Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

How long did Sydney leave Mitchell in the NEAFL?

Hardly a fair comparison.  Mitchell had already done plenty of good things at AFL level, and the discussion was around the fact that he couldn't crack the side, even though when he had played he was very good.

Steele has done nothing like that at all.

I can't remember the exact post but basically the idea was put forward for exchanging our 1st pick 2017 for a bunch of second round picks this year. Clubs like GC who are leaking players and will likely not use many of their later (even possibly their later second round picks) would be likely interested to offload them for the chance at gaining a higher pick next year.

Just thinking if this years draft is as 'even' as recruiters are saying, might be worth packaging any recycled players (Dunn/garland/Michie/Newton) etc with our 2017 1st pick to get 2 or 3 reasonably high draft picks this year.

Thoughts?

im not desperate to get into the high draft this year but if it's that even, there maybe some real value even with picks in the 20's

If last years transaction with Essendon is anything to go by then we won't be playing hardball. I'm just glad we don't have a first round pick to give them for Hibberd.

I admit I was pretty annoyed when I saw we gave way to essendons demands so quickly with that (melksham) trade, but it also allowed us to move on and get the subsequent trades done that definitely improved our clubs position.

Would love a big name to nominate Melbourne...seems like it's always another club!

Interesting conundrum, bargain our way into a better draft position in this year's 'even' draft, or alternatively seek to trade for draft picks in next year's reportedly higher quality talent pool.

I'm simply saying it would be nice if Meldbourne had a big name requesting a trade in.

it only took us all year to get Hogan's signature. I hope you can 'think about it' and see the difference

is there though.  Players line up clubs from a long way out these days.. All we see is the 'decision".

The only element of any of this I truly believe, it the what. The when, the who,the why  etc is all a game.

Will be interesting to see if a smokie slides acrosss.

The reason a 'big name' has not nominated Melbourne, is for the last 3 years we have not encouraged that, we have built the club from scratch again with 22 players who are there to play a role on any given game day, listen to one of the reasons Hogan re signed "the team is not reliant on one player"

That is not why a big name hasn't come to us.

Oh, the old 'woe is us' answer, the reason for the last 3 years is because Roos wanted to clear out and build from the bottom up, it also depends on your definition of a big name, would agree that maybe the 7 before that we were not a 'destination' club, prefer these days that we build our own big name players

Yeah I agree totally there is a lot of games and BS for sure.

Player retention vs trading in...getting a big player (or future players) to nominate MFC (danger/buddy/Frawley/?mitchell) I see actually as very different (and much harder).

It should be much easier to get players staying and wanting to sign on (which has obviously been difficult in recent years at MFC) - retention is a no brainer for the elite clubs...

but getting a player nominating a trade to your club is obviously far harder (and besides second rate players MFC has a poor track record). Tyson the exception for mine-

Hogan signing (as well as all the others this year) is huge as it seems to put an end to the recent trend of losing our talent. With player retention addressed- I'm now keen to see who we can get in (who's genuine A grade) to top up our forming list - and not have to give up picks in the process ... free agency - lets get amongst

I think this is untrue actually. We tried taking recycled players from other clubs (just not A grade)... yes to fill roles but because we couldnt get anyone else. Do you think we would've said no to Dangerfield or Buddy if they nominated this club?

There are probably a few reasons for that, one is the fact we've had the worst recruiters in the competition who have chosen some of the worst draft picks imaginable, and we have had no development program to develop any that have slipped thorough the cracks and were ok.

With the top picks we have had we should have been able to set the club up for a decade but we blew it.

Then we've had a poor of field team who were responsible for Neeld and some of the most outrageously stupid decisions ever made by a football club, Richmond excluded, who have almost decimated the club.

Why would any top player choose us, when we see how Goody turns out it may be different, but we have to get runs on the board first, top players can get almost as much playing for a great club as they do playing with us, so it's a no brainer. We have the ingredients and now it's up to us to see if we can bake the cake, if we can then we will get top liners wanting to play for us.

It has to be sustained though, this is the big task for the Bullies now.

I'm interested in getting picks around 15+  through the 2nd Rnd &into 3rd Rnd, but not to give away our 2017 1st Rnd Pick to do that.

I think most people would agree that Geelong and the Hawks have had an incredible benefit under free agency.

The number of players they've gained far outweighs the loss of 1 player.

Mitchell hasn't gone yet :)

plus I think players like ablet and buddy probably left to get out of the media fishbowl-(plus buddy's partner in Sydney) so you can understand that.

Hey I'd love to get earlier picks but you have to either give up players (with actual currency), future picks or d o some creative accounting with an academy club (who want and need the points)...

so what do you suggest?

Dear me, "woe is me I am a Melbourne supporter and nobody loves us", we do really need to get a grip, this is called the trade whispers thread, at the moment Josh Mahoney has said we have stocked up with midfielders and apart from Hibberd we will probably be pretty quiet in the trade period although we, like other clubs, are trying to find a fwd/ruck

The whole 'woe is me' drone gets so tiresome, and a lot of what is said around attracting talent is simply guess work and opinion. Which is fine accept that people seem to constantly post it as though it is fact. My opinion is that 4 factors play into attracting players of any calibre:

  1. Money (and contract duration)
  2. Opportunity to play and play a role they want
  3. Likelihood to experience success
  4. Workplace culture (are there people and coaches they admire and are people happy there)

All of the above have to be measured against what that person is experiencing where they are.

We had a hard time with culture and the likelihood of experiencing success for a while there but the culture has clearly been fixed and we seem set to prove out the likelihood of experiencing success. Of course, for the latter, seeing will be believing. Once that has happened we will eventually attract the free agents and players we need or want to ice the cake. Until then we are doing an extremely good job, finally, of developing it in-house. I personally think that bringing in Macca has been one of the best moves of the club. Roos has dealt with the culture and loving coming into work thing and Goodwin is working on strategy and winning in the modern game. Macca has done an awesome job of developing the kids that Josh, Todd and Jason have brought in.

I don't think there is any upside in moaning about who is nominating (or not nominating) us, when we play finals next season the final piece will be there and hopefully free agency can finally start working for us and not against us.

Would much rather him than Hibberd.

Don't you love it how they say they want to attend BnF's before making any decisions on their future, everyone knew he would req a trade to StK months ago. Would be nice if a decent player not at the end of their career nominated us.

Hibberd is a gun. He'll be a top pick up for us.

UNDER THE PUMP by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
