad as possible. 

NB: I have no source or info just interpreting the club statement.

Silly boy. I like everything about Clarry but I hope the message gets through on this one even if it means a harsh penalty.

Whilst in the scheme of things he hasn't really done anything whilst representing the club so I understand the argument that says it shouldn't involve any club penalty I think young guys need to learn how fortunate they are to be Melbourne footballers. Any punishment should be for their sake and not for ours.

Pretty convenient time to announce it.

He'd obviously be a P-Plater so any reading over his in trouble. Not saying it is the case but he could have had a big night & still blown over the next morning which is easy to do..

I'm hoping the club leaders set a really good standard with this.  No need to smash him for it, but hopefully they make it very clear that this sort of behaviour at our club just won't be tolerated.  If that means missing a few games at the start of the year then so be it.

Agreed.  We have a much better culture than when Maloney and Sylvia were getting up to mischief.  Today's leadership group will do what needs to be done, considering all the circumstances (which we don't really know).  If they decide on charity work so be it or missing a few games so be it. 

I have every bit of faith in Oliver (unlike some other certain players) to cop his whack on the chin and learn from his mistake.

What did hodge cop from hawthorn? Whatever it was, I hope our punishment has a bit more sting to it

biggest deterrent should be the embarrassment of getting his name splashed all over the media

Well he could be asked to speak to a few young footy teams at clinics, about the dangers of drink driving.

He could be fined.

He could be asked to do some work around the club, selling memberships, at the shop, cleaning the coaches cars etc.

He could train in a "I'm a Bloody Idiot" T Shirt for a month.

Etc.

It doesn't have to be missing games. Maybe it will be, but it doesn't have to be.

 

Incidentally, the reading could be low, like .01, one beer, no real impediment to driving, but still illegal for a P Plater.

Or he could just miss a game or 2. It's all the players care about, and it leaves no uncertain message. 

Doesn't matter how he did it, he's brought a negative light onto the club and himself, in my opinion it warrants a decent punishment. 

I heard he was actually parked and just waiting for a mate.
